Hello Debbie [TheQuestionQueens] ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me. Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience. About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners. Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory): " Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland. Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition. Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her. There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). About 12 people in the USA knew this band existed for years. It's not your fault. It's mainstream media that never gave them airplay on radio. I love Amy Lee, but Floor is on a level all alone at the top. She does it all from growling to opera and even Disney songs.

FYI: Nightwish started touring the US around 2003/04 for the first time. Outside of their home country finland, they had their first european tour (oceanborn) in 1999, then the wishmaster world tour (w/o US) one year later. Although they were becoming more and more popular around these times outside of finland, they were never a band that got tons of airplay on mainstream radio back then. Their songs just don't fit in this scheme too well in general because Tuomas doesn't write them with mainstream media in his mind. So here in europe, it was never only about whats played in the radio, but what you would find and listen to in a CD store at that time. Metal apparantly has always had a very much stronger following in other continents than in the US.

I've listened to a lot of rock growing up - but never heard anything like that! I was mesmerized. For the last minute and half, I could vaguely hear my wife yelling my name over my headphones, but I was too entranced to pause it. When I did, she thought I has seen a ghost...(see what i did there) and said "You HAVE to hear this". I’m coo-coo for CoCo Puffs! Nightwish Army North Texas division reporting for duty. Welcome to the wonderful world of Floor Jansen and Nightwish! Symphonic metal at its best. Don’t worry about having not heard of them. The vast majority of Americans have not. They are quite popular in many European, South American, and Asian countries. This was in northwestern Germany, at Wacken Open Air with around 82,000 fans. Floor is as good a vocalist as you will find anywhere. By the way this was song #13 of 15 in the set that night. Floor Jansen is called the Valkyrie Goddess of Metal and Empathy. Floor Jansen is a soprano, with a range of more than 4 octaves (Eb2 to F6). She can sing from classical to belting and raspy vocals like screaming and death growls. And she's also a voice coach and teacher to boot. Plus, huge vocal nerd 😉. Floor Jansen was the singer of the Dutch metal band After Forever from 1997 to early 2009. From 1999 she studied at the Rockacademie in Tilburg with classmates Jacqueline Govaert and Danny Vera, where she graduated in 2003. She studied musical theatre and a year of opera. In addition to her activities at After Forever, she gave singing lessons. She plays guitar, piano and flute. On May 5, 2010, she presented her new band ReVamp, which was disbanded in September 2016. From 1 October 2012 Jansen replaced Anette Olzon (Second singer of Nightwish after Tarja) as singer of Nightwish during the Imaginaerum World Tour (And she had to learn the set list in 48h). On October 9, 2013, it was announced that she would be the group's regular new front singer. In 2015, Nightwish released the album Endless Forms Most Beautiful with Jansen as lead singer. The organ pipes are fake and hide three keyboards. The song is written shortly after Pirates of the Caribbean and you can't miss it. Nightwish is one of the founding bands of symphonic metal. Evenescence and Nightwish both started about the same time, Evanescence being just a little bit older as they were founded 1995 while Nightwish was founded 1996. However by the time of the release of the first Evanescence album 2003 and their rise to success, Nightwish has already released four albums and had two international tours extending besides Europe to South America, Mexico and Canada.

Army members range from young children to Senior Citizens ( like myself ) who love Nightwish...the Royalty of Symphonic Metal! I discovered Nightwish 4 years ago, and I fell in love with their music immediately! I have CD's, DVD's, my Amazon Music and Spotify Accounts are mainly Nightwish's music. I grew up listening to all of the greats of rock n roll in the 1960's and Nightwish and the genius that is Tuomas Holopainen ( the keyboards player ) writes and composes most of the music....and of course band members have input too! Oh....there were over 80,000 people in attendance at this last concert of the music fest! And...these fans know the words by heart...that's how much they love Nightwish! At 65 years old, the only band I have ever learned almost every song is Boston. They used to be my favorite... now they are just a tiny bit below Nightwish! Plenty of people will give you suggested play lists. It really doesn't matter...in 4 years I have yet to hear a song that isn't fabulous! Oh...Nightwish Army, Texas Regiment, Austin, Texas Brigade Sergeant at Arms. ( at 6'6" and an old Offensive Lineman... I gave myself the position! 😂😂😂 )!

These early performances are fun, because at this point Floor had only been in the band for a few months (having been asked to replace the previous singer MID-TOUR). Floor was still in the process of smoothing and adapting her interpretations of the whole set list, so some of the recordings vary, yet the differences don't detract from how much she pours into them and how great the results are.

I was blown away listening to and watching "The Poet and the Pendulum" live from Wembley 2018 and I have been down the Nightwish rabbit hole ever since soaking up everything from the wonderful Tarja and Annette eras and now the incomparable Floor. Hello Debbie and from me also a very welcome to Nightwish! You just met this phenomenal band and there is a story behind this song. At that time NW was on a World Tour which started in 2012. Midway this tour and midway their US leg the band parted with their 2nd singer. They phoned Floor, who was at her sister's wedding while being in the last stadium of recovering from a severe burnout, asking her if she could help them out for the rest of the tour. She said yes! and had 48 hrs (to go to the States) and learn the complete setlist!! And she nailed it! She knew the band because she met them, with her former band After Forever, at various festivals in Europe. She also knew the song Ghost Love Score and was always freewheeling with the end of the song. When she felt secure enough to belt the end of the song during rehearsels the guys said "Go for it" and that is what she did at Wacken. It was the first time for Floor to perform in front of such a huge audience and also as the new leadsinger and most of the crowd didn't know her but she had them in the palm of her hands in seconds. In Oct 2013 she became the official new leadsinger. My favorite of the Wacken concert is "Song of Myself" so......haha. You'll find the right link in the list of Gabriel Bardac, the amazing frontman of the NW Army! Enjoy the ride and greetings from The Netherlands! Btw.. Floor has her own YT channel and did herself a reaction video of this song as it had become a worldwide massive hit. Worth checking out! Oh and those pipes around the keyboards is a prop. It is not an organ. Those pipes are a tribute to the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius, whose monument (600 metal pipes) stands in Helsinki.
