Can I just add, if you have to leave the bus while you are between destinations, (fuel stop, etc) always leave your credentials (tour pass) on the driver's seat when you leave. That way, there is a count of how many people are not on board. You definitely don't want to get 'oil spotted'. Also, bus call times; The rule is, "On time is late, early is on time." If the bus call is 6:00AM that means the but will be rolling out of wherever AT 6:00AM, not 6:01AM. If you miss the call, it will be your responsibility to get to the next destination. After many years on the road, I have personally seen this many times. It ain't pretty.
@SeanHurwitzMusic4 жыл бұрын
In a perfect world... Yes. But I've never seen anyone leave anyone behind. I've heard stories of doing it by mistake, but on purpose... I've never seen it happen. Regarding the leaving the bus between destinations, you ALWAYS have to tell someone. And...sometimes ppl are drunk and they forget to leave credentials. ALWAYS have to check for a full bus before leaving a stop... 100%.🤘🏼🤘🏼

as a professional entertainer motorcoach operator (tour bus driver), please clean up after yourself. the vast majority of artists/acts i’ve driven have been over the age of 18. you’re an adult so please act like one. also, be quiet when it’s lights out. i’ve seen one too many people get clocked in the mouth for being ridiculous at 3am and waking up someone else. FYI: tips are certainly appreciated but most often the operators are some of the highest paid folks on tour.

@SeanHurwitzMusic2 жыл бұрын
@@cehaem2 incorrect from my experience. I've seen many VERY seasoned touring pros (musicians, engineers and general crew) who get drunk enough to lose all sensibility at 3am. So... Not a rookie move, but an immature one nonetheless.
@cehaem22 жыл бұрын
@@SeanHurwitzMusic Well, it's a rule of thumb, at least in my experience. Not each and every rookie will go on a bender every night for a week or two and not every seasoned musician will hit the hay by 10,30. But from my experience, most long-standing and professional bands always knew when to call it a day. I mean, you have toured a lot and touring is intense and if you don't give your body time to regenerate, enough sleep etc it's all gonna come back with a vengeance. Especially on longer tours. I played a few tours through Europe both as a musician and roadie/merch guy. I´ve never been full-pro and so weren't probably 80% of the people I shared the stage with or I worked for. You know, these were club tours and usually on the third of fourth day things would just quiet down. Maybe it was due to the prospect that a day or two after finishing the tour we would be back in our day jobs so there was literally to time to regenerate.
@SeanHurwitzMusic2 жыл бұрын
I getcha. Yeah.... From my experience there are those who know when to quit and how important sleep is (I'm literally reading the book "Why We Sleep" by Matthew Walker as I'm writing these lines). And there are those of us who consider the road a party zone. Both can be pro's, or not.... It's a matter of what's important to the individual. I, like you, appreciate sleep. I guess it also helps that I don't drink or use any substances (sleeping pills included). Hope to meet you some time on the road.

As a driver of 34 years let me add... If you pop the cap off your beer bottle while you are standing in front of the trash chute WHY can you not reach down and dispose of it in the chute? Why must it go onto the counter for me to handle? CUP HOLDERS are are for drinks NOT TRASH. Gentlemen, if you have a "bunk sock" I would appreciate you putting it elsewhere when it's sheet change day. Ladies... The paper goes in the trash can NOT THE TOILET when you are finished. If you are a smoker and come up front keep in mind that when you smoke what you exhale is being sucked in by the driver's HVAC system (that set of vents at the floor of the dash) in the winter your driver is either going to turn off the heat and freeze their ass off with the window down until you finish or enjoy your cigarette with you (not all of us smoke) Smoke that Mother fucker quick! It never ceases to amaze me how many half drank bottles of water end up on the counter or in a bunk, as if your half drank bottle is distinguishable from any other and you are somehow going to recover it and chance not drinking someone else's backwash... Unless you put your name on it with a Sharpie DUMP IT IN THE SINK AND THROW THE BOTTLE AWAY!! As to bottles in bunks... on sheet day, if it isn't sealed and un-opened it's going in the trash. DON'T SLAM MY BAY DOORS!!! If it's snowing, don't track your wet shoes across the carpet in the bunk area. Yes it's a pain in the ass to remove and put the shoes back on, but your bus mates will appreciate dry feet in the middle of the night when they get up to piss. And finally.... your ride is often a direct reflection of your attitude. You may actually have a GREAT smooth driver, but you and your bus mates are DICKS!

I have always been fascinated by what goes on behind the scenes of a tour. Question, could you give me an idea as to what schedule the roadies and stage crew have during the day and night? I'm trying to figure out when they sleep!! 😀
@SeanHurwitzMusic2 жыл бұрын
@Bodeans59 that depends on SO many different things. It depends on when the crew is needed. Is it a day show or a night show? Is the band headlining with one opener or is it a festival? Sometimes soundcheck is at 8am.... Sometimes it's at 4pm. Did everyone rage on the bus last night and go to sleep at 4am or was it an 11pm chill night on the bus? So... It just depends on the circumstances. Hope that helps a little 😊
@bodeans592 жыл бұрын
@@SeanHurwitzMusic Thanks! Let's say it's a night gig, you are the headlining act, and everyone is behaving. What would their schedule be like?
@SeanHurwitzMusic2 жыл бұрын
@bodeans59 well... If we're on a bus tour, I'd say we got to the venue at 6am... The bus driver is already in his hotel by 7am, getting some rest. The crew will probably sleep until around 10am (we all will), grab some breakfast, and prep the stage for the band. Sound check maybe around 1pm. By 2 or 3pm they're done. They'll chill on the bus, relax, watch some movies grab some food. Then maybe take care of some of the gear that needs maintenance around 6-7pm. Maybe grab some dinner as well at catering. Then start prepping for our show... Say we go on at 9 or 10. After the show they'll pack gear, load it up and then just chill on the bus.... Maybe grab after show food around midnight... Chill until bus call (when everyone needs to be at the bus) at 2am. The driver shows up... And 15-30min later we are on our way to the next show.

