Primus has been called "The Band That Never Should've Been". They originally just started out as a joke (kinda like Green Jelly). They were a hit though, and are still going. If you ever hear someone say "Primus sucks", then interpret the opposite of the literal translation. That's what all us fans say. Les Claypool auditioned for Metallica after Cliff Burton's death, but they didn't care for his suggestion of the Aisley Brothers to much. Lol If you'd like to check out more by them I recommend Too Many Puppies, Frizzle Fry, Tommy the Cat, Southbound Pachyderm, American Life, Those Damned Blue-Collared Tweekers, and Sgt. Baker. Great reaction, Jay. Would love to see another.

I remember seeing Primus open up for Rush in '91 on the Rush "Roll the Bones" tour. I was there for Rush and it would take a couple of years for me to warm up to Primus. Les Claypool had auditioned to play bass for Metallica and while they thought he was incredible, he was way outside their lane. The guitarist in Primus is a student of Joe Satriani if I am not mistaken. Very well taught. Primus finally sold me in 92 or 93 with the album Pork Soda. Jerry was a Racecar Driver is not a song I would start with. I would try Tommy the Cat, My Nme is Mud, Winona's Big Brown Beaver. A lot of great musicianship.

Awesome. I saw Primus open for RUSH in Dallas(counterparts). I remember getting there early and I actually thought 'man this band sucks'. I had never heard of Primus. Few years later wife got me Pork Soda for christmas. Fell in love. Primus is my third favorite band. (RUSH, YES, Primus).

It's a 2-year waiting list to get a custom bass from Carl Thompson. Les is a next level bass player like Geddy. I don't always appreciate Primus as sometimes it's a little too weird even for me. I do dig Les Claypool's frog brigade, and Oysterhead which is les, Stewart Copeland from the police, and the guitarist from Phish, Trey Anastasio(?).

Like everyone else has said Les Claypool is a wizard on the slap bass. What makes Primus unique is how the bass is used. Most modern rock bands use the bass as a accompaniment to the percussion or rhythm guitar. kind of like adding depth and range to the song. With Primus, Les uses the bass to lead the arrangement, much like a lead guitar. If you watch him play, his hands never stop moving. Flea from the Red Hot Chilli Peppers is in very much than vein. Yes, all Primus' song lyrics are tongue in cheek humor. but their musicianship is off the charts.

@MichaelSkelton3 жыл бұрын
1. The bassist plays a 6 string bass (uncommon because most rock bass players play 4 string bass). The bass he plays has two extra strings with higher register notes, so he can make that unique sound. 2. The drummer is sick; the part in the chorus after he says "GO!" the drummer is using two kick pedals on the bass drum (he may actually have two bass drums) so he can produce almost a drum roll effect on the bass drums ("ba-ba-ba")
