Well, Phil was the bass player in addition to the lead singer so only guitar wouldn't work. A Black Irish hard rocker gent broke all the rules back then. Greatly missed. BTW the live version of this is exemplary. They never lacked for ball busting guitarists.

You are right. Gary's moments with Thin Lizzy were sadly few and far between, but, as they say. small but perfectly formed. love the band, love all the guitarists involved over the years, yes, even the short lived contribution of Midge Ure.

Lizzy with Phil was amazing. Now, how about a reaction to the other Irish legend of that time, the Irish guitar great Rory Gallagher? Gone way too soon, Rory was on the same level as Clapton, Page, Beck & Hendrix. Check out this 1982 live performance of "Moonchild" at the 1982 Rockpalast performance in Loreley for a sampling of what he could do with just his hands, his battered Strat, an AC-30 amp and a treble booster: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y6LVko18ZbmKaKs It's mind blowing!

Just to see you react and appreciate …. so cool & happy - thanks man❤. so i discovered this live on live & dangerous when it came out in 78 with the magnificent (best?) line up with Lynott, Downey and Robbo & Scott. There are multiple fabulous versions of this live as many have commented on below which really are Lizzy at their best. HOWEVER, this studio version, written and played by Gary Moore initially hs a different groove, feel and smoothness to it…. as you said a lot sweeter compared to the anguish of the live versions. Gary’s playing is exemplary. so yeah, you can understand how Sade picked up her soul and feeling from this version. so cheers man for keeping Phil & Gary’s music alive and Thin Lizzy ❤
