That's Malcolm X opening the track with knowledge. "Here come the drums!" Way to watch some old school consciousness! PE led the way in social commentary while still banging!
@jamesharrington89903 жыл бұрын
Very genuine reaction and your instinctual thoughts are primo young’n. Our generation that was young when this shit came out went back and got on the rock, funk, soul, and jazz that groups like PE gathered and distilled into their sound. And we’d always crack up when we found out that some ill sample on a hip-hop record was from some song that our folks used to listen to on the hi-fi that we would diss but was actually dynamite. Pick all your favorite songs from 90s and go look up the samples that were used on the beat. You’ll find a pile of great American music behind all these records.

This was in our consciousness during the Rodney King Riots. I was a student at Berkeley and marched with several thousands onto the highway and several hundreds onto the Bay Bridge. Sh*t was real then. The beat was fire. I have a great memory of a visting student from NY that pulled this out of my catalogue and showed me just how much groove was there. Public Enemy was the top group at the time and always spoke the truth without lacing it with gang stories. He was more relatable. Not that N.W.A. wasn't just as righteous on the West Coast. Legends back then culminating in Tupac and Biggie. Thank you for reacting to PE!

I had this tape when it came out! I also ordered the "Enemy" necklace from the inside cover for $12 haha. I am now 46 and this is one of the best beats ever made!

Edutainment is what we called it back in the day. PE was huge until the privately owned prison lobbyists started paying record companies to promote the criminal element and away from the socially conscious rappers..
