Welcome to Band-Maid, this is their first music video. The song was written for them and proved to be very popular on social media, especially outside of Japan. They've progressed some way from that, now writing nearly all their own material, extending their instrumental breaks and generally gaining in confidence and popularity. Here's a track from their latest live DVD from a concert they did earlier this year. "Domination" : kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5PcgnaAo5ulj8k .

@@ChaseCarneson Domination will shock you to see how far they have come from this in 5 years. Thrill is a great rIff and still a favorite for me as it was my first taste, but Domination is a stunner. There are about 30 other tracks that are great to just plain outstanding also. This is a long ride once you start.

A tiny warning about the Line Cube version of 'Domination', the playing is brilliant but the mixing is irritating (to me at least): specifically they've done a fairly efficient job of de-emphasising the guitars. I'm used to Kanami's lead shearing through everything else, and disappointingly it doesn't really do it here. It's still enjoyable, though.

@@ChaseCarneson Since you're hooked ( ;-) ) now, check out how far these ladies have come: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5PcgnaAo5ulj8k (Feb, 2020)! Sai-chan (Saiki) absolutely OWNS this crowd! Miku (po!, rhythm guitar, backing vocals), who could barely strum a chord early on, has become a great rhythm guitarist from studying at the feet of her Sensei, Mincho. And MISA MISA MISA and A-chan (Akane), may be, arguably, one of the best bass/drums duos ever! \m/ And for a different side, check out one of my favorites if you want, Daydreaming: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iHTEloihp66nr7s Mincho has commented that this was one of the most challenging arrangements she's attempted, and that she loves playing it. When they made this video, Miku (pigtails/rhythm/lyricist) doesn't even know how to play the guitar. She was taught by Kanami (lead guitar/songwriter) because early on they've decided that although Miku wanted to be the lead vocalist, she lacked the power for the songs they wanted. So they auditioned from within their company after Akane (drummer) and MISA (bassist) joined. Saiki initially didn't know that they had to wear maid outfits because Miku only told her that they'll be wearing cute outfits. She hated the apron and it was discarded quite fast. The idea was conceptualised by Miku, who was from a failed idol group and she had to work in a maid cafe to make ends meet. She found Kanami first from an internet search. Kanami knew Akane, who knew MISA from music school. They have over 90 songs now and they are all good. Try Play, Dice, Real Existence, Domination (Feb 14, 2020), Onset (instrumental), Alone, YOLO, Rinne, Blooming, When Dragon Cries, Don't You Tell Me, Turn Me On, or any others that your subs and commenters has recommended. You won't be disappointed. Also, they are better live than their studio recordings. Stay safe and keep reacting to BAND-MAID!
@m00hk00h

I knew I would find this comment on this video as well, but that Miku couldn't play during Thrill is wrong! There are no released songs in which Miku didn't play rhythm guitar if there is rhythm guitar in the song. It's true that she couldn't play when the band was founded but she started learning almost immediately after forming the band when the idea of adding rhythm guitar came up. Only during their very first live performances she didn't play (they played live months before they recorded _Maid in Japan_ for which she is credited as guitarist). They initially tried to give the job of rhythm guitar playing to Saiki but it didn't look right and Miku also didn't want another member in the group so she decided to do it herself. What she played in the beginning was simple stuff, mostly barre chords, that pretty much everybody can learn to do within a few weeks with regular practice. Thrill was recorded when she was already playing for over a year (as _Thrill_ is on their second mini album, _New Beginning_, that was released almost 2 years after the first one). Also, she is playing the guitar in the video. It was probably a stylistic choice to have her not play in the group shots and rather concentrate on acting out the singing. You can see her play (and use aforementioned barre chords) when she's in the back- or foreground in the Saiki-shots and split screens with Saiki.
@paullow3377
@paullow3377 4 жыл бұрын
@@m00hk00h Now you're just nitpicking. I know well enough that she started learning immediately. On the professional stage, her level of playing here doesn't even qualify as amateur. Does it really matter whether I said she had a little skill or that she didn't have any at all here?

