My girl's reaction was not only spot-on, it was one of the best ever first-time listening reactions to this song. most seem to be confused and lost with the overall message and use of the movie clip. MORE METALLICA: Fade To Black, Dyer's Eve, Disposable Heroes, Welcome Home - Sanitarium. These all have similar dark profound messages. Fade to Black is a widely loved and popular song as it really hits hard in the feels. My personal favorite song by Metallica is "Creeping Death" which is a somewhat cynical/jaded dark perspective of God's wrath as it relates to the story of Moses and Egypt. I think you may be ready to see them play LIVE - which is a whole different can of awesome-sauce. I HIGHLY recommend "Creeping Death" LIVE - MOSCOW 1991" I guarantee your mind aint blown enough until you see that performance and that crowd! Mad love and respect to you!

Another Metallica masterpiece based on the movie and book, "Johnny Got His Gun" by Dalton Trumbo. Imagine a young World War I soldier severely wounded. He's alive, but missing all his arms, legs, mouth, eyes, ears and face. He's just a living torso. How do you communicate with the rest of the world? How do you understand where you are, what day it is right now? What would be the most humane way to determine your future, letting him die or show everyone what the horrors of war can do to a person? Not to mention, the insanity of trying to figure all this out between times of being sedated and wide awake. What if this were one of us?

And Trumbo's book took its name from lyrics ("Johnny get your gun, get your gun, get your gun... ") from the 1917 song "Over There", by George M. Cohan. So what we've got here from Metallica, is a song inspired by a movie, based on a book, inspired by a song, and I don't know why I find that so fascinating, but I do.

Lily really gets into her reactions. “One” is one of the deepest messed up songs I’ve heard. I read that Metallica bought the rights to the movie “Johnny Got His Gun” rather than paying royalties every time the music video or song was played. This seemed to be one of her first reactions to Metallica because she didn’t know that James Hetfield was the lead singer, but I love the fact that she did research on them and learned about the band and James. It added a lot of depth and insight to her other Metallica reactions.

I’m an old guy who watched MTV videos after school every day back in the late 1980’s when this came out. I LOVE watching peoples’ first reactions to this song and video. It really was a life-altering experience for me. Metallica was the first time I genuinely got into heavier music. Not just the Def Leppards and the Guns N’ Roses… but thrash metal. Speed metal. And this was the first Metallica song I ever heard. If you visit the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, you can learn the into of this song in their ‘jam-studio’ - it’s so awesome! I deployed twice to Iraq and once to AFG, sustained combat every goddamn tour, and although I was wounded physically in significant way really, the s*^t we saw and had to do did in fact damage me emotionally and psychologically...the worst thing about it is the funerals I've attended for a couple of my brothers in uniform who decided to take their own lives, seein their parents, and the wife of one, cry and hurt the way they did is something I won't ever forget....

Thank you for your service. My father was a United States Marine. He was deployed for Desert Storm and spent 13 months boots on the ground in Vietnam. As did my Uncle. My husband did a tour in Desert Tour and my baby sister did 3 tours in Afghanistan. I had my own war. I get it and the gift of PTSD. My Dad passed on the 6th of August this year. I see the state of our nation, and I despair. Don't go back if you can help it. I love my country but not the puppet masters.

