That is true and funny,,,,,When Peter Gabriel left Genesis , the group were searching for a new lead singer. They even try Paul Rodgers , nobody seem to fit in that was when Mike Rutherford said hey Phil why not you. You are a great singer and are our back vocal and some lead over a few old musics. Phil answered was,,,Mike I don't know , I'm too ugly to be in front singing...Lol. Mike said ,,,is OK you will be singing playing drums and we up front. After they did a Trick of the tail with Phil as a lead singer while playing drums. Saw that concert and was great, with time he felt more at easy and start singing without the drums . Sure he still would go and play in some songs together with Chester Thompson.

Just so you know you got it exactly right. Not many people outside that era as in older people like me that heard this at its origin usually get the story right. You got it though he was literally going through a bad divorce and that’s what this song was about and that’s why it hit soooo damn hard then now and forever because his passion shines through his voice and performance it echos heartbreak anger resentment betrayal and that’s why this song has and will always be perceived so powerfully by all who hear or see it performed forever. I loved your reaction and bravo for being so keen and smart. This song still gives me goosebumps after all these years! Caio!

What I like about this young lady’s review is she allows us & herself to hear the whole song before she gives her insights instead of stopping the song frequently to interject her thoughts on her audience, like so many other reviewers do!
@paulatredies9242

I think due to copyright things, they have to stop it every so often so their reaction stays up. I've been seeing more do that and they said that is why.

My thoughts exactly Daryl. I loved the fact she did not stop the song to interject. Her thoughts and feelings about the song are reflected in her reaction. Awesome to see a younger generations appreciate an iconic song.

As at least one other person has said, many times the reviewer *MUST* stop the video and talk, because if you play the whole thing through without interruption or comment then that is in breach of Copyright. If you are 'reviewing' and making a commentary on a song or making your criticism of the performance, then that is allowed under Copyright law as "fair use". If you don't do that, quite often their video is taken down off KZbin by the Copyright owner. (but not always - depends on the artist, the label, their management etc.)

Phil wrote this after his messy divorce. He said the lyrics are nonsensical. They were just the words that poured out of him and fit the feeling he was after but they shouldn’t be analyzed because there’s nothing more behind them.

partly, he also witnessed what he thought was a drug related execution. He said it was from a distance and didn't know the details but part of the song was what he imagined. He said he kept quiet about it for years out of fear of retribution.
@jtpencils
@jtpencils 4 жыл бұрын
Danny Herron I agree. Listening to it in this video, it almost sounds like a “revenge” song. The scenario in my minds eye is that Collins viewed or experienced something in his youth where someone he knew/loved was hurt (murdered?) by someone foul. He’d never forget it. Years later he sees that person in dire need of helping (drowning? Shot?) and refuses to do so. Payback without doing a thing. At least that’s how I “read” the song here. Made me reevaluate the song for sure, and I’ve heard it hundreds of times. The REACTION was perfect at the drum solo... I was waiting to see that alone!
@DarrenBaileyActor
@DarrenBaileyActor 4 жыл бұрын
Jim Taylor I implore you to actually watch the videos where he’s repeatedly dispelled the rumors. It’s cool that’s the story that pops up for you, but it’s literally just about being upset at his divorce. Look up his interview on Jimmy Fallon or articles published. I can’t do the work for you, but he’s repeatedly said any rumors about seeing some dark shit go down or not helping someone who’s drowning aren’t based on anything. It’s all nonsensical metaphor.
@DarrenBaileyActor
@DarrenBaileyActor 4 жыл бұрын
Danny Herron I’m a Phil and Genesis fanatic. I’ve never heard of this. Please look up the Snopes article about the song’s origins. I’m not understanding why it’s so hard for people to literally look up numerous videos on this same website where he thoroughly dismisses all literal interpretations of the song. He was upset at his wife leaving. These are the first words that poured out of him. That’s it.

It's about his divorce from his first wife...she initiated the divorce and he was not happy about it at all...he talked about it for many years afterwards...even after he found someone else and they eventually married...true story...in the divorce he didn't want to give the house to his ex...so he put it in their kids names and she lived there with them...years later when they were grown...they wanted to give the house to their mother and he...apparently still angry, years and two wives later, went to court to stop them...he lost, again....

Loved your reaction to this one! All I can think about when I hear it is Buster Douglas the night he knocked out Mike Tyson. He was mocked by many as an unworthy opponent and people were betting on whether or not he would get through the first round. He lost his mother only weeks before the bout. He had all of this emotion and focus and achieved one of the greatest upsets in sports history. Buster Douglas walked to the ring that night with In The Air Tonight playing in the arena. It still gives me chills.

@@vernhoke7730 Weird things like that always freak me out. Like when Col. Robert E. Lee and Lt. J.E.B. Stewart of the United States Marines captured John Brown at Harpers Ferry in 1859, and later when Brown was hanged for attempting to start a slave revolt, John Wilkes Booth was there watching...in a Richmond, Virginia Militia uniform that was loaned to him to attend the event. Like, I used to move around a lot. And I started looking around at new places I had never been and wondering, "Will this town be my home someday?" And sure as heck many times I end up in a location that I should have had no clue I would end up living in. Like Deja Vue only in reverse...a precognition. Only just a feeling.

Phil is a superb drummer and vocalist. It's such as shame he is mostly remembered for hid Disney stuff these days. But, back in the 70's and 80's, he worked his arse off. Not just as the drummer for Genesis, but also in jazz / rock fusion band called Brand X, and his solo stuff too. Over the years he collaborated with so many other musicians too. That drum sound you hear on this song is called gated reverb, and was actually discovered by Phil and Peter Gabriel when they were jamming together with a couple of sound engineers in a studio. And that became the sound of the 80!s, copied by so many. In fact, many rappers have sampled this song. It's not hard to see why. Filled with darkness and menace. The song is basically about his wife having an affair with a painter and decorator, and the breakdown of his marriage. Phil sometimes sang the song with a tin of paint and a paint brush beside him.
