This is hard to watch for me. Those of us who saw the tour can never really explain the experience. Keep in mind, everyone in that crowd knew every word of the album "The Wall." They understood the context of the song and what to expect. But they did not. This performance live was (and still is beyond compare). The lighting effect simply do not come through on video, they don't. The stadium exploded in light coming at you from all directions in the pitch darkness. That reflector was the size of a three bedroom house. Towards the end when if opened up the crowd audibly gasped, you could hear it over the music which was ear shatteringly loud. I have attended 300 rock shows and the crescendo for this song (loudness) was hypnotic and has no equal in rock history. There are two guitar solos, the first one is amazing, but the second one is way beyond most rock solos that often devolve into rock guitar noodling, or duet guitar hammering. There is nothing like a jazz-like exposition and free-form mucking about, the second solo is constructed with care, beauty, simplicity, gut-wrenching rock motifs done so well that no one has ever come close to this since. Wagner himself would have stood and cheered in appreciation of this transformation of stage music into pure art, utterly transcendent.

In 1994 I went to see Pink Floyd pulse tour when I lived in Chicago at soldier field. My wife at the time surprised me with 2 tickets to my favorite band of all time. She got the tickets for $75 for 2. When we got to the concert someone outside asked me if I wanted to sell my tickets for $1200 cash.. and I told him no thanks, he said why?.. I’m giving you a lot of money here.. I said because tonight I get to see a God like play the guitar… and I walked away. In the concert at this song and the solo part it started to drizzle rain so softly that it became part of the music, as if God was feeling it to… after the concert we went out to eat and I told my wife we should spend the night here in downtown , so we got a great room even though we lived 45 minutes from the concert. So 9 months later my beautiful daughter was born named Sydney she’s going to turn 30 next year… thanks David for that great solo it did the trick. I will never ever forget that night. Please do same concert of High Hopes… it will blow you away… thanks. FYI I’ve seen them 3 times including the Wall tour.

This song in particular was one of the highpoints of my life, and for the rest of the decade, I could give myself goosebumps at will by thinking of this song. That's where the lasers were aimed and it was where most of the "smoke" seemed to gather from below, Hahaha! We took our time leaving. It seemed we had to practice walking. We sat on our car hood and watched the crowd come out. Do you remember the beginning of "Time"? The 2nd drummer was bouncing on the stage while hitting all the chimes and what nots. Amazing!

I was there , it was a disco ball that opened up at the end. That whole show was unbelievable. I still can't believe what I saw that day. There wasn't a dry eye in the audience. The whole show was magical. The band is out of this world. I believe the Lord had everything to with this. There is no way man made this . Yeah that was a big crowd there in Earls Court in London. They sold that same venue out 15 nights in a row!! On another note not only is a Pink Floyd concert a stunning visual but they put speakers on the stage behind the audience on both sides of the audience and above the audience!! They pump 233,000 watts of power through their sound system and lighting for their shows but only turn up the volume a little over halfway for perfect sound with zero distortion! They basically create a giant set of perfect headphones for the audience!!!! I've seen about 100 concerts in my life from ACDC to led Zeppelin and everyone in between you could think of alphabetically!! I've seen Pink Floyd four times in three different decades and those were the four best concerts I've ever seen in my life!! Pink Floyd puts on an extraordinary show every time and as many people say it's not just a show or a gig it's an experience you'll never forget!!!!!

“Comfortably Numb” is a dialogue between two characters from The Wall, Pink and the Doctor, which Waters has said was inspired by two incidents. The first came when, as a child, he had a fever which induced a sensation of dissociation and distance; the second came prior to a Floyd gig in the 1970s, when a doctor injected Waters, who had stomach cramps, so that he could get through the show. He later told Mojo magazine that he was “rendered almost insensible”. Hence the lyric: “There is no pain, you are receding.” FT

