I removed the transmission in this bus after 57 years!!! This 1962 Volkswagen Type 2 Van/Bus has been sitting for over 40 years. Let's see if we can bring it back to life!

Around 20.05, when you were taking off the starter cable, I could see asbestos dust fly each time you hit the heater duct. BE CARIFUL WORKING ON OLD STUFF! Thanks for the videos
@davidk62715 жыл бұрын
Carl Burgess - i was worried about that too, but wasnt sure whether it was asbestos or not, but anything that looks flaky white on that age of vehicle needs to be avoided. I see a lot of you g men dont wear masks or lift stuff without thinking. I wish i had worn masks and not lifted quite so much stuff when I was a youngster.
@calliope15 жыл бұрын
It’s not asbestos. Its a fiberglass like nomex.

And I also appreciate this video without full edit with all the struggles! Just like many people watching your channel you learn and get better by doing it! It pays to be a bit meticulous with what you are doing. Don’t be afraid to “take a step back” if it is fighting you. On my Singlecab the other week I tried to make things easy by installing a “D” bolt on the Starter. Didn’t chase the threads before installing and it was galled up halfway. We barely got it out again. Had to call in backup and it was a bear! Thought we would need a Dremel and cut off wheel to remove that bolt. Needless to say I chased the original hex bolt and nut and threw a few wraps of electrical tape on it to make it hold in the trans for a one person engine installation. About five minutes of my time would have saved a few hours of fiddling with the thing.

This was a pain to watch in a way. I was shouting at the screen you will snap them bolts as you were tightening instead of loosening. Then when you were trying to remove the gearbox, I was telling you the hand brake cable needs to be undone, but you wasnt listening. Must have had rust in your ears. lol. I admire you doing this all on your own. You remind me of me when I was younger. I used to remove engines and gearboxes and replace them all on my own and wouldnt ask for help. I trusted my own work on cars and nobody elses. Great video, but a pain to watch you struggle at times. :). Keep up the good work. It will all be worth it in the end.

Hey CT. I was wondering what you are doing with the nuts, bolts and other parts? I used freezer bags that have the spot you can write on with a sharpie to put things in when I was working on a similar project. On projects like this, it's not unusual for a year or more to go by before you are ready to reassemble. So the better you are at carefully bagging things, the easier your job is when it comes time to reassemble. One other thing... don't feel the need to speed up the video too much. Only when you are doing something repetitive. We won't get bored.

Just thinking on my own: I wish I could be there to help you with this hauling. In whole Brazil, the country where I've been living this vehicle is named Kombi (sounds like Kom Bee). I learned to love this VW Bus when I was in 2yo in 1976, my gramma had one of this with seats and windows for our family usage. It was a bicolor VW Bus, the top was white and its body was red. I get a little afraid of seeing you fixing all of this by yourself, take care TC. Safety over all, and keep on doing a nice job.

it's really easy to strip out the threads in the Reduction boxes when you go to put them back in, i know it's a long ways away but becareful. when you line up the spring plates the put tension on the bolts and can miss-align and strip the RGBs. Also use anti-Seize on every bolt you put back on! :)

When you do put that back...simple thing but replace that clutch nut with a butterfly wing nut version! Much easier to adjust and no special tools needed! (I’m sure you prob already knew that, but thought I’d mention)

marcijunebug I threw a butterfly wingnut on mine but didn’t change the clutch arm. Do you find that the clutch adjustment holds on the early arms using a wingnut?

Also a stahlwille uno 1024 does not really work with the early arm. You need a clutch pedal helper :)

May need to keep an eye out for a stahlwille 1415 if the wingnut setup doesn’t pan out ;)
