Speaking of great Irish bands, are you familiar with the Cranberries featuring the late great Dolores O'Riordan? They have a powerful song called Zombie, which touches on the IRA and Northern Ireland. Look for the official video, it's quite sad, yet powerful and moving. It has 1.4B views

As a first-generation American, I learned many an Irish song from my mother. My mind was completely blown by TL's version of "Whiskey In The Jar". It's very, very different to the version you'll hear in pubs, yet super-catchy and rockin'!

Another occasional member of Thin Lizzy was Irish guitarist Gary Moore. Gary was an incredible guitarist who later shifted from hard rock into the blues. He and Phil collaborated on a number of songs, including Parisienne Walkways. There is an incredible live version with Phil on vocals and bass. Another big Gary Moore song is Still Got the Blues if you want to hear his later career, or the song "Over the Hills and Far Away" which featured Irish folk band The Chieftains. That song has spawned numerous covers.

Tin Lizzie was a nickname in the US for the model T Ford automobile back in the day. That is probably where the name of the comic book character came from.

“We were throwing around ideas for a name after a rehearsal one night,” added Downey, “and Eric suggested Tin Lizzie, who was a character in [children’s comic magazine] ‘The Dandy.'” The name eventually stuck, and Bell switched the spelling to Thin Lizzy, a playful reference to the local accent of their hometown of Dublin, Ireland, which would have pronounced “Thin” as “T’in.” “We all laughed at that one,” he added. “But the next day, we were still trying to come up with a name, but nothing seemed right, so Eric again put forward Tin Lizzie. As we had nothing better, we thought why not. It was also Eric who changed the spelling to Thin Lizzy.”

Didn’t know what they sounded like , looked like or where they were from. My buddy and I were hanging out where the buses were part, hoping to meet Blackmore. There was a tall, black guy talking to some girls and he had an Irish brogue. I went up to him and asked if he was from Ireland. He said yes and asked me who I was there to see. I replied Rainbow. He said “I’d keep me eye on the support band…I hear they’re cracken. When they introduced the opening band, I realized I met Phil Lynott! Wonderful memory . Long live Phil! Long Live Lizzy!!!! You should definitely listen to their version of Whiskey in the Jar. It's an interesting take with a rock sound, but the lyrics sung much slower than is traditionally done. It's always cool to hear irish bands try their own version of traditional songs that were likely their introduction to music. These guys were the right age to have heard some of those great old bands like the Dubliners on television and radio while growing up.

From the U.S., “The Boys are Back in Town” was the only Top 40 hit for Thin Lizzy in this country (so, the person writing what you are reading, Diane, is definitely writing that from perspective of the U.S. charts only). Although not hits here in the states, Thin Lizzy’s version of “ Whiskey In a Jar” (originally from The Dubliners) and the band’s “Jailbreak” (which you might want to do a video listen to) were staples of U.S. Album Rock stations, and continue to be staples of U.S. Classic Rock stations over 45 years after their release, & are now quite popular in this country. Another Irish band you might want to check out is the punk, later early new wave band, The Undertones, who were quite popular on many very late 70’s, and early 80’s U.S. alternative Rock stations. The Undertones were from Northern Ireland.

Hello Diane. Great to see your reaction to a great song. Thin Lizzy were huge, also a huge part of my early musical education. Yes, this is a really upbeat shout it from the rooftops anthem, but Lizzy could also be stunningly soulful in their ballads. You've got to check out the live version of "Still in love with you". The song just drips with heartfelt emotion and combined with Brian Robertson's magnificent guitar solo it just brings me to tears thinking about the girls that could have been the one. For me it's their best piece of work ever. Robertson (Robbo) was only 17 when he joined the band and he was shit hot even then. Check it out please.

I definitely recommend giving Whiskey in the Jar a listen it is an iconic tune for them that though they remade it in their own way it has become the basis of so many modern renditions. I love love love Thin Lizzy. (I suppose back in the 1970s, I was a meathead brother...) Hanging out at Dino's Bar & Grill and blasting out my favorite song on the jukebox is on my Rock 'n Roll bucket list. I assume it's entirely invented for the song, but surely since then someone has opened a place using the name. As for the performance, either they are lip-synching to the studio record, or they are uncannily good at recreating it live. My guess is lip-synching for a TV appearance. Yes, Lynott died young due to complications from a heroin addiction. Ah, you looked it up. If you revisit Thin Lizzy in a future video, I suggest Cowboy Song (my favorite Thin Lizzy song, and one of my favorites by any artist), Jailbreak, Dancing in the Moonlight (NOTE: There is another song with the same title by King Harvest. They are both good, but are entirely different songs), or Whiskey In the Jar. They count as a "one hit wonder" in the United States because they only had one song that broke the Top 40 here, although several of their songs have remained popular on classic rock radio. They had numerous hits in Ireland and the UK, though. As far as suggesting songs for future reactions, I'm torn between songs that are very well known (for better KZbin numbers) and maybe those that are a bit less mainstream, because some of those are very cool.

Suggest both! There’s no character limit… At least I haven’t been there to be one? Oh, that’s a good question is there a character limit on KZbin?… I don’t know!

Thanks Diane! I have heard this song before but had no idea that Thin Lizzy had an Irish background or that they were that old of a band. Always thought their music was from the 80's or 90's. Good to know!

Hi Diane! This is a great reaction. I can tell you love this song! I do too! ❤ I couldn’t help noticing that there was an entire verse missing. It has to do with one of the “Boys” trying to pick up a woman and being rejected. I don’t know if you did that or if this was just the version you listened to. Either way, in my opinion it shouldn’t be controversial. I still enjoyed what I saw, but I was disappointed at the end. I consider myself old fashioned. I don’t want to hear graphic lyrics or gross acts in a song, but I’m also not into the newer cancel culture censorship either. I think the song needs to be played as it was recorded at the time of its popularity. I want to finish positively by saying I really like you and your channel. We’re all just people with different perspectives on things, and I’m just sharing some of mine.

10:16 If you gigged at Bruxelles pub in Temple bar then you met Phil Lynott's mother Philomena. She used to frequent the pub until she became ill with cancer. Thin Lizzy used to gig regularly at Bruxelles until they were signed to a record contract.

They wanted to be called Tin Lizzy, after a 🤖 robot cartoon (also a model T Ford)..but the record company mistook Tin for an Irish pronounce of Thin, so they minted them as Thin Lizzy and they stuck with it. A favorite band of mine 🤠.

The Boys of Summer, in Don Henley's song, were baseball players. So, I always thought that the song saying it's almost summer, and the boys are back in town referred to ball players. I guess in England, footballers would be more common than baseball players. Thin Lizzy had many hits and so many bands have covered them. Even Metallica has a great cover of Whiskey in the Jar. Great video, Diane.

Saw them at Liverpool Empire in '79. Very good. nice to see them still liked. Phil used to do this thing, in this song , "Does anyone have a bit of Irish in them ?" In Liverpool, everyone, so the crowd roars. "Do any of the girls want a bit more Irish in them" Roar but slightly higher pitch. Sarah, and Parisienne walkways are very fine tracks

Such a fun song Diane. Don't think of this journey in terms of how little you know. Think of it as how much there is to discover. Each new to you song opens a wonderful world of new experiences to treasure. Good video, and say hi to Editor Diane for me. She's an Irish national treasure. As for a band recommendation, Steely Dan is amazing. My favorite song is FM. But their most popular is either Reelin' in the Years, or Do It Again. Whatever you choose, you can't go wrong.
