Lombok is predominately two thirds Muslim. Know as the island of 1000 mosque’s. The people are extremely friendly, you look at them and smile they will always smile back. Lombok and sumbawa are known as Nusa Tengara Barat with a population of 3.5 million people. Prices on Lombok are much much cheaper than Bali. The main city on Lombok is Mataram which has extensive shopping opportunities including two large malls, one is epicentrum which would compare to any large European shopping centre in design. The islands you referred to were the Gilis, number one was Gili trawangan (the party island). This place is crazy and is a must for most young European tourists for partying, diving, snorkeling and lovely island beaches. Number two Gili Meno ( the honeymoon island) also has everything Gili Trawangan has but on a smaller scale and Gili Air is referred to as the quiet island with lots of night spots to party but a less hectic environment. It costs $2:20 Aus to get the public boat from bangsal harbour on Lombok to each of these islands and takes about 20 minutes or you can get the fast boat for $8 Aus and a five minute trip. A popular trek on Lombok is mount Rinjani with spectacular sunrise views. Rinjani is an active volcano an arduous two day hike up very steep slippery tracks. Most people who have climbed it said it is the greatest place they have ever been but would not do it again because of the hard track which can only be done with an organised trekking company. The walk can be longer to include hot pools with monkeys swimming in them. Kuta Lombok (down south) is the main surfing area and is also the location of the new Mandalika Grand Prix racing circuit. The world motorcycle Grand Prix was held here 19 November 2021 with high profile world events to be held here approximately every 2 months. The next event is in March 2022. You mentioned sengigi which is the party spot on Lombok with clubs open until 6 am and the main tourist area.

@@Danygotaworldtosee ha ha ha. No I like people to know what this place has to offer. There is heaps more I could tell you about the people extremely interesting culture. As Bali has Balinese people Lombok has Sasak people, they help each other always. Strangers will ask for money and Sasak people always give it if they have it, usually 50 cents Aus which buys a meal. If you don’t have money you just say so and they will move On with no sign of disappointment or anger. Today at the traffic lights an 8 year old boy came to my scooter because it was lunch time so my wife gave him 50 cents. They also share everything cigarettes water bottles. It’s common for my wife’s family to visit have food then ask for a dollar for petrol to get home, they are not greedy and only ask for what they need.

You mean well but some of your facts aren't accurate: - Lombok is over 85% Muslim - Mataram is the capital & administrative hub of Lombok. Other than the shopping centres you mentioned it caters mainly to the locals as it is inland & most people visit these islands for the beaches - the nearest Gili island to the shore is Air then Meno than Trawangan. In terms of size it's the other way around - the world motorcycle grand prix didn't take place at the newly opened Mandalika circuit on 19 November 2021. The race that eventually took place after all the heavy rains during the weekend of 20-21 November 2021 was the world superbike championship which is rather different to MotoGP - this year On 20 March 2022 MotoGP will be back at Mandalika circuit for the first time since 1997 - in addition the 2nd world superbike championship (WSBK) will be held over the weekend of 12-13 November 2022 - the southern side of the island has some of the most pristine beaches even rivalling Australia - I've done the 3 day crater & lake trek to Mt Rinjani & once restrictions are up in Australia & Indonesia looking forward to doing the climb again as it was memorable

Mataram is no longer the administrative hub of NTB because Jakarta found out Lombok was keeping the money from the government meant to go to sumbawa so it is no longer distributed from here.

try to go to Telawas beach in central Lombok, close to Selong belanak too. the beach is quiet, but access to the asphalt road is damaged. even though the beach is beautiful and has white sand.

My wife and I spent a week in Lombok in 1996 on our honeymoon, we stayed in Senggigi at a small hotel, there were only about five other people staying there, we took a tour of the Island one day and a boat trip out to Gili Trawangan to go snorkelling. It was really quiet and super relaxing, the people were really nice and we'd catch a Bemo into Kuta Lombok to go to the supermarket or the one bar, which was a weird Mexican themed place, I remember eating Tacos there and watching the Melbourne Cup on TV with some old Dutch people.

I always thought like you but now I have been living hear 2 years I don’t think it will grow so quickly. One is because it’s a Muslim island alcohol is mainly only sengigi or Kuta Lombok area. You can get it other places but best to ask people where. Also the mosques start at 5 am for prayer so can be annoying at times. Most mosque have there PA at a lower level for morning prayer and louder for lunch time and 4 pm. It’s a bit like living near a train line, you get used to it.

Hi.. Prior to COVID-19 I’ve been to Bali since I was a kid in the 60s and at least 70 times. I’m 66 now.. 3 years ago we went to Lombok.. I need to be honest here. If it wasn’t for the villa and going to gorgeous Gilli Islands l would have gone straight back to Bali. Why? This gorgeous island ( as l remember from my first visit in 1972) has been destroyed by visions of rubbish, plastic EVERYWHERE.!!!!!🙁🙁 I was shocked. I could not believe it…. And trying to find anything like decent shops, restaurants, cafes was near impossible. Sorry to be negative. But this was my first and sadly last impression of Lombok. It needs serious help, serious government support to clean it up…