Big plus point for not making a comment that "it sounds like it could be in an anime".
@Zestrayswede
@Zestrayswede 4 жыл бұрын
I mean he said it could be in a movie... And Band Maid are surely inspired by bands such as Asian Kung-Fu Generation, Flow and Kana-Boon; all of which have made songs used as anime openings, so it's not an unjustified observation.
@JGM0JGM
@JGM0JGM 4 жыл бұрын
@@Zestrayswede I believe it is unjustified in the sense that any song could be used for an Anime, depending on the feel the Anime producer wants. Heck, for example, any Led Zeppelin song could be used for an Anime... but when you hear Led Zep, you don't think "Hey, this could be in an Anime". But if they were from Japan, many people would say that. It's usually just an easy comment people make because they know the music is from Japan, it's almost racist, in a subtle ignorant way. It really bothers me when I hear that because I've heard it for about every Japanese band I follow. Of course, the Anime world is so vast that almost any Japanese band that has some level of recognition has written something for an Anime. Some bands do specializes in that market. There are many bands I've discovered through Anime, hearing a song that I liked and searched who it was from... Scandal (Bleach) and Maximum the Hormone (Deathnote) are two examples. However, now that I've heard the other songs they have written, there is no real difference between the one in the Anime I noticed and other songs they make. To me, it's a meaningless comment that doesn't add anything.
@Zestrayswede
@Zestrayswede 4 жыл бұрын
You make a good argument, my guy, and I couldn't agree more. Was just playing devil's advocate. I mean, shit, anime OSTs have introduced me to jazz (Cowboy Bebop, Baccano, Kids on the slope), irish folk music (Fairy Tail) and even classical music to an extent (Ghibli, One Piece, Nodame Cantabile, Your Lie in April), none of which are stereotypically "anime". Are you thinking of Trigun with that Led Zeppelin remark? 'Cause that anime's OST(well "Never could have been worse" in particular because it sounds like "In My Time of Dying") truly got me to seek out some of Led Zeppelins more obscure songs.

They have over 80 great songs. Thrill is their first official MV but doesn’t make it into my top 40 Band-Maid songs. If you’re still interested, recommendations below. For amazing structured chaos, I like SCREAMING (Live), Blooming (MV), Puzzle (Live), YOLO (Live or MV) and Moratorium (Live, this actually leads directly into Puzzle Mentioned above). Also Secret My Lips (Live or MV). For amazingly written instrumental - Onset (Live) and a perfectly written song - Daydreaming (Live has an extra piano intro by lead-guitarist Kanami over the MV). Choose Me (Live at Zepp Tokyo 2018) has an extra Jazzy intro over the MV. My favorite version of that song. It’s also a good show case of how much fun and energy they still have at the end of a 2-hr, 26 song concert (2 hrs is their norm). For fun on stage, Don’t you tell me (Live), turn me on (Live), Take Me Higher (Live), Freedom (Live). For fun (they formed an alter ego band for April Fool’s Day!), Secret Maiko Lips (MV) and Gion-Cho (MV). For heavy, Rinne (MV), Moratorium (Live), the Non-fiction days (Live or MV), I cant live without you (Live), Dice (MV). For something a little different, awkward (Live), Matchless Gum (Live). Not to be lengthy, but I played a super hot Epiphone Les Paul, through a Dual 12 Wydler Tube Cabinet, then later, moved it to a Sunn 6 10 L Cabinet and Head Amp. Combining this with 70's Counter Culture Pedals, it was the sound that we strived for, so amazingly produced in this composition. And, your are spot on, BAND-MAID, and Babymetal, stand apart. Wow, I didn't know Miku was still LEARNING guitar after having started the band... that's a pretty gutsy move! haha! Gotta say though, with a guitar goddess like Kanami helping her hone her skill, it's no surprise that Miku would end up becoming the beast on it that she is now! Hell, EVERYONE in Band Maid is a fucking beast on their respective roles... I think this song is the first time I've really gotten to hear Misa show off her prowess on bass, and she absolutely doesn't disappoint. And as for Akane, I'd already known she was a natural on drums from the other songs I'd heard (Bubble was the very first Band Maid song I heard, and I found it randomly while looking for new Babymetal songs to listen to, a band I was ALSO brand new to at the time.), but then Freedom dropped like a month or two ago, and holy shit that drum solo... forget epic, that doesn't do it justice. That drum solo is fucking COSMIC. It tipped Akane over the line to being my #1 favorite drummer. In ANY band.

Band-Maid fan here! lol. These ladies are beyond their gimmick. They are top-notch musicians. They are a true rock band and not a corporate creation(like Baby Metal). They formed because of Miku ( founder and rhythm guitarist) wanted to create a band that wore maid outfits to contrast their hard rock sound. She found Kanami(Lead guitarist) on line, Invited her, and she agreed to join. Kanami knew Akane(drummer)and Akane knew MISA(Bassist). That was how Band-Maid was born. After playing a few gigs, Miku realized that her voice, while good, was not strong enough for the sound she was trying to create. She found Saiki(Lead singer) through auditions and the rest is history. (Their meeting up is much more detailed than what I told you but that's the gist of it)Anyways, they are all equally talented musicians(some, like Kanami, Akane, and MISA, have extensive musical training at a young age). They are a joy to watch and listen to. They gave me back my love for Rock music. Their MV`s are good, but they are even better Live (you will have to watch a Live video to believe me). Welcome to Band-Maid. May they Stay Strong and Play Long!