Pink Floyd was responsible for some of the greatest background of our teenage years. They made our "highs" reach new heights and made our lows not quite so lonely. Everyone of this generation can attach at least one Pink Floyd song to a poignant moment in their youth, which is what makes them endure over time. Many of us to this day are brought to tears at the chorus of Wish you were here. If you have not done a reaction to it, you will love it. I "think" it was to represent a lotus blossom. Pink Floyd was not only ahead of their time, they are timeless. Masters of stage and studio. The inspiration for this song was a time when one of the band members (Roger Waters) unknowingly had hepatitis and got sick on tour. A local doctor diagnosed it as a stomach bug and gave him a sedative. By the time he went on stage he was so out of it his hands felt numb and swollen like 2 balloons, also a reference to how he felt once as a child with a 105F fever. He could barely play but the crowd cheered anyway so he was Comfortably Numb. I was around when these albums were released, long before this concert. I always love seeing the expression on the faces of those hearing them for the first time. Pink Floyd sounds better live than many bands do in the studio. But what Pink Floyd does in the studio is nothing short of magic. Might I suggest the studio version of Shine on You Crazy Diamond, parts 1-5 and 6-9. It was written as a tribute to Syd Barret, one of the founding band members that left the band due to a losing battle with drugs and schizophrenia. One of my favorite Pink Floyd songs is The Great Gig in the Sky (studio version with Clare Torry please). I guarantee you've never heard anything like it. Though ideally you should react to it as part of side 1 of Dark Side of the Moon. Possibly the greatest album of all time and meant to be listened to in 1 sitting. Well, 2 since in the day we'd have to get up to flip the vinyl... 😁

Great to see your appreciation for this performance!!! I was fortunate to see Pink Floyd on this Pulse tour at The Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas in 1994. Had 18th row seats on the floor and it was an experience of a lifetime!! The electronic keyboards (synthesizers) started in the early 70s with progressive rock bands such as Yes, Emerson Lake and Palmer, and subsequently Genesis. Many bands have had amazing light shows, but none better than Pink Floyd. I highly recommend "High Hopes" and "Run Like Hell" from this same Pulse concert!!!

The thing above the crowd was a disco [sucks!] ball reflecting light around the stadium. It later opened up to reveal a diamond (check out "Shine On You Crazy Diamond") which was a tribute to Syd Barrett, one of the founding members of Pink Floyd. Electronics in rock existed long before this concert, and had its heyday in the 1960s to 1970s. Groups were experimenting with what could be done with the electric guitar (a relatively new "invention" compliments of Les Paul) and also with the Moog synthesizer which came along and elevated what bands had already been doing with Hammond organs and similar instruments. The Beatles, The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, and a slew of others (including Pink Floyd) were blowing up speakers and distorting amplifiers in the pursuit of new sounds. By the time the '80s rolled around -- and definitely the '90s when the Pulse concert was performed/recorded -- electronic music had pretty much been explored and perfected with nothing new left to discover -- with the exception of auto-tune... which has become the abomination and downward death spiral of all the good music that us old timers took for granted for three decades. On a side note, Pink Floyd's 'Dark Side of the Moon' album has been used as the de-facto standard to test (and compare) new recording standards as they emerged and evolved; with the original 16-track recordings (highly advanced in its day) remastered to vinyl records, cassette tape, CD and DVD, and now to lossless digital formats like FLAC. Pink Floyd continues to transcend time and space!

I read the mirror ball was in the form of an Orchid symbolizing rebirth by opening. I heard Gilmore say in an interview once he didn't know what it felt like in the audience during that song, but the band playing behind him was so full, he felt he could lean back into it. I wasn't at this show, but saw this tour in Detroit. I can't explain how incredible it was. This wasn't even the final song, Run Like Hell was. Thank God for KZbin, I can relive the whole anytime I desire.

