This got a "HIGHLIGHTED" reply... So, do you think you would endeavor seeking out that Who Quadraphenia concert marketed on CD, the one with a narrative story line' added videos and film clips, and featuring the Great personality of Billy Idol as "Ace Face"... That is one freakin great show....

The intro was done by Pete Townshend not on a synthesizer but on a Lowrey Berkshire Deluxe TBO-1 home organ (1968 model). He used “marimba repeat” setting. In my opinion it's one of the greatest hooks of all time.

The song is actually about the Vietnam war with teenage wasteland referring to wasting teen lives fighting. The unusual musical effects, including the long intro are Pete Townsend's experiments with one of the very first programmable synthesizers.

Saw the Who in 1982 and '89. Yet perhaps their most memorable performance was the benefit concert held shortly after 9/11 at Madison Square Garden. The first notes of Baba O'Riley began and seeing those thousands of NYPD and NYFD guys playing air guitars and going crazy is indelible.

@mrichards6795

Excellent reaction! A legendary song, from a legendary album, by a legendary band. I would recommend "Won't Get Fooled Again" and "Behind Blue Eyes" next. Then "Young Man Blues", live at the Isle of Wight in 1970, is a must. Keith Moon is considered by many to be the best drummer rock ever had. (That fun argument usually revolves around Keith Moon of the Who, John Bohnam of Led Zeppelin, and Neil Peart of Rush.) He is teamed with one of the best bass players in rock, John Entwistle. The band has an awesome music and song writer (and equally talented guitarist and keyboardist) in Pete Townsend. And a vocalist in Roger Daltrey who can hit anything out of the park with his voice.

oh my god......... I grew up a country boy, and parties meant a bonfire in the hills, the lot of us wandering up the cow-paths at dusk, carrying a half keg or cases of beer and a lot of weed.... Light that fire, get it roaring by the time darkness falls.... And a "boom-box" with extra batteries, a boom-box so big that it was all a teen-aged boy could do to carry it.... Out there in the hills with the fire roaring, and every time, the first song of the night, echoing in the hills, "Baba O'Riley"

The Who wrote "Baba O'Riley" after their Woodstock performance, and the song captures the spirit of that music festival from 50 years ago. I was there. Albums in the 60's and early 70's had music measured in decibels, and The Who would hit 125 db. Along with "Won't Get Fooled Again", savor "Behind Blue Eyes". Your reactions are appreciated, as they have me going through the clouds of nostalgia recalling my initial impressions listening to them live.

I’m 54 and I enjoy watching the younger generation listening to music I grew up on. I hear a lot of young kids call me Boomer even though I’m a Gen X but if they knew the music I grew up on was cold and fire they might understand I was young once too and they’ll be old too some day!

The Who had the most ardent and rabid concert fans in rock history (esp. in the early '80s). On the day of concerts, people would sometimes get killed by being crushed in enormous rush mob scenes outside the gates of the stadium concerts they used to sell-out. A huge one happened in Cincinnati in the early '80s where 20+ people died outside of Riverfront Stadium (I think). They were also (maybe still are) the Guinness Book of World Record holder for loudest ever rock band. Between Roger Daltrey's vocals, Keith Moon's (drumming), and Pete Townshend's "trademark" windmill-style (guitar), it's pretty easy to see why...
