CV, I need to explain something else to you. Way back when the movie, “Crocodile Dundee” was very popular in the US, its Aussie star, Paul Hogan, was a well known Aussie face, so Tourism Australia asked him to make some commercials to lure American tourists to Australia. (In truth, we are much more likely to travel to the US than Americans are to travel to Australia, because they think it’s too far! Pfft! They don’t get it!). Anyway, the commercials went ahead and Paul knew that Americans wouldn’t know what prawns were and told the producers that if it’s to attract Americans, we need to say shrimp, even though that’s actually incorrect, because prawns and shrimp are different species of crustaceans. Consequently the tag line became, “Put another shrimp on the barbie” or “We’ll put some more shrimp on the barbie for ya.” So the slogan the young fellow used was correct, but not what we actually eat. We have prawns. Any shrimp we get here are fished from Asian waters and used in Asian cooking. As for Fosters, it was originally made here for the tourists, we don’t drink it ourselves, aside from the occasional oddball who defends it. Aussies prefer the good stuff and we have loads of it, plus hundreds of locally brewed craft beers. Fosters is now made in UK.

It's an interesting point that while Australian snakes haven't changed, they are becoming less deadly on a global scale. This appears to simply be a solid broadcast education about snakes, and how to behave around them, widespread knowledge about snake first aid, pressure bandage, don't move, and development of antivenom, of which we are now helping our northern neighbours to also develop some for their own snakes. The antivenom isn't in our first aid kits, it in the hospital and remote ambo's eg the flying doctors. It does wonders, but that initial first aid of not moving is essential. Oh, and most won't bite you if you're not trying to catch them.
@GarryMercer-tq5uo5 ай бұрын
we have antivenom for snakes and funnelwebs but its not in homes, only in hospitals as its a severe touch and go long extreme proceedure. Firstyou have to be able to get to a hospital in time. If you get bitten and have a snake bite kit, you wrap the limb and you cannot move or the venom will spread . If you cant move how do you get to a hospital? You need paramedics to come to you treat you and get you to hospital to be revived. If you are remote youre probably screwed. Ive had hundreds of very close encounters with snakes nearly jumping on many, none have tried to bite me, However my friend who lives even more remote than myself knelt on a death adder in his vegetable garden and it didnt bite him. A year later he was bitten twice by a brown snake the 2nd most venomous snake in the world in the same garden. He survived with no after effects which was miraculous considering the distance to the antivenin. This is the thing, a lot of bites are dry bites or bites that the snake decides not to inject so much venom. It depends on how afraid the snake has become and the length of time he has to munch on you before he thinks you will injure him. Brown snakes have short fangs and thick jeans can help. Black snakes are considered not so venomous by brown snake standards but they have long fangs and their venom is the most painful, there was a man near here that was slow to get to hospital from a black snake bite and he died. But if you are heavily envenomated and you survive due to the anti venom, its not plain sailing from there , you will never really get over it physically.
@evectionality5 ай бұрын
The first aid and not moving is essential. Let people find you. The poison is spread through the lymphatic system, ie via the contraction of muscles. Indigenous Australians used to treat a snake bit by lying down and not moving for three days.

The bird behind her is a an Ibis. It’s a waterbird that used to thrive in the rural areas of Australia where there were wetlands for them to thrive. After the long drought, their water supply dried up and they had the smarts to head towards the coast to look for water. They settled in the suburbs and have never gone back to their old habitat. If you’ve ever seen ancient Egypt with the paintings on the walls and inside the pyramids, you will gave seen the Ibis. There’s something that city dwellers have caused by their filthy habits, eg, dropping uneaten food in the nearest rubbish bin, or even worse, throwing it on the street where it washes into our waterways and pollutes the rivers! The Ibis not only lost their water supply, they also lost their food, ie, fish and other creatures that live in the wetlands, so they have adapted to looking for human foods in the rubbish bins, which is often bad for them. Now those same litterbugs are calling our beautiful Ibis, the ugly name of “bin chickens”. It disgusts me that humans don’t appreciate true beauty in nature, nor do they recognise how wasteful they are with food!

As an Aussie with arachnophobia who's had several terrifying encounters with dinner plate-sized spiders, I have a particularly harrowing tale to share. The worst encounter happened during a blackout, naturally - cos what terrifying spider encounter would be complete without the ambiance of a horror movie? In hindsight, it felt like a cosmic joke at my expense. I can almost picture God nudging Mother Nature with a wink, saying, "Watch this one - popcorn?" So anyway, I had waited for the storm to pass, then grabbed a torch & headed to the bathroom for a shower. I plonked the torch on the vanity, its beam pointing to the ceiling. And there it was, illuminated like a monster in a spotlight 🕷️🔦 A spider almost the size of the toilet seat, over by the door, trapping me in the room 😰 The sudden light startled the spider, making it jump slightly. This jittery movement from a creature straight out of my nightmares triggered a shrill scream from me 😱 echoing through the bathroom. The ear-piercing sound scared the spider again, causing it to jump once more, which set off another round of even louder screams from me 😱 My screams only made the spider more frantic as it started a jittery dance, causing me to scream even more shrilly. Over & over we went, stuck in a comical yet terrifying dance of mutual fear, each reacting to the other's movements in a seemingly endless loop. Me afraid of the giant, eight-legged monster & it equally scared of the loud, four-legged freak with the blinding light. This chaotic scene eventually ended after my neighbour summoned the Police, thinking bloody murder... 😂 And this spider was only the 2nd biggest I've ever seen 😰 Oh yes, I have come face to face with the Grandaddy of Spiders before too... 🕷️😱 After an encounter like that, it takes weeks, even months to let your guard down again. The longer you go without seeing one, the more nervous you get tho, cos you know you're overdue for a run-in. In the meantime you just remain vigilant, always checking everything: shoes, the bed, the mailbox, under bucket lips - you name it. Over the years, I've conditioned myself to better deal with the smaller & average-sized ones, by shooing them outside. I won't kill them tho; they don't deserve that. It's not their fault they look so creepy! But when the whoppers come along, I have to call a neighbour or a mate to deal with it. Despite all this, I still love Australia. It's a beautiful paradise - & if this is the price I have to pay for the privilege, it's worth it 👍 Cheers mate 🍻😁🇦🇺

