A little 'warning' to all tourists who visit a real German beer garden for the first time: most beer gardens are associated with one brewery, so in many cases you won't get beers from other breweries there. Don't be disappointed, that's just how it is. The beer gardens were the traditional sales point of the breweries who had their huge cellars right under the cobblestones of the garden. It was the best way to keep the beer cool during the summer, so they stored their barrels fairly deeply underground.

Last week when I visited Dusseldorf with my German colleague, he took me to a brewery which is "zum Schlussel", I don't know what it means but the beer is really amazing and we even took a grand tour of the brewery about how they make beers. Nice.

@@leitaochen8889 We areapproximately in the year 1540 in the Middle Ages. Originally, the keys (SCHLUSSEL) to the city gates in Dusseldorf were left overnight in nearby inns. The next restaurant today called "zum Schlüssel". The name and trademark of the brewery are reminiscent of this tradition. In short, the key is the emblem of this historic brewery 😉😜😇

If you want to see and experience Germany and German culture, DO NOT VISIT BAVARIA. Go to Hamburg, go to Cologne, go to Freiburg. Bavaria is to Germany what Texas is to the USA. And I tell you, the difference from Bavaria to the northern coastal culture is bigger than that. If you want to see your stereotypes of "Germany" confirmed, then go to Munich. But if you want more than just your expectations be fulfilled, first visit the rest of Germany, and start with the coast, especially the Frisian islands. Your students will see a Germany they never expected.

@@mogon721 I took some of my German students on 3-week trips each summer for years. We visited about 5 cities each time. Munich was always one of them, but the others were outside of Bavaria. We used the train system liberally. We saw a balance of types of places, and different cultures. Their favorite place each year? Weinheim, a suburb outside of Heidelberg.

I don’t even like beer, but it’s one of (the many) reasons I love your videos. I love Brian’s beer economics and 2:thirsty. ❤️❤️ That pretzel looked amazing! I can relate to the rescheduling of plans because of weather. We are starting our 3rd month here in Mexico during the rainy season. 🤦🏼‍♀️. This last month has been quite a challenge to see and do things because of the weather. Oh well. It’s all part of the adventure. Looking forward to your videos from Italy so much! That’s one of the 5 countries we are considering for retirement. You might find this interesting. We are currently in Playa Zipolite in Oaxaca, Mexico. This was a really great and warm harted video about my home city of Munich, thanks for that. When visiting the Frauenkirche from time stamp 1:44 onward, you probably missed a detail next to the main entrance, the "Devils footprint" Here shamelessly copied from Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frauenkirche,_Munich?oldformat=true Quote: In another version of the legend, the devil made a deal with the builder to finance construction of the church on the condition that it contain no windows. The clever builder, however, tricked the devil by positioning columns so that the windows were not visible from the spot where the devil stood in the foyer. When the devil discovered that he had been tricked, he could not enter the already consecrated church. The devil could only stand in the foyer and stomp his foot furiously, which left the dark footprint that remains visible in the church's entrance today.

Great that you made it to München. I still remember it being a beautiful and also lively city although I went way back in the mid 70s when I was still university age. I went for a few days during summer vacation. That was back during over a decade of annual trips when I used to spend whole summers in DK instead of 1-3 weeks in later years. Back then, I would travel to other places in Europe or North Africa (early 80s for North Africa) for a few days or a week or so and then head back up to DK which has always been my base. It's unfortunate that you got rain. I was lucky as I was there in summer and it was dry and bright sunshine. I'm looking forward to your adventures in Italy. Sicily is one place that has been on my list for quite a while. I've been to a lot of other places in Italy, from north to south, but never to Sicily. Continue the fun! Greetings from Los Angeles

