This awesome!! When I got my first professional mechanic job working in a high performance speed shop my dad gave me a $10,000 loan to build my first box ( he was a NHRA Mechanic ) so he understood what I needed. And 4 years later when I had enough money saved I handed him an envelope with $20,000 cash as an appreciation an pay back for the help he gave me. Fast forward 17 years now, we build 6 sec capable crate engines for local guys.

When I started, I started with basic hand tools- assorted sized ratchets and sockets, screw drivers, pry balls, pliers, etc. but my uncle sent me a few of my grandfathers air tools he inherited. They weren’t expensive or special in any way. But he explained my grandpa got him his first set of tools when he started so he was going to send me something that would get me buy until I could get new stuff. Many years later, I have upgraded but have the old stuff at home and still makes me tear up when I see my grandpas name engraved on my tools

Just a quick tip that will hopefully avoid headache down the line… Chrome sockets are for wrenches, the adapter is ok for a drill. For impact wrenches & drivers look for black oxide finish and label that says “rated for impact” or “impact ready”. Some heavy duty Chrome may work for a bit but generally they are thinner walled and have a balance of higher hardness & lower strength that’s not designed to withstand or take advantage of the concussive blows from an impact’s anvil. At some point they’re likely to crack. The higher strength/lower hardness of Impact sockets will probably make your tool run better as well, deforming to absorb and transfer force over a longer period of time, causing less rattle and power lost as heat
@Garandmasthumb
@Garandmasthumb 2 жыл бұрын
I use the impact sockets for everything unless a special case arises. chrome is a waste unless you have a space concern.

Congrats on the new job bud. I just had my last day at Jiffy Lube yesterday and there I didn’t need to bring my own tools or anything. Although I was heading towards the 2nd mechanic position but things just weren’t working out, so I finally got a call back from a Chevrolet dealership and they offered me a job as a lube tech to at least get my foot in the door and start, so I’m supposed to start Monday, so I gotta fill my current toolbox and organize everything how I need to and then take everything out and load it in the back of my truck to take with me AND I a, getting my own Bay Area thank god. But yep, new jobs I get anxious for but I know I’m gonna do what I always do, and give my 200% and do my best and see where we go. Good luck on the new job dude! We both are gonna rock the new jobs! I’ll never be afraid to admit if my parents helped me and bought me things. That’s what parents are there for, to help you out. My parents are the same way, they are super supportive in pretty much anything that I want to do. And this is how I’m going to be when it’s time for me to have kids, I’ll support them Honestly a lot of people talk shit about the Harbor Freight tools, but my god for the price you really can’t beat it. I would rather buy Harbor Freight shit for 1/4 of the cost rather than snap-on or MAC, etc. because if shit breaks then I can go just buy another one, not a big deal

I have the same 34” full bank roll cart in black as well. I think you’ll love it. It rolls well too with the large casters.. and the top is deep enough for plenty of stuff. I’m not quite finished setting it up/filling it up,(outgrew the US General smaller 5-Drawer cart). Also remember to utilize magnetic holders!! (Sides, back, lid, etc.). Good luck with the new gig! 🙌🏻🙏🏻

I like the set up. I too have a US General box (got it last year). Mine is just a service cart so not full bank like yours. For Christmas one year my parents bought me a Masterforce 36 inch full bank cart from Menards after seeing me struggle with space for my tools, and my now brother in law gave me one of his old boxes for use a top box for it. That was every bit of 6 years ago and it was truly the best gift ever. When I graduated for small engine repair last year I added to my collection of tools (hence the US General box), and now I’ve got a good amount of storage. Almost need the actual topper for my big box. Best of luck on the new job! Hopefully it goes well for ya!

Been a professional auto mechanic for 3 years, and performance engine machinist for 1 year before that, I will warn you, after having three of the snap on versions of your cart, that arrangement will change, and eventually you'll cave and get the ratcheting wrenches. I would recommend the Cornwell set, doesn't skip sizes, and you get both standard and metric for around 500 bucks. Good luck!

First time watching the video, I started out with a harbor freight box, harbor freight tools, some craftsman, some Lyle tools, vise grips, channel lock tools, Milwaukee tools, and few others, after I started getting my certs and time under my belt, I bought a used repo snap on box dirt cheap, and started going to tool auctions and stuck gold with a few things from snap on and was able to warranty it out for the new version and then built my current set up, my harbor freight box is in my garage but my is general service cart sits next to my snap on box and inside my work tool box is a range of mixed tools not all snap on. I love the video and also putting together beginning tool boxes.

Happiness is a full tool box. Well almost full, it won't take long as you very well know. Those units behind you need a tour.

I love the setup. I plan to get that same full bank cart some day, but I’m rolling with the 4 drawer for now. I’d also go heavy on those Icon tools like you. The few I have are great so far. Good luck and let us know how the setup serves you!

Spray adhesive the drawer liners to the box drawers, they bunch up over time when opening and closing the drawers with tools. It's great that you have a ton of organization type of tool holders. I never worked at a dealership, only my own supermoto and street bike and I am a general car and small truck mechanic for 13 yrs, now im part time due to attending my local university for mechanical engineering and maths. You have all the basic tools but a power probe, blind hole bearing puller on a slide hammer, spark tester, compression and fuel pressure gauges, digital tire inflators (consistently more accurate over the life of the tool), everything else is specialty tools that you'll figure out as you work in the field. Power sports assembly checklists and inspections, oil changes, tires and tubes, battery and stator checks and installs, fork rebuilds with checking for tubes surface corrosion and of course new case rebuilds if their chain snapped or gears were grinding. Good luck dude, consistent good work is always better than fast but un-thorough work.

New mechanic here: Great video! Thanks for taking the time and energy to put it together! Also, BIG shout out to Mama for sponsoring the box 😎 I just came here to say I ended up buying a Gen 2 Bosch "Freak" for my beginner impact and drill driver(s). It's a 2 in 1 combo, 1/2" square with a 1/4" hex in the middle. Got it for $100 and I love the thing. I plan on upgrading very soon to Milwaukee, but I'm not sure if I wanna pull a business loan out just yet 😂 Anyway, thanks a lot for the video!

The US General line is the best value in boxes out there. Probably the single best value item in all of Harbor Fright. I have the 44" roller and top chest + 5 drawer service cart. Just a home DIYer but these things are solid and would advise anyone starting out in auto service to consider them and save some money for more and/or better tools. It's the tools that will make you money. You can always upgrade your storage as you advance.
