I was a young teenager at the time, and one of the 73,000,000 Americans (out of a total population of around 190,000,000 at the time) who eagerly watched this historic performance on Ed Sullivan. Another interesting statistic was 60 % of all American televisions were tuned into Ed Sullivan during this performance. The Beatles were new and revolutionary at that time, and went on to have a profound influence on rock music, hair styles, clothing, and culture in general. Great choice of song and performance.

Thank you so much for doing this journey of discovery! It is so fun to follow you. It truly is hard to describe how central the Beatles were to everything, sort of like a fun Mount Rushmore or White Cliffs of Dover. They were just THERE. And they were ever-changing and so never felt old. There was a period of time, maybe the late 70's through 80's, when Beatles songs were never played on Oldies channels because it was unbearable to think of them being in the past. But that break made it totally wonderful to hear them all again and even now!

Hi Princess. I love your reaction videos. I was seven years old when The Beatles first came to the U.S. I am now 67 and still love them and their music. I listen to Beatles music every day of my life. They were really a gift from God. They have brought so much love and happiness to the world. No other band has done that. Love to you too Princess.❤

They were babies here, so adorable! Their career could be divided in fases, this would be their “boy band” fase, because they were popular and made mostly pop music, but keep in mind at the time the concept of boy band didn’t exist, also they chose each other they weren’t assembled by someone else. Little fan fact at the time of this performance George was 19, Paul was 20 and Ringo and John were like 22, they had played with each other for a few years in clubs in Liverpool and Hamburg before becoming popular. When Paul met John he was 15 and John had already formed a band called “the quarrymen” with his school mates, Paul joined shortly after he watched them perform at a church party and tried to convince John to let his friend George join the band, to which John was hesitant at first because he was and looked really young and tiny, and John wanted the band to look cool and badass, but Paul had George auditioning for John on a bus, where he played “Raunchy” on guitar, the rest is history. The other band members soon left and the three remaining were sometimes playing gigs going by the names of “Johnny and the moondogs” and sometimes “the Japage 3” which stands for John, Paul and George lol, before leaving for Hamburg. Ringo was playing drums for another band called “Rori and the hurricane” or something and met the gang in Hamburg where he finally joined them to replace their drummer Pete Best, who according to their producer sucked. George said the boys were scared of Ringo at first because he used to dress as a Teddy boy, but he noticed Ringo watching them perform and kept requesting sad songs, so he knew he was a softie. Paul and George became friends first because they took the same bus to school, they bonded over music and they even built a guitar together because they couldn’t afford to buy one, when they went clubbing Paul had to paint on George’s face a fake moustache to make him look older. This was from an interview Paul did, I love this backstory.

THis is not just a huge moment in Rock and Roll history. It's also major television history, one of the largest audiences of all time. And it was a moment in cultural history. The Beatles really changed the world, it's not a joke.

Try , Dear Prudence it’s so eerily beautiful and mysterious, one of their best songs and a very unusual drum speed makes it so incredibly unique and generation’s ahead of its time for 1968, the guitar is hypnotic and even though it’s Johns masterpiece Paul plays drums, bass and piano, probably his best moment as a Beatle

This song was their first big hit in the US. I was 12 years old when when this happened. I can't impress upon you how big a day this was. Other commenters here have said similar things. All day long me and my friends talked about them being on the Ed Sullivan show that evening and seeing them for the first time....live at 8pm on the US East coast. It was the start of an amazing time musically to be a teenager.

By the end of 1963 The Beatles had conquered Great Britain, France and Germany. On Feb 1, 1964, I Want to Hold Your Hand hit #1 on the American radio charts, 8 days before the Beatles first performed live on Americas top Sunday Night TV program, The Ed Sullivan Show. 73 million Americans tuned in. I was nearly 5 years old and watched the Beatles (with my 2 hysterical older sisters and unimpressed father and older brother, my Mom was too exhausted to care :-) It is impossible to overstate the impact I Want to Hold Your Hand had on the American public.(not to mention Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys) Over the next few months, the culture of the entire free world changed forever, and I Want To Hold Your Hand was the flashpoint. Take care RNB

For Americans, this was such a pop culture earthquake that we're still experiencing the aftershocks 60 years later. The Ed Sullivan Show was a massive nationally televised variety show that had influence over popular culture much like its U.K. contemporary Sunday Night At The London Palladium combined with the Royal Variety Show did. Pop and rock stars (such as Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, the Rolling Stones, and so many more) as well as comedians, Broadway shows, Jim Henson's Muppets and many other acts all made their careers from appearing on the Ed Sullivan Show. Also, this performance in February of 1964 was one of the first things to help our country heal from the tragic assassination of President John F. Kennedy the previous November, mere months earlier. Virtually every radio act for the next two decades trace this appearance on Ed Sullivan as the reason they wanted to become professional musicians. This was a MASSIVE cultural touchstone event.

Awesome. Though I wasn’t alive I do know that clip you just watched of them on ed Sullivan in February 1964 pretty much changed not just music but the world and popular culture forever. Around the world every young guy wanted to be them or like them and every young g girl loved them. It inspired a generation of teens to pick up an instrument and do what they did. Suddenly the youth of the world were running things in the arts and pop culture unlike before. This was viewed by over half the population of America when it first aired. It’s said that the crime rate was down 50 percent for 10 minutes during their 5 song performance because even the criminals stopped to watch their performance on tv.