I apologise for the perceived negativity, but maybe you can take this as constructive criticism. You didn't seem to go very far in Munich; the market, the beer garden, the city hall and the brewhouse are all within four minutes walk. The Residenz is not much farther. Spreading out to the edges is more rewarding that sticking to the tourist highlights. It rains in Europe! So, adjust how you feel about rain and carry rain clothes. Shorts as clothing screams 'American'. Perhaps dress like the locals.
@BrianandCarrie
@BrianandCarrie Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, we were there for a very short period of time. As far as the rain is concerned we are from Seattle where it rains 8+ months a year! We are used to it. 😆 We carry some light rain or warmer clothing but being the minimalist that we are and only using carry-on luggage you have to pick and choose what you decide to pack. When we decide to do a cold climate destination, we will definitely pack definitely. We see thousands of locals wearing shorts every day. We are American and like any other country on the planet there is nothing wrong with where you are from. Good people are simply good people.

It's Saturday morning and just catching up with your videos and like always it's another good one - thank you! It's really too bad that you were unable to get to the Weihenstephaner Brewery. Not only is the beer delicious but the brewery tour is really very good. And, bonus the town of Freising is super cute with lots of great hiking, walking and cycling paths. You'll have to try and get there another time. I am super curious though as to why, as budget travellers and with an open calendar, you chose to adventure through some of the most expensive countries in Europe during the summer and in particular August? The whole peak season (mid-June to September) is NUTS with August probably being the absolute worse. Most Europeans holiday for the month of August. And, then there's Ferragosto which is the traditional holiday in Italy that runs I believe from August 15 to September 1 when Italian families tend to holiday so the country is even busier and the smaller family-run stores and restaurants are often closed. Mid-September on is quieter, slightly cooler and always cheaper ... win, win and triple win! Anyway, just curious ... travel on and enjoy!!
@BrianandCarrie
@BrianandCarrie Жыл бұрын
Hi! We really wish we had more time in Munich to explore. Missing out on visiting the brewery was a real downside for us. We absolutely agree with the time of year and traveling, unfortunately so much goes into our deciding the path we travel. When you have 5 months to fill, dealing with Schengen rules and trying to go in the direction of nicer and warmer weather as fall/winter arrives - it just made sense to start in the north and head south. It was worth it though and why we budget to save on travel during some months so we have money to spend in the months we find ourselves in spendier places. Cheers!!

Omg you two what a way to start the European fall. I haven't had a Lowenbrau beer in years. In Italy you'll find Doner Kebab for street food and go to the one in Rome that the locals go to during their lunch hour because it's fresh. Naturally pasta and 🍕. Some coffee shops in the local communities might have a pastry shop next to it and you can have a cappuccino and pastry for breakfast and make sure that you are standing up at the coffee counter and drink your water before you have your coffee because it is good & strong. It's how the Italians start there day and end there nights.

Thank you very much for your impressions and the fantastic pictures of my hometown! Hope you enjoy your trip to Italy with all of its stunning views and its exceptional food! If you'd like to find great restaurants: there's a book called Slow Food - Osterie d'Italia where you can find great original. All my italian friends use that. Lots of fun!

Loving all your stops Brian & Carrie! Thank you for sharing. Couple of questions, which city did you like better and why? Nuremberg or Munich? Also, where did you stay in each city? You usually put those links and talk about what hotels or BNBs you stay in, in the cities you visit. So looking forward to your Italy videos! 😊😊

Hi! We are going to be having a recap video that will go over all the places we stayed, our thoughts, and costs coming out in a few weeks. In the meantime, we really liked both places for totally different reasons. Nuremberg due to it being a bit more compact and a bit smaller city feel, but then Munich had a lot more to explore and see. I will be sure the links for where we stayed in both locations are in the video description - when we are moving faster we forget those little things (thanks for the reminder 😉). Cheers!!

You guys also should have gone to the english garden. Its right next to Odeonsplatz where you have been. It's a huge park in the center of munich and very beautiful as well. Also maybe a visit to one of the lakes around the town like Starnberger See or Tegernsee would have been nice for you. The mountains are very close and the scenery is astonishing.

We explained in the video that we ran out of time to see everything that we wanted to see and specifically talked about the English Gardens. Thank you for watching! Cheers!
