You're not tripping at all, I interpreted it like that as well. And I'm sorry for the trauma you went through. I've been there as well, even once trapped inside of a coma for a month, dreaming hellacious dreams and not knowing what was real. I'm so glad James was able to communicate his pains through music, and I'm so glad that you opened up to share your experience as well. Many of us out here have similar experiences and it really helps when people open their hearts and reveal painful truths, it's cathartic and helps all who have goodness in their heart. Every quiver in your voice as you were relating that story kept me tearing up and relating with you. My heart goes out to you, and I appreciate the honest wonderful reactions you do. Continue being yourself, you are loved. :-)

Thank you for sharing a bit of your personal pain and self with us. I could tell that was hard for you. That couldn’t have been easy. You may have had a vulnerability and a tremble in your voice, but I can tell that you’re a strong one and by being here and still rocking, you’re showing the world that you can take anything it throws at you. Here’s to you. Here’s to better days in the sun.

When an artist makes a song and sends it out into the world, it is no longer their song. It belongs to you the listener, and whatever it means to you, however it touches you, is exactly how it is supposed to be.
@continentalaquatics27252 жыл бұрын
James said the song was originally about crib death. Producer Bob Rock persuaded the band to make a song that was a little bit more consumer friendly. This music video was regularly on MTV for practically a year back in 92-93 and paved the way for a more expansive group of fans. The Black Album is controversial amongst many Metallica fans, but it marked a period where James’ lyrics started becoming a bit more introspective. This song was just an opening shot to gain attention from the record company, and what a great idea it was!
@JBeck332 жыл бұрын
Yes, they lost some fans because of it. But, they gained many, many more.
@baconwafers49282 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Black Album was the last one they dropped that I liked. Too hard to deny the energy from tracks like Of Wolf & Man, and My Friend of Misery (my 2 favorites off the album.). And I was listening to Kill Em All on a cassette tape mailed from one of my pen pals in Cali. It's how it got around back in the day. Caught Master of Puppets opening tour & And Justice For All (with Queensryche opening doing all of Operation Mindcrime, shit was amazing night). But I don't blame Metallica. And I can accept I have grown throughout their career. And some tastes have changed. Nuclear Assault was in daily rotation for me and now I might pop it on when cleaning occasionally.

Lilly Jane - Since you just reacted to Enter Sandman, this would be a great time to listen to The Warning's recreation of the song they did for Metallica's Blacklist album last year. They were combined with Canadian pop singer Alessia Cara for the project. The Warning team also produced a great video to go along with the song. I think you will like it.

I second this recommendation. This song is iconic and has been covered time and again, but The Warning with Alessia Cara made it their own. I like their version quite possibly more than the original. If nothing else, it'll lead you down the rabbit hole of great music that is The Warning. 🤘🤘🤘

your interpretation of the lyrics are yours, and that's the point of music like this, there's a million different ways to think about it and try to figure out what it means, the most important thing is to figure out what it means for you, and seeing your reaction and the, for lack of a better word, excitement, to how you relate to the lyrics/song is exactly what the song is supposed to do. to me, the video is an amalgam of all the common childhood nightmares: falling / snakes in your bed / being chased by a scary truck, etc. these were dreams we all had as kids. adults have our own nightmares too --- missing a deadline at work / not being able to pay the bills / spouse leaving you for someone else / and the WORST OF ALL, anything bad happening to your kids that's what makes this song so relatable. we all have fears. our fears change as we get older, but it's a universal part of the human condition.

There is an interview with James Hatfield. He said that when he was a child he was afraid of everything. This song is about his own fear of the dark as a child. He was also raised in a very religious household so this is a common prayer. So he combined his fears with the prayer and the assurances from his parents that were of no Solace to him.

Megadeth would be another great band to look into. The guitarist and lead singer of Megadeth, Dave Mustaine, was the original lead guitarist of Metallica before being booted during the bands move from California to New York to record their first Studio albums, Kill Them All. Although there was a ton of anger and animosity between them (especially from Dave), Both parties have since made up and for the most part are in good terms; and make up half of the Big 4 of Thrash Metal. Songs from Rust in Piece, Youthinasia, and Countdown to Extinction are usually considered their best, but older songs like In My Darkest Hour, Peace Sells, and the Conjuring are all excellent too. The begging bass line from Peace Sells was actually the intro to MTV News for many years. Megadeth does tend to be faster and more technical versus Metallica, although I do like James Hetfield’s voice better.
