I'm glad that at least you guys got to experience the cold weather in Thailand once. Nowadays, the period of cold weather is very short. In the past it was much colder and longer. until the local people had to come out and gather together to make a fire to create warmth and burning khao lam is an activity that becomes a way of life in winter

Yes somtum isan style is the fermented fish one. The one that you like from before is somtumTai and I would like to recommend tumkowpode(they use corn instate of papaya ) . Have fun and be careful

So happy with you guys! We usually have many temples to visit in this part of the country.Isan is said to be the land of friendly and kind people. Many western people come here to become Buddhist monks which you can visit at Wat pa na na chart( International buddhist monastery ) in Ubon.

In additional to the presented or anouther history and many people will have to come and see over there. That is lintel Narai Banthumsin, one part of Pranomrung it has been lost since Vietnam war and later found it in Chicago, but currently get back then 35 years ago from U.S. goverment. So that became a point of inerest too.

Some Thai don't eat the raw crab in Somtum but some eat, ( The fresh crabs are put in the salty water for some days or weeks) It is put in Somtum Isaan to make the different taste from Somtum Thai ,which is a bit sweeter. I am Thai and I love Somtum with crabs..but I have never eaten it.

There are different style/type of som tom (as foreigners call it "papaya salad"). The one you like and used to is Bangkok style with peanuts and sugar in it and the least hot. Long beans and carrot optional. Carrot is not native to Thailand and was never a thing until the onslaught of tourists. Issan style has fermented/pickled crabs (boo), little ones not from the ocean. This can also include fermented fish (pla ra) but is optional. Thank you for showing how nice Buriram is.

I’ve been to Phanom Rung 2-3 times but never heard of Prasart Muang Tam (although I’m a Thai.). I think Phanom Rung is more famous and there is a day that the sun rises and you can see through the xx doors of the castle. Heard that thousand of people visit the place on that date early in the morning. Correct me if I’m wrong. Anyway, will definitely visit Prasart Muang Tam one day.

The most surprising thing is How did they build this castle by placing stones on top of each other to make it strong? because in those days it didn't have modern tools at all. Where did they get the big stones from? (around there no big stones)and How did they get it because it would be too heavy to cut into squares to put on top of each other? What could they cut it with? And most importantly, it has survived to this day. That's really amazing.

We should’ve ordered sticky rice with it!!! It was rather fishy….but it wasn’t bad!! I just prefer the Thai salad I’m used to eating in Bangkok 🥰❤️

I would recommend to visit "Phanomrung" during raining season because it is more cooler and looks more beautiful when it's compaired the dryness in summer. I think it is the most beautiful of its kind in Thailand.

Larb menu in Isaan is quite salty. The good combination with larb is sticky rice.

Crab Sum Tum is one kind in Isaan. They put crabs in salty water f I r months. That's what they put in sum tum. I spent a couple years in Buriram, Surin and Sisaket. I love the people.

ฉันเข้าใจว่า คุณมาจากยุโรปและถนัดใช้ซ่อมกับอาหารแทบจะทุกประเภทยกเว้นที่เป็นน้ำซุป แต่คนไทยจะใช้ช้อนในการทานอาหารทุกอย่างเช่นตักข้าวเข้าปาก ซึ่งจะทำให้ตักได้ง่าย ตักได้เยอะ และสดวกกว่าซ่อม ส่วนซ่อมจะใช้กับอาหารประเภทเนื้อหรืออะไรที่แข็งๆ หรือเป็นตัวช่วยในการตะล่อมข้าวเข้าช้อนอีกที ถ้าคุณจะลองฝึกใช้แบบคนไทยมันอาจจะทำให้คุณทานไทยได้สะดวกและง่ายขึ้น
