Tug of War, no matter how one interprets it, is a masterpiece. It speaks volumes now, 40 years later. Too bad it has been drowned out by so much musical tripe that has occurred. Remember this was in the wake of John Lennon's death, and surely that affected Paul's song writing content. it can be about both the Beatles and the World, or your own situation/relationships. Like life is one big God Damned Tug of War. We sure are being forced to march to the beat of a different drum today, and not all of it is good. Anything George Martin touched turned into a classic, and McCartney knew that. Spooky at the end how Linda disappears FIRST, then Paul. At the time no one knew Linda would pass away in 1998 and leave Paul behind, still with us and touring today. I miss Linda so much, she was always by his side, in the band or just with him. She always seemed like such a nice lady, like that next door neighbor you always liked.

As a person and an artist. I feel the same way! I’ve loved him since the beginning on the Ed Sullivan show and I’m still in awe of his work. Really so cool to see another human being’s reaction to this song. I remember hearing this for the first time upon its release forty years ago?? There was a real sense of melancholy upon hearing this tune because it was only a scant two years since Lennon’s death and McCartney hadn’t really addressed that void yet. Love your comments as far as the lineage with George Martin and the tug of war being a metaphor for the Beatles themselves.

Stephen my man, this is a slick pick for Harri. Paul will be in Knoxville Tennessee on 5/31 at Thompson Boling. This place is electrified anticipating Paul's arrival. I have a reference book. Paul says about Tug of war but he was thinking of John all the while he was creating the song as with Somebody who cares..:that is on the same album. It is about the Tug of War in personal relationships including ex colleagues that end up as a Tug of war including international politics in these generalities. But John was in.the back of his mind the whole time...

Another good song to look at from this album is the song, Wanderlust, which George Martin called Paul's best vocal performance. Specifically the version from the Tug of War album, not the Give My Regards to Broadstreet version. In fact you could play almost any song from this album.

I think it's about Paul and John trying to compete with each other within.the Beatles and their creative tensions within the band. . Yes. And Paul having to stand his own ground to keep things together. It is the first track heard on the album I think it's an apology of sorts to John. Later on in the album we get the full on John tribute Here Today which would have been too much for the Listener on Track 1. He is building up to that one in.my opinion. Yes. It's like an old boys get together in.the wake of John's death. Ringo also plays on the next track up Take it Away. This album is 40 years old this month

I agree with Harri & Q, this song is clearly about the persistent tension behind the creative dynamic shared by him and John. And to me, that's what makes it an interesting song. Take that meaning away, and it's rather pedestrian, not one of Paul's best. But the thing is, you cannot really take that meaning away--which makes this a compelling, reaction-worthy track. Thanks, fellas.

The song its a masterpiece! ill make Rolling Stone Magazine words to review it mine, they said that Tug of war is Paul McCartney' Imagine! The song is about life and thats a genius comparing life to a Tug of war, in life you try to outscore each other but at the same time you cant let go! Not every Paul song is about the Beatles thank God! And you have your Lennon tribute in Here today in the same album! For me this song is another Pipes of peace like song, being Pipes of peace song more direct and pop, and Tug of war more poetic!

I'm always surprised how many people don't get the Beatles' references in this, and in the whole album. It is the first release after John was killed. I see "we will be dancing to the beat played on a different drum" as a meaning someday the Beatles' music will all fade away. Other lines from the album: "Sole survivor, carrying the load, switches on his radio. Take it away. I want to hear you play 'til the night is gone.", "If I said I really knew you well, what would your answer be? If you were here today. Well knowing you, you'd probably laugh and say that we were worlds apart.", "It wasn't always such a pretty sight. We used to fight like cats and dogs.", "Your heart just wasn't in it anymore.", "Light out Wanderlust, help us to be free. Take us from the dark, out where we can see. Captain's out to make his mark, this one's not for me.", "You can dress me up as a soldier, but I wouldn't know what for. I was the one who told you he loved you, don't want to go to another war." Yeah, it's the bigger picture too. That's what Paul does.

From an article I read once, this was the first album after he had been arrested and held in Japan for pot possession and he was re-evaluating his life and his work. He decided he wanted to achieve more with this album musically so he brought in George Martin and also he wanted the album to be more socially relevant and then John was killed. This is the album that includes the song ''Here Today''. Although I am not discounting that "Tug of War" was about the Beatles, if you put this song in the context of the whole album, this song is about the way humans behave globally.

In Vedic Astrology, all the planets are reincarnations of Vishnu and Saturn rising in Paul McCartney's chart, is a turtle which Vishnu transforms himself into, to hold the mountain on his back with the rope twirled round the mountain, one side pull by the demons and the other side pulled by the demi gods. So here you get to see an ancient parable being applied in real life in a person's chart (whether in a good or bad way depends on a person's chart ).
