Everyone in Melbourne knows where Flinders Street Station is, so if you’re meeting someone in town it’s common to meet ‘under the clocks’ at Flinders Street.

As a Victorian, I want to thank you for such an un-biased video about my state's capital city. No jazz, pizazz or in your face, just an honest look at our capital, Melbourne has many hidden gems and so many places to see that a week's exploring cannot hope to cover it all.

That’s exactly how I felt. The stunningly beautiful Victorian Library, visiting the Shrine of Remembrance and going with dad every Saturday as a child to the Victoria Market and he’d buy a large box of fruit and veggies. Then he’d buy us one of those yummy hot jam donuts. I also worked in the city - haven’t been in for a few years. Happy memories watching the vid 😊

That shaft inside the Shrine of Remembrance shines a light on the word LOVE at 11 am. EDITED …on Remembrance Day.
@peterfromgw46153 ай бұрын
Just a slight error. The light shines on the word “love” at 11am on Rememberance Day (11 November each year). Grüße aus Australien. Tschüss.
@judileeming15893 ай бұрын
@@peterfromgw4615 thank you for informing me about that. I knew that the shaft had been fitted with two mirrors to ensure that daylight saving was taken into account, but I think I must have confused the adjustments they make with it happen every day and not just Remembrance Day. Maybe with modern technology that will be a possibility in the future.
@peterfromgw46153 ай бұрын
@@judileeming1589I believe there is some astronomical review/adjustment done each year with those mirrors just prior to Rememberance Day. It was only a few years ago when I came across a news article on that.
@steve--smith2 ай бұрын
The advent of daylight savings time in summer (clocks advance one hour) means that the original shaft architecture shines at the wrong time (not the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month) on the tomb of the unknown soldier. So they use artificial means to correct the time.

I moved from the middle US to Melbourne about 15 years ago. It took me years to stop saying the 2nd syllable as "burrrrn"! fyi, street art and graffiti are pretty much the same thing, with more and less talent evident. There are a lot of untalented types spraying random stuff over some impressive stuff in Hosier Lane, which at first seems like a shame. But if they didn't, no one would come paint something else good over the eventual build up of crap. It changes every time I go down there. That paint must be very thick by now.
@JazzyTravels-bp1pq2 ай бұрын
ohh for sure. The key for me (recently) is to just say "mel-bin". The paint looked pretty thick when I was there (Hosier Lane).

Yes pre covid Hosiery lane had some creative stuff , the Council got involved and promoted it as a tourist destination and even paid for "art" that's why its mostly crap now.

While some of these people have artistic ability, the majority are just vandals tagging everywhere like it's something clever. It's not. Never was. Most of what we see unsolicited on the walls is pure vandalism. I have nothing to say about permitted efforts but painting on things you don't personally own is ugly and destructive.
