RESPECT!! Thats the only word I can think of!! Laying on the grond,practacly in the snow.. And this is a hobby.. ‘Je bent een bikkel’ is what we are saying in Dutch.. I hope you will allow me to give you some tips: If you have bolds or nuts who are that stubborn as you find on you springplates ( they always are: I know from my own experience!) use heavy duty sockets. The ones who are made for using with pneumatic tools They will last and not slip that easy. Esspecially when you have to use a long pipe to loosen it. Also dont forget: the VW is a european car: made with metric nuts and bolds.. So do not use American Imperial sockets. I saw you used a pipe on your rattle wrench..Thats the way to kill it.. Yours is a good one! It survived!! Better is to use a simple wrench; one without the rattle mechanism these are stronger and less expensive when they break.. You suggested to weld a bar on the bolds on the spring plate to undo those bolds. Thats a good idea. But I should weld on big nuts instead of a bar. Then you still can use a wrench to undo them. A bar will turn perhaps a half a turn and then hit someting. A other nut of a part of the van. Tip: use a big nut and weld it in the centre compleatly on the head of the bold. So filling the treadhole of the nut with iron. While you are weldong you also put in a lot of heat in the bold. This will help as you already knows.. Do not grind of the heads from the bolds!!!Getting them out can be a nightmare. The used bolds are made of very hard steel. So drilling them out will cost you a lot of drills. I am sure you manage.. keep up the good work!! Greetings from a ‘VW nut’ from the other side of the world. (The Netherlands)

The struggle is real here in the rust belt..... Some times the good ol cutting torch is an unfortunate necessity... LOVE the Pickle saga looking forward to the next adventure of the rusty bolt removal... the three season weather conditions (heat, rain, snowand ice) were a nice touch... add in working in flood conditions makes it epic....laughin

However, being that I have busted myself up doesn’t mean I don’t keep going! I have just started to work smarter, not harder. I doubt those special sockets will do any good. I'd weld on a large nut. Be sure to clean off the rust from the head of the bolt and get a nut which is not zinc plated. Often the heat from the welding breaks the bolts loose. Since the heat is concentrated on the bolt, this is more effective than heating up with a propane torch. Good luck!

Try what I did mate. Air ratchet with lower pressure after you have heated the bolt cherry then quench the bolt with oil (cooling and drawing in the oil at the same time) Then use the air ratchet. But it will probably ruin the socket but it's better than drilling those big bolts. Best of luck mate

Just an idea for you when dealing with old rusted fasteners, heat, molasses, then reheat, candle wax. The molasses will break down the rust, so heating the metal around the bolt and the bolts and drip on the molasses several times, then the night before removing the bolts, add the wax in the same fashion. I know this makes for a slow going and tedious routine, but it works! Heat will draw the molasses into the threads, and break down the bond of rust, wax will lubricate the threads to assist in removing the bolts.

I agree with the idea of welding a larger nut to the head of the bolt. In this instance access is your friend. I would use a six point socket and a breaker bar not a ratchet. You could try using a bottle jack on the breaker bar so the weight of the bus is being transferred through the bolt, no need to go too high just take the weight. Then heat the area around the bolt, not the bolt, needs to be pretty hot. If the weight doesn’t turn the bolt straight away leave it loaded and walk away you may find it has moved later on. Last resort cut it off to show your the boss!

marcijunebug haha well, now I got something to look forward too! Here's my unsolicited advice for ya 1. Use double throw hammer & give the bolts a wack or two. It'll loosen the rust up 2.when taking off rusty bolts.. Crank the bolt off a few turns & then crank back on a few turns. That ensures the threads stay intact and any debris is removed..saves from the heads just breaking off. That's a pisser! 3.dont forget shift coupler & brake lines! Ok that's enough from me... rusty bolts ! aint that the fun of it all , try this, try that. I got a millwaulkee cordless impact wrench. man they have 3 times the power of a pneumatic . I use it all the time now , indispensable. but if the bolts are rounded off that cant help. sometimes plug welding a bigger nut on top of the old one and using an impact can free it up. good luck . looking forward to the next 6 episodes. I wish I was filming when I restored my 68. oh well, next one I guess.

