I'm married to an older man who lived through this stuff when it was new and popular. What he has to remind me is that there was NOBODY doing music like this. When you hear those changes? They were the first ones to arrange a song that way. Or at least one or two others... you know like the Stones and the Who. When they first went on the Ed Sullivan Show it was the "long hair" (yes, that was considered long hair) that people commented on -- their energy and very enjoyable songs. The first hit I remember from them is "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" and "She Loves You" - such simplistic songs that were catchy (my father would complain about how stupid but I couldn't stop singing she loves you yeah yeah yeah). The older girls went crazy because of how cute Paul was. Before they became famous, the Beatles played in clubs in Germany so when they hit the scene, they had a lot of songs written. Lennon & McCartney wrote them, George Harrison later on. The Beatles were unbelievably famous before the Who even started. The Stones did not become super famous until a few years later, but nothing like Beatlemania. (Certainly over the years they are as famous but not back then.) One of the things that make The Beatles so great is how much they changed and took the rest of the music world with them in just 7 years as a band. When they first hit the scene, they did stick to the established formula somewhat and put out a lot of short catchy songs that were the required length to get airplay as singles, and they were the best at it, but then they evolved and changed the entire music landscape. I prefer their later songs and albums, which became more and more sophisticated, but you can see their greatness just by how many of these catchy gems they made in a very short period of time.

"We Can Work It Out" was recorded over two days in October 1965 in sessions amounting to 11 hours - the Beatles’ longest time spent completing a song to date. Paul McCartney wrote the upbeat verses and chorus, reportedly after a disagreement with his then-girlfriend, actress Jane Asher, while John Lennon had the idea for the pessimistic “Life is very short” counterpoint. According to John: "Paul did the first half, I did the middle eight. But you’ve got Paul writing, ‘We can work it out, we can work it out’ - real optimistic, y’know, and me impatient: ‘Life is very short and there’s no time for fussing and fighting, my friend.’" According to Paul: "I started writing the song to try to figure my way out of feeling bad after an argument (with Jane Asher). It was really fresh in my mind. You can’t write this kind of song two weeks later. You have to do it immediately. Writing a song is a good way to get your thoughts out and to allow yourself to say things that you might not say to the other person." Paul and Jane Asher unfortunately split up for good in 1968.

The best way to experience The Beatles music is chronologically! Start with some songs on their first records. Meet the Beatles was one of the first albums that everyone had to have after they first came to America in February 1964. Go back to that one. I Wanna Hold Your Hand was the first big hit in the States. They performed it on Ed Sullivan show and this song STILL holds up today as a great rockin’ song that changed THE WORLD!

When one of their songs leans towards positivity, that’s Paul’s influence. When it seems darker, that’s John’s influence. Sometimes when they were writing, John would encourage Paul to be a little more edgy while Paul would encourage John to lighten up a little when he got too hopeless sounding in his lyrics. They said that themselves. The two of them wrote most of their songs. They were only in their early TWENTIES! Incredible! Their music was so wonderful to discover. My friends and I would get a new album and play it over and over until we knew all of the lyrics and sang them. They came along after JFK was murdered and they gave us hope for our future. I was 13. The Beatles turned out over 185 original songs, that were virtually all very complex. Their lyrics, and melodies alway give good vibes. To this day, The Beatles are the highest earning act of all time. But even more impressive is how they played in their live shows, from 1963-1966. Nobody played better, or tighter live, than The Beatles! Their musicianship, stagecraft, and overall professionalism, was second to NONE, and they were all only in their very early 20's. Paul wrote the verses, John the middle eight. John said years later that Paul's lyrics tend to be happy and upbeat, while his own lyrics tended to be darker with certain bluesy edge. On the verses Ringo is hitting the snare drum on the two and four of the four bar measure.When it goes to Life is very short he changes and hits the snare on the 1,2,3,4.All 4 beats of the measure. it then switches to a waltz beat on fighting my friend which is 1,2,3 1,2,3 1,2,3 1,2,3.Really cool. I’ve been a huge Beatles fan from the beginning. I remember hearing this song when it first came on the radio. I remember how different it sounded to me at 13. Day Tripper was even better to me back then because it was a rocker and had the great guitar riff. That riff still holds up to this day. I ran out and bought the 45. "Day Tripper" was originally intended to be The Beatles’ final single of 1965. However, "We Can Work It Out" was felt by the group and their manager, Brian Epstein, to be the more commercial song. John Lennon disagreed, and fought to retain "Day Tripper" as the lead song (btw "Day Tripper" is a superb song!). The result was the single being marketed as the world’s first double A-side, which was released on 3 December 1965 in the UK - the same day as their sixth studio album "Rubber Soul" - and three days later in the US. In the UK, "We Can Work It Out"/"Day Tripper" entered the singles chart at number one, where it remained for five weeks and sold over a million copies. This double A-sided single also topped the charts in the US, and became The Beatles’ fastest-selling single since the release of "Can’t Buy Me Love" on 16 March 1964.

I was actually too young to be from the Beatles generation - my parents were too old...So I really "discovered" them much later in life. This is 1965. Realize they were very young. But their last appearance in 1969, they were adults. That growth was phenomenal. Their last works were more like Led Zeppelin. In this song, Paul wrote the beginning and the end. John wrote the middle. Then George Harrison arranged the middle to the tempo of a waltz. They just don’t get enough credit for being great musicians. Really good songwriting. This was from their Rubber Soul album, my favorite album and I still have it. That’s almost 60 years ago. I was five and it was a birthday gift. Any track on the album will blow you away. Later came the heavy rock sounds from John mostly. Helter Skelter and Revolution, and Come Together. Many more. Deep rabbit whole. Plus each of them had successful solo careers.

