True story, I was 18 years old and Wilson Pickett was on the top of the charts. He was appearing at a nightclub in my area. I was not 21. I had two older sisters, who knew the owner of this nightclub. He let me in to see his show then I had to leave! OMG…Oh I was going to see him live and in person and it was the first concert of my life and it was one of the greatest. He sang all the songs I wanted to hear and I was forever grateful to my sisters and the owner, those memories are so vivid and I’m in my 70s!

This was the soundtrack to my mid-teens, in Scotland, Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, Booker T and the MGs, Sam and Dave and Aretha Franklin. We all loved the sound of Stax records where I'm from and our local bands played all of their hits in church hall dances. Who knows why soul music by black Americans appealed to us so much? But it did! It taught me early in my life that good music has no geographical, cultural, or racial boundaries. It's a real thrill to see another generation getting into the sounds of my youth. Thank you.

When the soul, the blues, and the funk of "the people" were flowing freely like water from the heavens. Oh my Lord yeah!! Oh yeah! Can I get a witness right here? Can I signify right here now?? Those were the days of deep, DEEP soul! Halleluiah. Halleluiah.

Groovy! Wilson Picket is the bomb as they used to say. Pure soul is right! To hear more of his greatness check out "Mustang Sally", "Ninety Nine And A Half Wont Do", "If You Need Me", "Funky Broadway", "Everybody Needs Somebody To Love", and "Land of 1000 Dances" among many others. Jimi Hendrix played in Pickett's band early in his career. A fun way to get a quick history of sixties soul music is to check out Arthur Conley "Sweet Soul Music" from 1967. It's packed full of shout outs to the greats of that era.