Ooh, I've had a few good run ins with wall puppies. Once, it was chilling under a pillow in my favourite climbing tree. I stared at it for a solid minute before I realised what I was looking at (am visually impaired). Freaked, and slowly climbed down cause my arms were quivering. Second time, one was chilling on a window sill in the backroom of the music block at school. It was listening to me sing, when I shrieked for about ten seconds, loud enough for the whole school to hear. About the size of my hand. The third and fourth were while I was living in a refuge. I think the one on the bathroom ceiling takes the cake as the biggest, probably large enough for a face hug. And the other, I have no clue what kind, but it saw me in the dining room, at the breakie bar, and began charging at me. I, again, shrieked, and sprung over the bar, onto the kitchen counter. Eventually another roommate and my case worker walked in to see what the commotion was about. Cue me in fetal position, backed into a corner on the bench, looking like I just saw my great gran reanimated. Only ever saw funnel web nests, one being in my room. Never saw a funnel web in the wild, just at the Reptile Park. And every single spider I've ever seen larger than my big toe, it makes me dry wretch from anxiety.

These were late teenage kids so ACDC is not the first thing they'll listen to but they do know their classic songs like "It's a long way to the top when you want to rock and roll" which is a line from one of the best. That bird was an Australian Ibis commonly known as a bin chicken cos they always raid the bins! They came to the coast during one of our long droughts and decided to stay cos there is more food. They are a wetlands bird hence the long beak. This was recorded in Brisbane where it doesn't get really cold in winter but as you get further south we have proper winters with frost everywhere and snow on the mountains. Our Snowy mountains cover more area than the European Alps. Yeah ... Nah. Is an agreement that you think the speaker thinks what they're saying is correct but you don't agree with it or you don't want to do something they suggest. Others might have a slightly different take on the meaning. Chilly Bin or Esky. 1st NZ, 2nd Australian for a box with a handle for carrying food to a picnic that keeps the food cool when you add an ice pack to it. Kiwis have a very short "i" sound which is what we usually tease them about. Whenever we're in a hard spot we always stick together!

Chilly bin is NZ word for Eski which is a container you put your beer and drinks in and load with ice to keep them cold. Hence the word Chilly bin and Eski..Acadaca is what we call ACDC. NZ and Aussies have a shared friendly rivalry and jokingly slag each other off.

Australia and New Zealand are very much siblings. And just like my brother and I, we pick on each-other all the time. But if anyone else does, we back each-other up, no questions asked.

Fosters is an American style beer, invented by 2 Irish guys, made in Australia, by a Japanese company for the English market.

The reaction video title should have been " Young Australians explain Australia". That would prepare you for the unintelligent and terribly articulated opinions we were exposed to. I felt my IQ drop just listening to their answers

Am an Aussie with arachnophobia. I stay inside a lot. If I'm going out into the bush, I usually wear peppermint oil like strong perfurm. And I have a spray bottle of it mixed with water and vinegar that I spray on my window sill. It deters em. And that's how I deal with bugs. I just don't.

5:35 Bin Chickens mate.😂 and as of Fosters we don’t even have it, it’s originally brewed in Australia but it’s sold overseas now. We more commonly have other beers under the “fosters group” fosters is pretty much the sh!t beer for us. “Acca Dacca” AC “acca” DC”Dacca”

Esky is a car fridge. That's the name of the original producers here so it became the generic name. The colloquial name in NZ is a 'Chilly Bin" Chilly meaning cold.

Acadaca. Some people think Aussies shorten letters in words, but we actually shorten how words are said by removing pauses where we can. Acadaca flows better than AC/DC, removing the pause between the C and D, and so is easier/quicker to say. Maybe you would check out the YT video called singers you didn’t know were Australian.

In the city or the burbs you would hardly see a dangerous critter, maybe a spider in the burbs.

I live in a more rural town and we have “seasons” for snakes when they are more dangerous- coming out of winter for example you see more aggressive snakes, if you annoy them. My husband delivered gas bottles and pulled the truck up on a dirt road and a big brown snake reared up to waist height and chased him, he jumped to the roof of the truck and then waited until it slid off the back and jumped in the cab, but Aussies will definitely use those stories as pub tales and get a bit of mileage out of them.

Acca Dacca is AC/DC's nickname in Australia. There's a lot of kangaroos in a state park near my house and you can see them as you drive past. We're only 17 kms from the city. 😊🦘🦘🦘