I was lucky enough to see Pink Floyd live on this very tour in May of 1994 in the old Foxboro Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts (the video shown is at the end of the tour in October of that year in Earl's Court, London). I can honestly say that it was an experience that I will never forget. I have seen quite a few concerts, but nothing ever came close to this experience. It was so surreal, as if time was suspended (no hyperbole). IMHO, Pink Floyd is at their best performing live. I would recommend watching other songs from this concert. Pink Floyd was always ahead of their time. Their music was indeed a level above. They crafted some of the best music. In 1972 they released an album called Dark Side of the Moon. It landed on Billboard's top 100 and stayed there for over 900 weeks. Listening to Pink Floyd is an experience. Watching them live as in this video is something you will always remember because it is so precise and beautiful and creative. Another band you may like to check into is Rush. They are in the same realm as Pink Floyd in that they are pure. musicians that make music on a whole different level. For just an outstanding music delight is by a man names Teddy Swims. He is new. He had a huge song last spring called Loose Control. Excellent song.

You have to remember that Comforably Numb is just a chapter in the book The Wall. It is a chapter in the middle of the book. The Wall is a story about Pink and his life. I saw the original concert on 27 Feb 80 in the Nassau Coliseum, David doing his solo on top of the Wall. The greatest show on Earth.

Re the light show etc. I saw them in Sydney in 1988 and it was no less brilliant than what you just saw. Mind blowing is the only words I can use to describe that concert. Pink Floyd were the ultimate in composition, both lyrics and melody and their concerts were unmatched. I love love love them.

What you witnessed, in my opinion, was the greatest performance of the greatest solo ever written. Bar none. Pink Floyd has always been at the forefront, both sonically and visually, of any rock band. I'm older now, 69, and PF still moves me.

I don't believe people when they say they have never heard of Pink Floyd or listened to their music. Pink Floyd have been ahead of their time all the way back to the mid 1960s. They are the gold standard of rock music. No band has ever topped them. They would sell out Arenas 4 nights in a row. 40 to 70 thousand people each night. I think the Earl's court shows were comprised of 14 or so shows and all were sold out before the first show. The glass ball had thousand of facets and the lights bounced in all directions you could see it moving across the walls. The leaves opening up and what it meant I don't really know but the top and bottom would open up all the way.

You'll also be pleased to know that the Bass player here, Guy Pratt, is an Aussie who replaced Roger Waters for many years in Pink Floyd. 🙂 "Sorrow" from this concert is also wonderful, as is "On the Turning Away" ... the whole thing is incredible really. Cheers from Canberra.

It starts out as a glittering disco-ball over the crowd that turns into an opened flower at the end of the song. At the end when the lights go out, one light remains lit inside of the flower - a sparking diamond in the darkness. It's a tribute to Syd Barret, a former member of the band who had to quit because of mental-health problems. The song "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" was written in honor of Syd, and they honored him again in this concert with the diamond inside of the flower shining on after all the other lights were out.

Sorrow from pulse concert is just as good! They spent 98 million on the light show out of a 260 million total. They care more about their music and your visual experience than you seeing them out front. Great Reaction

Others may have said it, but it's worth repeating. This Pink Floyd song was much later than their first works of genius (this song is from "The Wall" album). Their light shows were always as incredible as their soundscapes - I saw them live in 1976. Your journey of exploration of music is incomplete until you have listened to the whole album "Dark Side of the Moon" from start to finish. It remains one of THE highest selling albums of all time, for a reason. It is musical and lyrical genius manifest, and it's themes are timeless and apply to any generation. To quote Roger Waters on Dark Side's themes "It has some kind of universal appeal in that it confronts a number of major psychological and emotional concerns". And yes, high quality was always their hallmark, in fact then and to this day, Dark Side of the Moon is used by audiophiles to test high end sound systems due to the clarity, dynamic range and brilliance of the engineering. Do the studio album first, but the entire Dark Side album's tracks are in the PULSE Restored and Re Edited videos. Named in homage to two older black blues musicians from North Carolina, USA, “Pink” Anderson, and “Floyd” Council, the band was attracted by their raw, bluesy sound. No other band like them to compare to, they are “the cerebral band of rock”.

Floyd live is so much more than a concert. It is a spiritual experience. They are the perfect transducers. They take the raw creative energy of the universe, translate it perfectly into music then directly in your ears and down into your soul. To this day, one of the most memorable experiences of my entire life. I have seen them twice. It was a light show.