I was born in 1964 and introduced to The Beatles by my parents long before I could walk or talk. They told me I just reacted so delightedly to them so they played them for me. By 2 or so I can remember listening to them all the time. By 4 I had my own little record player and wore their Beatles records out. I used to feel guilty sometimes for waking them up to play because I thought they were inside the record player. I can't remember a time when The Beatles weren't a huge part of my life. Now, at 60 they still make me as happy as they did just about 60 years ago. They were magical. I loved them all but Paul will always be my favorite. I love seeing young people like you discover their magic. Don't forget to review their solo work. The amount of wonderful music Paul has created and continues to create at 82 is as amazing as it is delightfully genius.

75 millions Americans tuned in to watch them that night/9th Feb 1964. That was just under half the population at the time. A record that stood for many years. Not all Americans had TVs in those days either. The Beatles blew everyone away with this new sound, strange mop top hairdo's, collarless suits and great sense of humour. It was as if aliens had landed - they were so different from anything Americans had seen or heard before. That night changed everything. Many future stars watched it as kids and took up the guitar the next day, the Beatles had ignited their dreams. But far more important was their joyful effect on a grieving nation. Only 4 months before, President John F Kennedy was assassinated. The Beatles brought joy back by simply being themselves and singing their songs. Ps - In early April 1964 they set a record that has never been equaled, even 60 years later: In the US charts their songs were number 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, with 7 other songs in the top 100. Not bad for 4 young blokes from Liverpool.

Princess, you should check out some live video from their Washington D.C. Armory performance, which happened a couple days after the Ed Sullivan Show, in 1964! It is a crazy performance because The Beatles were surrounded by audience on all sides and they were required to move their equipment around to face a different direction, in between songs! Check out "I Saw Her Standing There", which is at the 7:00 minute mark on the link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ipLVd2SVhK6kg8k // This is the entire performance. You can see how crazy it was; they were having sound problems on the first song and George had to find a working microphone. Also, the fans were throwing jellybeans onto the stage, because one of them mentioned they like "jelly babies", in an article.

You are witnessing true authentic history here, not just another band. They were the first band to play stadiums. The Beatles held the top 5 spots on the USA Billboard Hot 100 in April 1964. This has NOT been repeated since. Only the Beatles. this is the song that kicked down the damned door and changed everything. Yet unknowing people, mostly younger, people dismiss it as Boy Band tripe, out of context with the times that this happened in history. they don;t get it. the long hair and loud guitar and drums music was outrageous to the adult population. Guys wore short hair back then, the Beatles were accused looking like "girls" and the whole bit. It was a serious revolution that changed everything. All because this one song broke through. the Beatles knew exactly what they were doing to break into the USA market...lovey dovey songs was what was popular. Paul and John often used to say "let's write a rolls royce" or "let's write a swimming pool" referring to their next song they would write. Sophisticated rock music didn't just happen overnight for Christ's sake. The Beatles kicked the damned door down for everyone else that came afterward and changed everything and kept changing and leading the way themselves for about 7 years. But there was years of evolution to this point that many pay no attention to starting in 1956. they were NOT just another overnight success. There were no real good sound systems or technology back then, they couldn't even hear themselves over the screaming. Boy Band my ass, they were THE band back then.

This was their first #1 in America. They had taken the UK, Germany, Sweden, France and Norway during 1963, then they came across the pond just a couple months after Kennedy was assassinated and cheered up the whole world. They all feel that by this point, their musicianship was starting to go downhill. They couldn't hear themselves play, and for a couple years, it didn't matter if they played well, the screaming covering their flubs. They stopped touring in 1966 so they could get back to being Evante guard artists and musicians. In 1964, their first album, recorded in 1 day (14 hours) had 14 song on it. ALL 14 were on the top 40 and the top 5 on the charts were all Beatles hits rotating week to week. No other artists in history have done anything like that, although the Beastie Boys in 1986 were close. They had the FIRST rap album to go platinum in history, and it was and is the biggest selling rap album of all time. (although they got better as they aged.).

This Is the Most Important Moment in the History of Popular Music. The Beatles appearing on the Ed Sullivan Show on February 9, 1964. Over 79 million Americans watched this. ( I did while in 7th grade with my brother and parents) First, they were NOT a "Boy Band" that only sang, like the 1950s Rock Stars that had professional musicians playing and professional song writers. They Were the First Rock Group to Play LIVE on TV and write their own songs.....Also, they were smart, funny and Opinionated and Not afraid to Express their Opinions to the Press or in their music. After this performance, the fashions, social expression, and Culture would Never be the Same, And for Certain, the Rock Music would not........ John, Paul, George and Ringo....

This record was so popular that Capitol Records had to hire 3 of their rivals to help them press disks. It took 4 record companies working full time to meet the demand. Something that absolutely horrified the Beatles was that people used to bring relatives and friends who were sick and dying or had serious birth defects to their concerts in the hopes that they would be cured. The theory, I think, was that the Beatles music was so extraordinary that it must be coming directly from God. The Beatles were horrified by this since they knew that they had no such power. Thanks for not giving in to the people who only request late Beatles songs.