Bands that are touring with 1 bus & trailer, or even 2-3 busses and a semi or two don't typically tour with their own security. You might see that at the uper echelons of arena touring, but typically security is hired locally, and bands don't walk around with bodyguards trailing them (unless you're a US band touring in South America, Phillippines, or other countries that are "less-safe" than most western countries).

You usually have your clothes back by 4pm if you go that route. So, there are options. 3. Yessir. Just let the driver know you gotta go and he’ll stop at the nearest spot. @SeanHurwitzMusic2 жыл бұрын
The driver gets a hotel room every day on a normal sized tour. I'm sure there are exceptions, but if we're talking about the standard, they get a hotel room every day to sleep while everyone is working. That way you know (you hope you know)that your driver is well rested for the night drive. If there is a LOOONG trip that must be done within a few days, they will bring on another driver so they can drive in shifts for those few days. In that case, the driver will use a bunk to sleep while the secondary driver drives his shift 👍🏼

Even if I could, I wouldn't shit on the bus and stink it up for the other 10 people on board. But again.... To each their own. I respect your decisions and hope your band mates do as well 😊

Is there a “preferred” bunk in your opinion? Also, I haven’t been on a tour bus in years but are seatbelts a thing now?
@SeanHurwitzMusic Жыл бұрын
Great questions. #1 - Each person likes specific bunk locations for different reasons. So it almost works out that everyone usually likes different bunks and 80% of the time you get the bunk you wanted. #2 - No seat belts to the best of my knowledge 😊 Hope that helps. Lmk if you have any follow up questions 👍🏼👍🏼

Rule No. 1: Do not sh!t in the bus toilet. Rule No. 2: Do not sh!t in the bus toilet. Rule No. 3: Do not talk about Fight Club. Rule No. 4: Do not sh!t in the bus toilet. One of Frank Zappa's original Mothers did that in England, and got fined a Pound for a Brown on the Bus. That's where FZ got the song title. No kidding.

BWAHHAHAA Nope. Not the trash. #1 Rule is: NO POOPING ON THE BUS!! Otherwise, I'd have been a freakin roadie. 🤣😂. Therefore, I won't even tell you about the time I bought liquid codeine in Vancouver and was completely unable to walk off the bus, could no longer hold it, so pooped in a plastic grocery bag and then, too intoxicated to go find a trash can while everyone else was in soundcheck...I MAY have whipped the bag out the door, underneath the bus and quickly dove back into my TM bf's bunk and closed the curtains... just about 20 seconds before the 2 guitarists jumped back into the bus. 😳🙁😆. Well 1st dude is a prissy little thing who started making allll sorts of baby noises and screaming "WHO SHIT ON THE BUS?!?!" about half a foot from my face. Other guy was super cool and I felt like he was laughing for me, so I somehow managed to stay quiet and didn't make a peep til the bus was full again. WHEW. That lasted til the bf came back, hit the codeine then neither of us could stop howling about it the rest of the night. 🤘🤘 Oopsie. It was an emergency. Which still doesn't qualify as a proper excuse. #1 rule of bus tours: NO POOPING ON THE BUS!! EVER!!! 🤣

@@SeanHurwitzMusic then things over there must be very different. over here, the driver does what he is paid for, which includes driving, loading and cleaning the bus. i never heard about that "rule" from any bus driver. also, over here the labels usually own the bus. the driver has no business on deciding who is on/off the bus. if he has a problem with how things are going, he can quit, though, but then his agency will send another driver. at the end, we are all in it for the money.

@SeanHurwitzMusic7 ай бұрын
Great question. Can’t say I’ve ever encountered that in all my years. No one has had to go SO bad that they had to go every 5min. If that were the case, I would say you got a few options. One, the bus eventually pulls over at a gas station and waits until you are better. Everyone would understand. Option number 2, you put a bag in the toilet, do your business in the bag and then get rid of it….until you get to a rest stop where you can go back to option #1. That what I’d do anyway. Hope that helps.

Bus drivers make $1000 a day. Why are you tipping them? Musicians make shit for money.
@SeanHurwitzMusic2 жыл бұрын
Look, to each their own. If someone's driving you safely for a month straight and doing a great job as a driver, why not show some love¿ It's not about what they make per day, it's about showing appreciation. And also.... If someone drives the band and Crew (for example... 10 ppl) on a bus for a month straight and then then each one throws in a $20 or $50 bill in for a tip...I don't think it's gonna break the bank for anyone on that bus. But again, this is a personal preference. If you don't wanna tip, I'm not gonna make you tip. 👍🏼😊
