@@rwfrench66GenX The backlash against Disco was, some theorize, because it such broad appeal with and was a safe space for minorities, especially Black Americans and what we would now call LGBTQ people. Disco never sucked, bro.

@@matt.coburn you don’t speak for all music lovers so you can’t proclaim disco doesn’t suck, and I’m not your bro, and I don’t want to be your bro. I was 12 years old, rebellion was on my mind, and there was finally an American metal band that could compete with the English metal bands. They did for music in the 70’s what Nirvana did in the 90’s. It was transformational! Dance music will always be around, there are good songs in every genre, there are incredible artists in every genre from every time period, but that silk and polyester dance fad didn’t last. It’s sad to some people, others could care less, and there’s nothing wrong with that. I have Saturday Night Fever and Staying Alive in my iTunes movie library. I also have Grease and Xanadu. My music library has everything from Frank Sinatra to Frank Zappa. I’m a heterosexual white male who has been a music fan his whole life and I showed my support for Van Halen when they hit the scene by telling people my feelings about disco, and now I’m telling the internet. @robertcartier50883 жыл бұрын
A very deep rabbit hole... they wrote over 1000 songs! They started performing as young boys in 1955. Barry, the taller one, is the oldest brother, the other two, Robin (long hair) and Maurice were twins. They also had a younger brother, Andy, who had a solo career in the 80's. All but Barry have passed away now. They took over the world in the Disco era, but I prefer their late 60's - early 70's material. I recommend, "I Started A Joke" (1968), a song they originally wrote for Otis Redding, but he passed away before he could do it so they kept it for themselves.

The name Bee Gees came from a compilation of the initials of 3 people. Barry Gibb, Bill Gates (a Brisbane DJ who helped promote them) & Bill Goode (the promoter of the Redcliffe Speedway where as youngsters the boys performed at Interval time). I lived on the Redcliffe Peninsular Australia where they grew up. I was the same age as Barry and while I never knew them personally, I met them once in passing when they were still starting their singing careers.
@teviottilehurst3 жыл бұрын
Do you know Barry spent most of his childhood in the British Isles, his and his brothers' homeland? He was 12 when he moved to Australia. All three never lost their English accents.
@spagoz21363 жыл бұрын
@@teviottilehurst Yes I was aware of it & there is some old 8mm film showing them skylarking back where they lived in England before coming to Australia. IIRC they originally spent some time in Victoria (probably Bonegilla migrant camp) before moving up to Brisbane and ended up renting a house in the suburb of Cribb Island, which at the time was considered to be bottom of the barrel as far as cheap accommodation was concerned (The suburb was eventually levelled to make way for the extended runways at Brisbane Airport). The family wisely moved from there to the Redcliffe Peninsular (I believe the suburb of Clontarf) and the boys attended Humpybong State School, which was where they later met their drummer Colin Peterson. Colin was chosen to play the starring role in the movie Smiley (1956). The film producers came to Redcliffe looking for a young lad to cast & he got the role (I missed out :( ) Even though the boys were born in England they never forgot their time in Australia, as it was here that they got there big break into the music scene. In fact after Maurice & Robyn passed away, Barry returned to pay a visit to Redcliffe where he reminisced about the good times he and his brothers had during that part of their lives. He opened a walkway dedicated to the Bee Gees. Just some trivia for you. I could write about my encounters with them as youngsters, but it's just more trivia.
