No one takes creating nonsense as serious as Weird Al and pretty much every artist he has parodied considers it an absolute honor.

Some even suggest one of their songs, like the time Madonna asked him when he was going to do "Like a Surgeon". He hadn't thought about it but that put the idea in his brain and he wrote it. IIRC she even appeared in the video.

Al tends to parody the videos, too. The best example is his parody to Michael Jackson's "Beat It!" which he entitles, "Eat It!" There is a video out there that shows side-by-side comparison of the two videos where you see what is done in the original video being expertly parodied in Weird Al's video. In this case, you may want to watch Coolio's video and see how many of the scenes in the video are parodied along with the words, themselves. Yes, Weird Al has original songs, but is best known for some brilliant parodies. About 2/3 of each of his albums are parodies with the other 1/3 original songs. Some bands have said that they know that they have made it when Weird Al parodies one of their songs.

In the movie genre, you should check out the cult classic "Top Secret" with Val Kilmer. There is a scene that was shot in reverse where the lines were spoken normally but last to first so when the scene is played normally for the audience, it looks "normal" but their speech is backward. The gag being that backward speech 'sounds Swedish' and the scene takes place in a "Swedish Book Shoppe". It makes Weird Al's backward scene look novice. At least check out that scene if not the movie itself.

His parodies are great BUT, on his albums he usually includes a polka song, where he puts modern metal, hip hop and other genres lyrics to upbeat polka music, a twist on the parody (keeping the lyrics but changing the music). If you have never heard Black Hole Sun as a polka, your in for a treat 🤣

If you're familiar with Blurred Lines, you need to listen to Word Crimes. So smart. So funny. He and his band have been together since the 80s and they can play almost any genre. They sound so very close to the originals you could mistake them until the lyrics begin. The issue with parodies, however, is if you don't know the original you might not appreciate the send up as much.

I have adored Weird Al his entire career. My son became a fan of Weird Al when he was a pre-teen in the late 1990's, so for his birthday, I took him to a Weird Al concert at a theme park. Although the attendance was very small, Al did a concert like he was playing for thousands, not a few dozen. He did all the costume changes and it was very hot and humid that day. You won't find a nicer person in the entertainment industry. "Trapped in the Drive Thru", "Word Crimes", "Hardware Store", "You Don't Love Me Anymore"...just a few that are hilariously funny, but didn't receive the attention that "Fat" and "Eat It" have gotten.

Great reaction Salvo! Weird Al is the undisputed KING of parody - BUT he always pays complete respect to the source material - it's the same song, just with whacky lyrics AND only does a parody when permission is given (hence why he's never done a Prince parody - The Purple One never gave his blessing!) Kurt Cobain of Nirvana is claimed to have said that they truly made it big when Weird Al parodied their song! Michael Jackson loved Al's versions of several songs! I'm glad Coolio finally 'cooled' off about this! Those royalty cheques must hel. He does his own songs too (and they're great)! He's an insanely talented songwriter, and the musicians he has (and he's used the same for over 40 years!) are top quality as well! MUST do: White & Nerdy, Like A Surgeon, Yoda, Eat It, Fat, Smells Like Nirvana, The White Stuff, and especially The Saga Begins (if you're a Star Wars fan!). Al is brilliant. Cheers.

I don't know f you remember or not we were talking about Al during one of your tournament live streams. I still say doing a normal song then the Weird Al Cover would make a killer vid/stream LOL Al is a total perfectionist. he releases nothing till it's perfect. He not only does the songs to a tee but the videos as well. Micheal Jackson and Nirvana have given him use of the sets they used for their videos and Al parodied them perfectly. And YES he does originals as well. He also does popular song's lyrics to polka music which is also very funny, he has one on just about every album he puts out. Dr. Demento was a show I barely got to listened to because of my age, but I did listen to it a few times. Dr. Demento had a show on the radio that had comedic songs. There is a lot of them. That is kind of where Weird Al started. Or when his name started to get out there, "Another One Rides the Bus" shows how he started, with minimal instruments and production value. Him and an accordion and a guy with a briefcase and props. People name all these songs to do, like this one, and White and Nerdy, and Fat and Eat It. And, though I remember them being popular. The song that everyone like and loved, nobody reacts to. And, if you were really a beginning fan of Weird Al, you would know that the song is called "Yoda" a parody of "Lola" by the Kinks. Do both of those songs Salvo.

