Very Few Bands, Exceed My Expectations, YES is at the top of that list. In 1975 I said the same thing to my older brother, "But they can't play this music Live", so he handed me YESSONGS. In 1977 I got to see them Live, and they exceeded my expectations.

The lead singer for Yes told the other four guys that he wanted the band to sound like an orchestra, and then showed up with just a tambourine. If you saw keyboardist Rick Wakeman’s massive rig, you would understand who picked up the slack. To be honest, Jon would occasionally play acoustic guitar or keyboards in a live Yes performance. The lead guitarist would often switch between acoustic, electric and lap steel guitars within songs. The bassist might play a triple neck bass guitar and bass pedals (and sing backup) within songs. And, the drummer had access to a number of percussion instruments around his kit. Even in the pre-MIDI 1970’s, they had a big live sound.

This is what you get when you bring five master musicians together, each member is a virtuoso. Rick Wakeman is still regarded as the greatest keyboardist in the history of rock. Chris Squire, RIP..The most aggressive bass player, a real shredder..Steve Howe, ridiculously versatile, on fire guitarist. Bill Bruford, the precision fusion rock drummer that inspired Neil Peart from Rush. The voice of Jon Anderson, and stacked up vocal harmonies to top it all off. Some said they were "too good",and that they often "over-played", that it was "too much"...etc. But the test of time has spoken.

They sound just as good live. They've been around since 1968 and have had many personnel changes but there are 5 members basically. Except when they went on their Union tour in 1991and had 8 members (past & present) on stage at once. Only time I ever saw them live was on that tour.

By Yes standards, you’ll be glad to know that Roundabout barely scratches the surface when it comes to “mind blowing”. If you dare to really have your mind blown, the following are Yes’ greatest epic masterpieces. They will take you to heaven and back, I promise. For the listen best possible experience, listen to the in the order listed. CLOSE TO THE EDGE (1972) Yes’ first side-long epic masterpiece. The song that cemented their status as a legendary band that composed MAGIC, not music. REVEALING SCIENCE OF GOD (1973) Not as complex as the previous, but epic and beautiful nevertheless. GATES OF DELIRIUM (1975) Tolstoy’s book War and Peace, condensed into an epic movie experience of a song. AWAKEN (1977) m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/pKataGmepaida6s Yes final masterpiece. Majestic and transcending. After Awaken was recorded, yes stopped producing magic, and merely produced music. I provide a link for AWAKEN because the studio version is not as well recorded as the linked version, and that may hinder your enjoyment. This version gives the song the production values it deserves.

@@edf13 I didn’t claim that the 4 songs I listed were a complete catalogue of their ‘epics’. I left out more songs than the two you mentioned, eg sides 2, 3, and 4 of Topographic, as well as Fly From Here. And while some of those are quite good, I don’t consider any of them magical. That’s why I didn’t list them.
@sobr4986
@sobr4986 3 жыл бұрын
Lol. Yes, this, exactly. Literally came into comments to say he needs check out one of the actual epics, which would have been *Revealing Since Of God* (20:26) *Gates Of Delirium* (22:16) and *Close To The Edge* (18:41) in my list lol OR, if he wants a true experience, just do the whole Tales from Topographic Oceans album (i mean, only four songs ...sure, its a double LP, 80+ minute run; but still technically only four songs 😆 and man do I love that freakin album. Its an experiencemore more than a listen, but if a person likes a journey, they won't find another like it anywhere)
@rapidprimus

No offence but just because it's longer doesn't mean better. Roundabout it's perfect from beginning to end. I can't say the same for the rest and yes I have listened to them plenty of times.
@sobr4986
@sobr4986 3 жыл бұрын
@@rapidprimus Saying one thing barely scratches the surface of complexity, depth and textures the band accomplishes in its true epics is not knocking the one. But to say the one is the only perfection is wrong. I mean, there is not really a single mistake in either Close To The Edge or Revealing Science Of God either, and honestly hardly a missed take in the entire Topographic runtime. A person's preference may not lay in the experience of a true, epic sonic journey, or even those specific journeys presented, but that takes nothing away from them Clearly Roundabout is also the most timelessly commercial friendly in the catalog (well, obviously save for Owner Of A Lonely Heart, and maybe Your Move/Seen All Good People,) and is clearly the most accessible of the more complex songs with any commercial draw; but that too takes nothing away from others. It all just depends what you're looking for, and Soul was reading that HazeBruv might be interested in an even more expansive experience. I agree, based off his reaction to Roundabout

I missed that tour. I had tickets to their KC show at Kemper Arena, but then the roof caved in several nights before the show... :-( I was able to see Yes several times over the years, including their "Fly From Here" tour, where I finally bit the bullet and paid a ridiculous amount of money for the Meet & Greet and front-row-center seat. Meeting Chris, Steve, and Alan were worth every cent. Oliver Wakeman (Rick's son) was playing keyboards on that tour, and Benoit David was on vocals. It was an awesome night. I've since seen Yes and ARW one time each since that concert.

Great to see you getting to Yes! They are probably the best of the prog (progressive rock) bands of the 1960's-1980's (though they have continued to play more much recently than that). I think you may also enjoy another of their classic songs, I've Seen All Good People. I'd also check out a song of theirs from the mid-80's, Owner Of A Loney Heart. Much more commercial sounding, but still great. If you want to do a really interesting comparison, try listening to America by Simon and Garfunkel, then listen to the Yes reimagining/reworking of this into an almost completely different song-though you can still hear the original at its core.

Please try out Angel of Salvation (Live). If this lenght is ok for you I hope 14 minutes of pure action won't be a problem as well.
