It was coined as a joke by the girl who answered the phones at an indie label (I wanna say sub pop but I might be wrong) when a Rolling Stone journalist called them for an interview. It was so insane how quick they blew up with Nirvana and the Meat Puppets, etc. that it was all just funny to them. Anyway, that journalist used the term in his article and it became a vague word for a collection of music that has very little in common besides its time period. Rage Against the Machine was categorized as grunge at times - just as a reference point.

They have a peak cut off though so be careful about what you listen to post break up. They experiment with their sound a bunch though. They have one of the best rock drummers too. Jimmy Chamberlin is a drummer god.

While those of us without such vocal abilities think this is a gift, history within the music industry shows otherwise. Depression, a very common theme. Often leading to dependencies, self medicating, and ultimately their demise. While not all of them were that young, there's a reason for The Twenty Seven Club. A genuine tragedy that just highlights how depression is a real mental illness that needs to be taken seriously. I am so happy you hear the lyrics and not just the music. I'm born and raised in Seattle, was in HS in the 90s. Nirvana and all the other big bands from the era were an important part of that decade for me. I was a freshman when Smells Like Teen Spirit first broke big. I will always remember turning on the TV while getting ready for school and the video popped up. I just stood and watched until my mom shrieked at me to turn it off or miss the bus. That was pretty much how my teen days were from then on. Mom shrieking at me and me missing the bus.🤷

You know, one of the things that makes you fun to watch is your introspection. Other reaction videos, they listen, they make some eyes at the music, then when it’s over, they say like and subscribe and they’re done. You break down details about what you like, don’t like, compare it to other things you watched, other things you’re in to. And along with you hilarious personality, you add more than just the song. Keep it going. There’s a reason Kurt is a legend. The more you go down the rabbit hole, the more you’ll find, both good and bad. You found the potion that said drink me, and you drank it. These videos have been such a great dissection of these songs, and a crazy nostalgic trip into the music I loved as a teenager. (Hi, it's me, another socially-conscious middle-aged white man checking in to say these bands transformed my whole worldview at a young age and it never really went away.) If you do another song from the album "Dumb" and "Very Ape" are great and not as well-known as some of the others. The album as a whole is a solid 10/10 though, so you can't go wrong. R*pe Me is a difficult song for sure, but the intention behind it is good.

He has said in an interview "heart shaped box" had two meanings - a literal heart-shaped box and, well, a vagina. But particularly a box that has him trapped in a relationship - meat-eating orchid etc. all nasty metaphors for getting pulled in by sex to a relationship. A lot of the imagery is various thoughts and fears about his marriage and having kids.

man I love Dave's drumming here, especially heading into the chorus. I don't usually notice Dave in Nirvana songs! honestly it kinda surprised me when I first heard "wait, the *drummer* is who got big out of Nirvana after Kurt?" (Dave Grohl went on to start the Foo Fighters, if you didn't know, he's basically modern rock royalty) Wow I'm impressed Nirvana made such an immediate impact on you! Ranking them right up with Rage was not something I was expecting. As someone who's just always heard Nirvana about, my older siblings loved this music, yeah I appreciate them a lot but I've never thought about what it must be like to approach them fresh.

Kurt Cobain was an lyrical artist who really captured the problems of fitting in of the late 80s and early 90s. He was a genius in his music, but like many great artists the pain of his art ate up his life. His exploration of his sorrows ended up turning into depression and addiction and that spiraled.

Kurt wrote the kind of songs you'll have to study for a second before you really hear it all. It's visceral and memorable but it's also packed with word play that you probably won't catch all of it right away. In this song, an example is something like "I've been drawn into your magnet tar pit trap" which is a cool line that sounds mysterious and angsty. But now consider that since I heard "magnet tar pit trap" as "Magnetar pit trap" the first time, I cannot unhear it. A magnetar is an impossibly heavy neutron star, which would have an immense an nearly inescapable gravity to it which would trap you if you got too close. You hear that, and you realize you're listening to it as a new song for the second time. A line that is weird and twisty like that, when you realize where it really gets its meaning, it feels like you unlocked a box and inside was a shard of this man's treasured mind. Put that shit in your playlist and experience it for awhile outside the context of content, and I promise you'll be rewarded.

Here’s my recommendations: Go back to Rage Against The Machine- “Bulls on Parade” Linkin Park - “Given Up” (this song has such a different meaning with Chester passing away) Disturbed - listen to “Striken” first to understand their original work and then their cover of “Sound of silence”. That cover is amazing musicianship Slipknot - “Spit it Out”, “Duality”, or “Before I Forget” Avenged Sevenfold Fold - “Critical Acclaim” Audio Slave - “Show me how to Live” (same guitarist from RATM) Lastly check out Alice In Chains - “Man in The Box”

Nirvana is probably my favorite band of all time, Kurt is one of the greatest musicians of all time to me, he was the primary force that changed hair metal into deep introspective music; goth, grunge, alt rock, nu metal, etc.. all that stuff wouldn't be anywhere near the same if he hadn't come along. His artistic talent is breath taking.

Dude, Nirvana is by far my favorite band of all time. Violet Orlandi and AiMori cover "RA*E ME" by Nirvana and several other covers together and they are fierce. Violet is from Brazil and AiMori is from Russia. As much as I love Nirvana, I like their cover of "RA*E ME" a slightly better than the original. You should check them out, they are both freaks in the very best way!!!

In Utero was one of the first albums I ever bought. Nirvana's impact on the music scene back then was incredible, I was only like 12 years old but it almost felt like a switch got flipped and great music started coming out of the woodwork.

Nirvana are a true OG band. They only released 3 studio albums, but those 3 albums basically changed the course of rock. There were many other bands that definitely helped carry the tide, but Nirvana made the whole world take notice. Nirvana set a cultural trend in motion that is still going to this day. They were a “once in a generation” type band.

I love Nirvana, from the first album til the last. Other songs of theirs to check out are: Breed Lithium School Negative Creep Serve the Servants All Apologies If you want to react to a whole album, watch their MTV Unplugged special, it's amazing. The drummer in Nirvana became the lead singer and guitar player in Foo Fighters after Kurt passed away. Foo Fighters have some great songs as well, you will probably like All My Life and The Pretender.