This is one of my favorite songs of all time so I always enjoy watching others' reactions when they first hear it and see the video. The song was inspired by the film "Johnny Got His Gun" (which is where the film clips and audio came from), and the film was in turn derived from a book by the same name. This song became a big anti-war anthem in the Heavy Metal community, and when Metallica played this song live at the Grammy's it scared the shiznits out of the stuffed suits in the audience. (You REALLY should watch that performance, seriously). Fun fact, the rapid fire snare hits are supposed to mimic the sound of machine gun fire. Metallica the band: James Hetfield - Lead Singer, Lyricist, Songwriter, Rythm Guitarist 1981-Current Lars Ulrich - Drummer, Songwriter 1981-Current Kirk Hammet - Lead Guitarist, Guitar Riff/Solo Writer 1983-Current Cliff Burton (RIP) - Bassist 1982-1986 Jason Newstead - Bassist 1986-2001 Robert Trujillo - Bassist 2002-Current (All three Bassists sang backing vocals for live performances and wrote the majority of the bass riffs/solos during their respective tenures.) During the first two years of the band's existence, Ron McGovney played bass guitar until he left and was replaced by Cliff Burton (formerly of Trauma, and getting Cliff in the band was the reason the Metallica relocated from Los Angeles to San Francisco), and Dave Mustaine (founder, singer, songwriter, guitarist of Megadeath) played lead guitar until his drunken violent behavior forced the band to kick him out and pick up Kirk Hammett (formerly of Exodus) to replace him. James had read the book and wrote the song afterwards. When they decided to finally do a music video on this album, they had the single picked out, but only later learned that Trumbo's book had been made into a movie. Since they had no interest in acting themselves, they decided to license the movie and include selected scenes along with the band's playing. Once it took off as a single, they figured they'd have to use part of the video on tour, which meant that they'd have to re-license the movie. So instead, the bought the movie outright.

I stumbled on this as one of those yootoob suggestions in the right hand column and was compelled to watch. Until the song finished, I thought that Lily had probably viewed this prior to making the video. However, her reaction in that nanosecond at the end of the song was the same as mine when I first heard the track on The Friday Rock Show on Radio One here in the UK (Hosted by the legendary Tommy Vance). Probably '88 or '89, on a mono bedside alarm clock/radio(!), and the first time I'd experienced Metallica. The utter silence that follows the intensity and heaviness of the song had as much impact as the song itself, and 30+ years on, I still experience the same exact feeling every time I hear the song, despite having seen and heard plenty of so called heavier, detuned bands in the interim.(& for the younger heavy musos, it's heavy despite being in E standard/concert pitch (Not Drop Z or whatever)!😉😉🤘🤘) Same goes for Slayer (Same era, as respected and significant, and mostly in Eb) 🤘🤘(Which leads to a suggestion for a possible future video...... "Angel Of Death", "South Of Heaven", "Seasons In The Abyss", "Mandatory Suicide".......Do It!😉) (Or Black Sabbath.....) Great reaction. This was actually Metallica's very first music video. The clips you're seeing in the video are from the movie Johnny got his gun. Metallica has quite a few good songs, and a lot of their music carries a specific theme that is often incredibly relatable. They also have a couple instrumental songs on their first four albums that were done with their friend and beloved original bassist Cliff Burton who tragically passed away in 1986 or 1987 I can't remember exactly when. Anesthesia (pulling teeth), Call off Kthulu, Orion, and To live is to Die. All incredible instrumentals. Master of Puppets is their best album by far and 4 years ago it was added to the library of congress to be preserved for generations to come because of its impact on music. It is the only rock/metal album in history to be added to the library of congress.

This song was based on "Johnny Got His Gun", an anti war book written about a WW1 veteran who stepped on a landmine which blew off his arms and legs, and left him blind, deaf and unable to speak, but completely alert and awake. It's a terrifying and really sad book. Thinking about how it would be feel to literally be a prisoner in your own mind scared the shit out of me when I was younger.

Hetfield actually bought the rights to the movie. Of course, The author of the book and producer of the movie, Dalton Trumbo, was not actually anti-war. He was just a Stalinist.

Also, operation barbarossa didn't happen until 1941. Also it was pulled by Trumbo and his publishers following the invasion because as an anti war book, the communist party did not want to be seen as critical of the Allies and siding with the Axis powers. So yes, the book was decidedly anti war as was Trumbo.

And then once the Cold War began, he became "anti-war" again. When World War II started as a matter of perspective. For the United States, it started in December 1941. For most European countries, it started in September 1939 with the exception of the countries that were already occupied by the Nazis. In Africa, World War II began in October 1935, with the invasion of Ethiopia. And in Asia, World War II began in July 1937 with the Japanese invasion of China

"One" is just a masterpiece. No question about it! Great reaction to one of the greatest "anti-war-songs" ever. Greets from Germany! I would suggest another Band for you by the name TOOL. In many peoples opinion TOOL is the pinacle of rock music in our times. Start with "Schism", a not so complicated one to start with. Go with audio only, because the videos are often very distracting form the music and the lyrics, which are deep as f... most of the time. Have fun!

