Hubby and I went to Vivid in 2019 and it was excellent. We live 2.5 hours from Sydney so we stayed for the weekend. There was sooooo much walking...but totally worth it. I think we walked about 10kms each night. The first night we went to the Opera House and Botanic Gardens and the second night we went to Darling Harbour, through Barangaroo and round to the Harbour Bridge. We'd like to go again and get across to Taronga Zoo and Cockatoo Island.

I’ve been to VIVID a few times. Enjoyed it immensely & love seeing it grow. I don’t go every year because I don’t want it to become the norm. Peoples’ creativity is amazing. One year there was a marine theme on the Opera House & it was spectacular! I hope you get to see it one day. This year I’m off to see GLOW at the Sydney Zoo in Western Sydney. It’s good to change things up 😁✌🏼

Melbourne does something similar called White Night. It's a 1 day, all night festival, art installations, music, dancing, acrobats and interactive light exhibits all through the city like you see here. You walk through following a trail like a really long parade. It's freezing, pure mayhem, traffic is gridlock because there's thousands of people walking around everywhere. But it's extraordinary 🌈

Been to Vivid many times. It's incredible! The last couple of years it was cancelled due to covid but it's back this year. There's always so much to see and so spread out that you usually go at least a couple nights to see it all. There's also live music and shows going on for the festival too. It all started off as a way to get people going out more in winter, to support local hospitality industry etc. To increase the winter nightlife and tourism. Now people come from all over the country and the world to see it. 🙂

I think the original concept of Vivid was to encourage people to come into the city at night and boost the economy at a time when it is getting colder and less people are visiting the city. I have been numerous times, the kids really enjoy the interactive exhibits. I recall one particular one where buttons pushed on one side of the harbour change the light display on the other side of the harbour. Very cool. Hope to see you, Ian, down under one day.

yeah the Opera House is an *amazing natural canvas for lighting* (I can't think of any better in the world!?), I _think_ they've only been doing it since about 2013, guessing that's when the tech first became available at that massive level (that's Wikipedia's first mention of lighting display on their Sydney Opera House page). It's amazing how it looks like the Opera House itself is emitting the light, rather than having light projected onto it (you can't really see any other light being cast around it into the sky)

Vivid is FANTASTIC! I go up every year to Sydney for this and it is amazing in person. You need at least 2 nights minimum to see all of the Vivid light sites as there is heaps of them scattered throughout the city. This year's Vivid festival starts on the 27th of May and runs to the 18th June.

With the burning structure - This is a traditional thing they do in Zurich to celebrate the start of spring - They build like a big person structure and they pack the head with fireworks and the quicker it burns indicates when spring will start or something. As for Vivid, pre-COVID, I used to go just about every year and take photographs. I love Vivid. I love the art and light installations. They have food and market stalls in The Rocks. One year I even did The Bridge Climb (climbing over the top of the Harbour Bridge) during Vivid and it was absolutely stunning. I get a bit nervous in the crowds and moreso in this COVID landscape and Vivid could be quite crowded. I’d planned to take my kids in when they got old enough but then COVID kicked in right around the time they were old enough. I have taken them in when they were young but they weren’t as excited as they would be now. I once saw a light projection into the harbour where it looked light a man swimming up from the deep. It was spooky and cool. I know a bunch of great spots to get photos, such as The International Passenger Terminal for cruises for the Opera House and Bridge, Circular Quay train station for Customs House, the foreshore for the MCA… basically though, you can just wander through most parts of the CBD and just take in the vibe and the views. I love Vivid.

I haven’t been for a few years but I love Vivid Sydney. It’s a freezing time of year to have it but they say it’s to bring a bit of life to the city in winter. It’s absolutely spectacular and I love how it extends right through the city with many displays and also now into the suburbs too. If you can’t face the crowds you can get excellent vantage points just standing on the harbour foreshores and watching a broad view of all the lights.

the first time i visited sydney was in the mid 1960s as a kid. we went to the opera house but i dont think it was finnished. what impressed the hell out if me at that age were the prison guards at longbay patrolling the walls with sub machine guns. what you really need to take the family to if you visit is the "cross", a great family outing but you have to go at night.

It got that bad i took my son out of the pram and put him on my shoulders and used my pram as a ram! I tripped up many people that night and one guy turned around ready to fight! Yes winter approaches. Had first snowfall above 1200m just before Mother's Day at 6th to 7th May. In Victoria, not sure about NSW probably too as it was cold centred air east of Tasmania that brought ir. Normally mid June is official start of ski season, but possibly this year might even come by end May. But there are prior times that weather reversal changed similar clearly conditions to delay to start July. Must wait to see.

I have only seen Melbourne do this in person. I have watched Sydney many times on TV. I was born in Sydney and they do have some great things to light up. It will always be my City but I will never go hame again. I loved the bridge, the opera house and the Harbour. Darling Harbour is beautiful but driving through Sydney is painful. Melbourne isn’t much better but my daughter loves to drive there at night. Adelaide is the only City that was laid out perfectly in a square grid. Leaving room to later widen roads. Years ago even the buses got my attention. When they stopped the front corner with the door lowered to the pavement for wheel chair. When I first saw that I thought the bus was going to fall on us, it didn’t. I miss the trams in Melbourne. There are so many iconic buildings they light up there. You need to go to I think Toronto Zoo at Christmas. Every night they have amazing ice sculptures with lights inside them.. Canada is really beautiful at Christmas and much closer to you.

This was big when I went in about 2012 which I thought was huge, but 2019 blew it away. It looks really cool, and I'd love to see it, not sure if I'd fly over (From Perth) just for this though. If I had to go for some other reason I would definitely try and arrange the trip for when this was on

We have something similiar in Melbourne called White Night where heaps of attractions and landmarks in the CBD are lit up with displays and lights. Really good free night out also

You should check out more Getaway content. It's the holiday suggestion tv show for Australians by Australians mainly about Australia. Lots of interesting things and places that could help you with ideas if you ever manage to come for a holiday.

Contact photo Ian and Daniella, I am from across the ditch (NZ), but even without the glitzy lights it's a marvelous city and highly recommend it. I wish your family can visit there one day, and bring that awesome father-in-law of yours along for the ride. Tell him that somebody's got to carry the bags and he's the right man for the job. (free ticket of course).

I live near Newcastle just north of Sydney and let me tell you it's beautiful but bloody expensive!!! Make sure if you come out this way you're cashed up.. it's becoming one of the most expensive countries to visit or live in sadly. I grew up here in the 80s oh if only I could go back to then.

Took the family a few years back. Started with a cruise on the harbour, dinner included. That said, you can see it all for free and it is impressive