Best known are his parodies, but about a third of his songs are originals (like "Hardware Store"). Another third is style parodies, where the song is an original, but performed in the (clearly recognizable) style of another artist / group. E.g. Saw him Live back in the 70's in SoCal at Knotts Berry Farm on Halloween when they did "Knotts Scary Farm" in October. You really need to know the original song to appreciate the parodies. Might be a great Idea to both for TWO-FER Tuesday Videos. 😊

They're about 50/50 parodies and originals. Many of the originals are tributes to bands/artists done in their style, but they're original compositions.

Him (and his band) are super skilled, as they have done this sort of comedic cover of almost every genre of music.

Just now going thru the rabbit hole of "Weird Al", what a depraved child/man you were/are. Such detail in his video productions as well as well as stellar guest appearances like Florence Henderson (Mrs. Brady) in this one. Enjoy my friend, been listening to him since the 80's, even seen him in concert in the 2000's.

Weird Al has been the gold standard of amazing parody music for decades. You WILL find a song you love that he has made even better. Lots of suggestions already here. If you're a fan of the stage musical Hamilton, the video of Lin Manuel Miranda listening to Weird Al's polka medley of the whole show and laughing his ass off is priceless

The issue was that Al got with Coolio's management team, instead of Coolio himself to okay the parody. Because of this, Al makes sure to get the okay from the artists he parodies, that way theres no issues. He also records original songs, sometimes in styles of the artists.

Most of his songs are parodies. He does some mashups, accordion style. He does have a few original songs: The Night Santa Went Crazy, Dare To Be Stupid, Melanie, You Don't Love Me Anymore, Germs, Wanna B Ur Lovr, and my favourite, One More Minute

Welcome to novelty song genre. Most of these songs start with airing on the radio show "Dr. Demento" or as records that did not fit any category at a record store. First song that Weird Al recorded and shared was "My Balona" ("My Sharona").

I remember when this song came out. From my understanding the studio gave Weird Al the green light for this parady and Coolielo didn't know anything about it. Weird Al would always ask for permission to make the parady before publishing it. For an artist, weird Al asking to do a parady was a sign that the artist had officially "made it" in their career.

He is so incredibly clever in his satire. Check out the video for Eat It (MJ's Beat It). It is so on point. One of my faves is E Bay, a spoof of My Way. If you want to go back in time, check out Allan Sherman, who was the early 60's version of Weird Al.

Filming the last section of the video backwards is such a Weird Al thing to do. The fact that he had to learn to mouth the words backwards so it would look correct when they played it backwards is pretty remarkable.

The entire ending scene he learned how to sing the chorus backwards so it would look correct when played backwards. That's dedication to one's craft no matter how you look at it. And I've been an Al fan since his Dr. Dimento days.

So near as I can tell, weird al does 3 types of songs. 1- parodies, 2- style parodies, which are original songs that parody a musical style. And 3- polka songs, which use the lyrics of several songs and jams together with his own polka style music.

I remember when Dr. Demento discovered him…years ago. Weird Al is really a genius, with incredible talent, and his team is amazing! So much hard work goes into each video. Take a look at his Michael Jackson’s parodies…”Fat” (“Bad”) & “Eat It” (“Beat It”) & many other artists. He does any genre…pretty much.

Weird Al has some original works like "Albuquerque" and "Hardware Store." He also does polka medleys of popular songs, original songs inspired by the style of other musicians, and his songs are often more successful than the originals that they spoof.

When he bounces up and walk towards the camera, he’s actually walking backwards. All the extras look like they’re moving backwards in the shot but in reality he’s the only one moving backwards. He’s singing the lyrics backwards also.