Not an accordion. John was playing a harmonium that they found hidden away in the studio by chance. John and Paul both could play various keyboard instruments. Even Ringo could play in C.

Writing from Australia...I'm 69, My mum bought the first FOUR Beatles albums when I was a kid...I still have them and I bought the remainder till Let it Be. I have them all on vinyl and no doubt they will outlast me.

I believe collectively they wrote almost 200 songs. They were then and are still amazing. My favorite band of all time. My favorite band since I first heard them, at the age of 15 yrs., 61 years ago!

I love every stage of the Beatles journey. The moment I hear one of their songs it makes me feel happy and young again. We Can Work It Out is such a great song and very representative of the mid Early Beatles. Hit after hit after hit through every stage of their career. Truly remarkable. Hey Jude was never a favorite Beatles song of mine, but I can still listen to it with a smile and the melody is fabulous as usual. The end goes on too long for my taste but I was listening to it the other day and was struck how subtle variations in the background instruments keep subtly changing that chorus and move it along in interesting ways. There are maybe three or 4 Beatles songs I don’t love and they tend to be what I would call “silly” songs. But even those are incredibly melodic and get stuck in my head sometimes. Glad you are diving deeper into The Beatles - John, Paul, George and Ringo. Their music hasn’t aged a day for me and millions of other people around the world.

1964 was a huge year for music. The Beatles had., I think, seven songs in the Billboard Top 100 for the year. Others on that top 100 included Barbara Streisand, Dean Martin, The Animals, Roy Orbison, The Drifters, and Jan & Dean. Big transition year for pop music---- we got "Hello Dolly", "People", "Dancin' in the Streets", "Oh Pretty Woman", "Dead Man's Curve", and "A Hard Day's Night" all in a twelve month span. Oh, and "Louie Louie". 1965 was the height of the "British Invasion": Beatles, Stones, Herman's Hermits, Dave Clark Five, Chad and Jeremy, and lots more.

George Harrison is the one you're struggling to remember. "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," "Something," and "Here Comes the Sun" are some of the Beatles' amazing tunes penned & sung (lead vocals) by George. HIGHLY recommend all three!

This is the Beatles. 1960's. Already showing that they are not the same, showing original music, very early in the era of rock and roll, not a genre yet, still a few years away, but this early music from the Beatles started a revolution in popular music. They are unmatched to this day.

They had an enormous effect on their fans. The music, humor, movies, dress, style, hair and personalities. Paul is dead deal, John putting his foot in his mouth or dropping clues to play with us. I liked having a physical Album. Waiting for the next release. They caused many to buy a guitar including me.

It was first issued as a double A-side single with "Day Tripper" in December 1965. The song was recorded during the sessions for the band's Rubber Soul album. I smiled when you said "Lennon looks young, he has short hair". My parents, and most adults at the time, hated the long hair the Beatles had. Now their sons wanted to grow their hair. Men/boys hair was supposed to be above the ears and off the collar. Are you a boy or a girl? This was around 64/65. The hair kept getting longer as the 60's wore on, and continued deep into the seventies. In the eighties the looks of many bands changed to much shorter hair. Look at Queen for Bohemian Rhapsody verses Queen live in Montreal, or Live Aid. In 1965 The Beatles were everywhere. Magazine covers, The Beatles cartoon on Saturday mornings, Beatle trading cards, wigs, lunch boxes. Kids and teenage baby boomers loved them, their parents hated them. When the Beatles went to India to meditate with the Maharishi, nehru shirts came into style. Many of the famous people of the day now had Indian Gurus to teach them wisdom and meditation. When John Lennon started wearing granny glasses, all the young people who wore glasses, switched to granny glasses. The effect these lads had on the youth culture was unprecedented, and has never been duplicated.

Note that in the US market in the '60s, it was expected for albums to include the current hit single, whereas British albums typically did not duplicate songs released as singles. This resulted in 11 Beatles albums being released by Capitol in the US from 1964 to 1966, culled from seven UK albums and various singles. This discrepancy between US and UK releases was rectified many years ago. So, all 12 studio albums recorded in the UK by the Beatles are available in the US, and are considered canon in both countries. This song is from their "Rubber Soul" album. Prior to this, although they were already popular, most of their music was pretty similar to many rock & roll artists of the period. With "Rubber Soul" they definitely showed the world that they were a step above. This is when they really became a driving force in the way future music would be written and produced. They were always looking for new sounds and original ways to use the studio equipment.

According to Beatles Bible, Paul wrote the verses to this song, and John wrote the middle eight. Paul is being optimistic and John being impatient. Paul wrote it after a disagreement with his then girlfriend, Jane Asher. It's one of the great things about John and Paul co-writing their songs together. I had the pleasure of seeing the Beatles in concert live in Portland Oregon in August 1965. I think it was on their second tour of the US. As I recall, they were scheduled to play somewhere else, but that fell through, so the opted to play in Portland instead. That was a lucky break for me, and an amazing once-in-a-lifetime experience. I figured if I don't see them at the Portland show, I'd never be able to see them anywhere else. I was not disappointed.

I was in high school when this song came out. I can say that I consciously attempted to try to hear what they're saying my entire life. Sometimes I failed, but I think I was always guided by this song's idea. Powerful song if you're young like I was.