I know this video is a few months old... but quick scroll through the comments didnt seem to show anyone mention this.. so on the off-chance you 'do' see this message.... The Story that is used in the song/video is based on one in which a soldier loses his legs, eyes, ears, mouth and nose to a German shell. Later the Hospital Doctor decides to essentially treat him as an 'experiment' i how a person's body would react to being in such a situation. The only part of his body the soldier has control of is his head, which he starts to use to tap out morse code (the SOS and Kill Me lines). The nurse 'tries' to grant him his wish, but the Doctor catches her in the act and prevents it from happening... the end of the story is that last scene, where people are celebrating a holiday in the loby while the soldier is still there, trapped inside whats left of his body, unable to end his own suffering.

I love watching reaction videos to Metallica because they are my favorite band, and I love to watch people be hit by their music the same way I was, but rarely do I feel inclined to comment my thoughts. But I want to here because it is very rare for someone listening to this song for the first time, to entirely understand what the lyrics and accompanying movie clips are trying to convey. It can be, and is a lot to digest and fully interpret correctly with a first time listen, which therefore means a lot of people miss a lot of the meaning the song puts forward, which is a shame. But you got it all and really paid attention to what was being sang, and conveyed. It's rare someone understands this song like that on a first listen, so I commend you for that! I hope you're hooked now and are incredibly interested to see what else the band has to offer haha. My next recommendation would be their live performance of Fade to Black, Lincoln Nebraska 2018. That is probably their best performance of that song and it's relatively recent too so it might be fun to see what the band can still do at this point in their career haha.

This was the 1st Metallica song I ever heard as a youth, just on the edge of manhood. I stayed up late and snuck out of bed to watch Much Music, and this video came on. It was so raw and emotional, just visceral. I couldn't go back to sleep after watching/listening to it, i was so shocked and confused by the subject matter! To this day, I get goosebumps listening to it. It remains my favorite Metallica song to this day.

I remember my first time listening to this song was just a couple years ago and I was just searching through rock playlists to get a feel for what real rock is as when I was younger my best friend which was also my neighbor was a metal head but he listened to a lot more emo rock and screamo I believe it’s called and so it was a part of my childhood but hearing this song for the first time… was absolute chills. Wish I could turn back time so that I could listen to it for the first time all over again.

I first saw them live in 1987. The Master of Puppets album when they were part of the Monsters of Rock tour. I was also able to see them again when they toured for the And Justice For All album. Their music is great and fun to listen. Their live performance is masterpiece that brings real life to the songs, I hope you enjoy discovering for yourself.

The song is based on a film from 1971 called Johnny got his gun. In the music video it uses clips from the flim. Its essentially about a guy who gets blown up and he is mute with no arms or legs. He is basically stuck in purgatory.

That moment. At about 7m57s in to this video. THAT is what metal is all about. And its also the reason everyone who isn't into it thinks its just shouting and being angry. Metal is a cathartic way of letting out the thoughts and feelings that people have, but in a creative way. It's pure raw musical energy. The heavier stuff uses distorted growling singing styles to emphasise and build on that feeling, but its, in essence, that same thing your feeling in the song at that moment. If you approach any other metal band in the same mindset as you did at that point and take time to learn what the song is about either before, or right after reacting to a metal track, then you will get it, and see why its so popular. Awesome video. Awesome reaction. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 Not a Metallica song, but take a detour and listen to some Bloodywood. They are an Indian folk metal band, with a dose of rap, and with some real good subject matter and lyrics. May I suggest Dana Dan (anti rape culture song), or Gaddar ( anti corruption of politics) If you do, please put the closed captions on, as some of it is in their native tongue, but they put the English translation to it.
