Yeah when I was 8 years old and listening to it for the first time I got it no granted that was a long damn time ago cuz I'm 50 now. But I got it.. I see so many people listening and just not getting what he means it goes right over their head. And I just want to smack my forehead because people our dense. When you start the song and say he said I love her to I die and he stopped Loving her today would mean he died the song is literal and people just don't get it I don't understand why they don't get it. Maybe because they don't do the poetry thing and try to overthink the same song instead of taking it for what it says😅 but it is a good song and I love it.

Amen brother. A man will carry a broken heart around like a bag of bricks his entire life and the only thing worse for him would be forgetting his one true love. The worst part is trying not to let it show, keeping it buried deep inside where no one can see your weakness. Not easy being a man most days.

I am 81 years old, and I lost one of my brothers-in-laws today who died at 82. We grew up listening to George Jones, possibly one of the best country music performers ever. He had a completely unique Voice, that no one could copy. He apparently had a serious problem with alcohol, and it came between him and Tammy. I truly believe that George did love Tammy, but not as much as he loved alcohol.
@Martin.Wilson
@Martin.Wilson 2 ай бұрын
George recorded this song when he and his one true love, Tammy Wynette had split up for good. He tried for days to make it through a session, but kept breaking down in drunken tears. Finally, his producer called Tammy and told her what was going on. She came down to the studio and when George saw her, he pulled himself together and recorded the song in one take, which is the take we here on the album. His close friend Alan Jackson sang this song at George's funeral....one of the most emotional performances ever.

@@audiemurphy2614 My uncle was a studio musician in Nashville during these years and the circumstances surrounding the recording of this song were common knowledge and the stuff of legends. Jones was only able to rouse himself out of his drunken stupor (after many booze and drug fueled days and over 200 takes) and record this song when Tammy finally appeared in the studio. It may not be in the history books, but this happened just the same.

Every year on our anniversary we would take a big cake with us to the bar and share it with everyone. And the song we would request the band to sing for us was “He Stopped Loving Her Today”. Many people who had never really listened to the words would laugh when the band announced that we requested it for our anniversary. My dad was one of George Jones’ biggest fans. He used to frequent the bars quite often especially after he and my mom got divorced, and lots of people told me he loved to karaoke his songs especially this one. This was real country music.

This is REAL country. And he lived it, or watched others who did & wrote of it. When I was growing up this is how we workout to view each other and live. I was born in 1962. And I'm 62. Some songs got overplayed on the radio back then this is what we grew up on amongst other things. What informed our hearts and formed our character.

Hi how you doing today Lillian My name is DAVEN LEE POWE from Duluth Minnesota born and raised now I'm in waconia My daddy he was born and raised in Laurel Mississippi I was born in Duluth but I always had a thing for country music like George Jones Merle Haggard Johnny Cash Willie Nelson all the greats you know what I mean the ones that tell all the stories most stories are about their lives and how they lived and shared those songs with people around the world I watch your video last night for the first time and true story behind the song and why he's so sad when he sings that song it's because when him and Tammy wynette split apart he fell apart it broke his heart because he love her so much.... so his songwriter creator told George I still think you got it in you and I have a song for you it's about a woman you love so much that you can't stop loving her until the day you die even though you never be able to get her back.and when this song came to be it got to the point on how much he tries so hard to tell her he loves her and wants her back and he's he knew that he couldn't get her back that's when his songwriter creator said I got a song for you George I think you still got it in you George the songwriter says to him.... And I guess it took a long time to complete this song because it was just so sad until the day when it was finally finished Tammy wynette was there to listen to it and I don't know how that man held it in he went through that whole song to the end perfectly Even though it was killing him inside he completed the song....He stopped loving her today and that's the story behind that beautiful sad song reason why I'm saying this cuz I know and felt how George felt I went thru something similar relationship where I knew in the end that I couldn't have her cuz she was in love with someone else so I felt George's pain and I could relate to him and it became my favorite song and I listen to it all the time and it never gets old Thank you for sharing your story last night Lillian I push the like button and subscribe to your channel Thank you for hearing my story watch that show it's called GEORGE AND TAMMY c one season 6 episodes and you'll see it in the last season 6 on how that song was created God bless you Lillian from Daven Lee Powe and have a good day and then take care 🥲😁😎

I heard (on TV or the radio, I can't remember which.) George talk about the song, which I believe became his greatest hit. He didn't write it. He didn't have anything to do with writing it. It was pitched to him, and his reaction was "no one is going to want to hear that sad thing". He didn't want anything to do with it. Eventually he was talked into recording it, and the rest is history. You tell a good story, but I believe George. It is sad that Lilly couldn't be bothered enough to listen well enough to even comprehend the story line.

That was the experience he drew from for the emotion he shows in the song, but he didn’t write it, Bobby Braddock and Curly Putnam did. Famously he hated the song when they were recording it. He refused to sing it correctly instead doing it to the tune of Kris Kristofferson’s “Help Me Make It Through The Night”, and when it was done he told his producer “Billy Sherrill that “nobody is gonna buy that morbid sonofabitch!” He was wrong.

The way I understand the song is they once were lovers, then she left. "He said I'll love you till I die. She told him you'll forget in time." However, he never moved on and still longed for her years later. "He kept some letters by the bed dated 1962. He had underlined in red ever single I live you." He kept his promised and loved her until he died. "He stopped loving her today." Everyone was wondering if she would come to say her last goodbye. Possibly finding she still loves him or possibly just to pay her last respects. "She came to see him one last time. We all wondered if she would." I think it is actually more sad than if he was married to her.

I grew up around country but for the longest time it was rock and roll for me. Led Zeppelin, GFR, Santana.....so on and so on. As I grew older and more MATURE I began to see the beauty in Country. I discovered somewhat late the joys of Marty Robbins, Merle Haggard and yes George Jones. I love even OPERA now. Yes, Mama Mia! Give me some PAVAROTTI! You have opened a joyous door that if you choose to explore it, it will amaze you. May I suggest that you spend the time and money to watch the PBS documentary series on Country Music. It is Ken Burns at his finest, and you will begin to appreciate what Country is all about. May Patti Cline bless you my child.

Absolutely LOVE hard rock, blues, classic rock, grunge, metal, Nu-Metal, etc. (This includes classical and symphony as well), but I grew up listening to classic country and 50s-60s golden oldies with my parents. You might like the "Outlaw Country" sub-genre. Artists like Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Hank Williams Jr., etc. Maybe give it a listen. I'd love to see what you think.

As far as George Jones, there are a vast number of sad songs he sang. Of them, some of the saddest other than He Stopped Loving Her Today where If Drinking Dont Kill Me (Her Memory Will) The Visit Second Handed Flowers Wild Irish Rose Its All In My Mind I Must Have Done Something Bad Tomorrow Never Comes I could keep naming them off, but thats probably too many already 😆 Take your pick, they're all great songs. Another super great artist to look into more, actually, pretty much the greatest ever, is Elvis Presley, his performances and the songs he sang and the way he sang them are legendary.