You might want to get some six sided sockets. I keep a set of short and long reach impact sockets from Harbor Freight in 3/8 and 1/2 handy. They are cheap but I've never broken one yet.
@marcijunebug
@marcijunebug 4 жыл бұрын
yep! I know 12 point not the best choice for seized bolts...6 sided won't slip as bad, learned that when I was about 5 years old! my Dad taught me well!...tune in to the next video...I bust 5 sockets...and yep they are 6 sided ones! 😉
@JamesCouch777
@JamesCouch777 4 жыл бұрын
@@marcijunebug yes, unless you get the impact sockets, the six sided ones are actually weaker than the 12. Don't give up, you'll get them one way or another. Might have to weld some big nuts over the bolt heads and then twist them off...lol.
@somebeech30
@somebeech30 5 жыл бұрын
I dont if it will help..but sometimes if you find a nut the same size you can set it on top of the hex of the bolt and if you have a wire welder you can weld the in side of the nut and the heat from the weld will penetrate the threads of the rusty bolt to help loosen,,its a long shoot if i explained it in detail.

just a imo tip. Do not cut the heads off those bolts for the reduction boxes. I have been working on Harleys for years. A lot of harley riders only use a crescent wrench and vice grips which causes rounded bolt heads. I have used a torch or angle grinder many times to cut the bolt heads off. By far I ended up with vice grips or a pipe wrench on the bolt stud and always cussed myself later. I've seen you weld. Do it, weld a nut on top of the bolt so you can get a socket or box end on the nut. The heat from welding will most lightly help loosen the frozen bolt. If you cut the head off It may seem quicker at the time but you will end up at the machine shop trying to get those studs out cause easy outs won't do it. Like I said IMO.

Have you tried SWEARING at them yet? I don't know if you're trying to keep your videos "kid-friendly", but when dealing w/rusty cars, "Gee Whiz!" doesn't always "cut the mustard". Or transaxle bolts in this case. But if you go this route, keep your son clear, in case some less than ideal language makes it through clenched teeth. Those bolts will come out, believe me. Your neighbors, however, might not come around as often, tho. :D #illgetyouPickleandyourrustyboltstoo

You need an Ugga-Dugga . They make fantastically powerful battery powered impact drills. Like 20 volts now. I have a green Ryobi that I have had for years...and it still works. It was $100 with the battery and charger. I think AVE does harbor freight comparisons to Milwaukee and such...check out his channel..he’s Canadian and pretty funny...dirty....truthful ( listen without your child) It gets you away from having a compressor line and an air impact. And I fear you will need one for this job. Hint....keep it inside as lithium batteries don’t like the cold. Also, IMO I would somehow wall that work space....just something simple...some 1x2s stapled together from the ceiling down, with visqueen sheeting (plastic) .weight the floor stringers down with a sand bag or two after you wrap the plastic around your wall. Because...the roof is great....but the wind would dissuade me from working out there in the winter. Great job! Glad to see another video.

WHEW I THINK YOU NEED a BIGGER BREAKER BAR.............Anyway, those suckers were on there since new and any amount of socket will only round em out..if you can build a dam out of plastic and DUCT SEAL putty, try soaking the bolts with KROIL or liquid WD 40.............and clean around the bolts to let the penetrate creep in a few weeks of soaking might loosen them .....................and throw some rims and tires under the van stacked up ...just in case it fall it can fall on them not you ......................another idea is to make the arm solid by resting the brake drums on scrap wood or cinder block, lose alot of effort in the spongy-ness of the arm.................all else fails drill some small holes thru head of bolt almost into the threads below and inject penetrate spray there yeah keep it a 6 parter!!!!!