Nice to hear another musician’s perspective. This was early for them (6yrs?), they didn’t write this. They do now, slightly rawer riffs thru their career, then latest album has good variety. They do a great job of making space for mini solos, as well as dueling bass and guitar. The bass has awesome tone always, holds a pick, but tucks it in palm for slap bits and fingerstyles too, check Play live 2018. Drummer always changing the beat, great dynamics, and a few uniquely timed fills. Guitarist writes riffs and trained the founder/singer to play rhythm, trained on the job! She’s gotten good at playing the rhythm role, and writes the lyrics. Then they hired the singer for a “cooler” more rock voice, and for youth (19 in 2013). Japanese female hard rock has been on fire for a decade, getting international recognition finally, even tho very few (but BabyMetal) tried until three years ago. Thumbs up for the prologue alone. I hope you'll also do a live song, because they really shine. The moments when the bassist and lead guitar go back and forth are really enjoyable for me. I've listened to several of their live performances since I last suggested Band-Maid. The official releases tend to be quite scrubbed up, but I still like them because the mixes are spot on. Fan cams all over YT clearly show they kill live, so they're not just the product of a talented producer. One of the things I like most in more recent live performances vs the old music videos is the development of Miku (second singer, founder) as a guitarist. At first she was pretty clearly holding the guitar as a prop, but she's developed into a respectable rhythm guitarist. The bassist, lead guitar, and drummer though... damn they're good. And they're not making "see what amazing technicians we are as we play like robots" music the way some bands can. This is from summer 2019, has lots of songs from their most recent album, and seems unenhanced. MISA on the 5-string bass is just wow, but as previously mentioned... I dig the bass. kzbin.info/www/bejne/l6DEd6uOp7aiZ6s

What you witnessed here was their debut music video. So that way, you'll not only get the live vs recorded perspective, but also see how far they've progressed in the past six years or so. Cheers!

2014 I stumbled onto Babymetal and was astonished, so I went looking for what else Babymetal had to offer and was impressed .. then I went looking for what else Japan had to offer and found so many awesome new bands, including Band-Maid, my absolute favorite of all time (if you continue checking them out you will find out why that I, someone who i sin their 60's and grew up listening to the Beatles, Led Zepplin, The Who, Queen, consider Band-Maid easily the equal of any of them.) Other amazing Japanese bands to check out would be: Wagakki Band, Hello Sleepwalkers, One OK Rock, Kalafina, RAD WIMPS, and a shit-ton more ... and that's just Japan, then we have The Philippines, China, Thailand, Korea, Malasia ... and of course, the best singer in the whole solar-system Dimash!!

Funny. You pointed out most of their trademarks! =D Metal (just one of many fusions they use. Pop, funk, blues...). The crazy bass playing. Everybody shines in different moments. This is just a starter...their very first music video. Its a fantastic song, but technically maybe their simplest. Another early song/video, with punk taste, is Dont let me down. It is often forgotten, because people suggest newer live stuff. I think you should save that for later. Follow the time line a little.. ;)

Welcome aboard, Chase. You are embarking on (along with many others) an awesome hard-rock journey with 5 incredible women. Here's my intro blurb for those who may be new to Band-Maid: BAND-MAID’s songs and sound beat with the heart and soul of rock n’ rollers. But you’ll also hear heavy influences of Punk, Metal and Pop, with nice touches of Blues, Funk and Grunge. Sometimes they use multiple genres within the same song. Their Composition, Execution, Consistency (nearly 100 songs with new album, “Conqueror”), Uniqueness, Charisma, Charm and, oh yeah, Cuteness factor, position them as becoming the hard rock Beatles of our time! In other words, they’re destine for mega-stardom. Each member's personalities are super interesting and their musicianship among the best. Their writing, arrangements and overall sound, especially guitar tones and drums, are kick-ass! Having seen them LIVE, I can honestly say their performance, sound, stage appearance, and band synergy is off the rails spectacular. Band-Maid is the only band in decades where I love nearly EVERY song they’ve done. I have over 50 favorites! "Thrill" (2014) is a great place to start: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i5XWaJppgpJnorM Their later songs drive even more - Rin’ne, Blooming, Moratorium, Domination, Clang, Dice, Spirit, Turn Me On, Fate, Play, Hide-And-Seek, Secret My Lips, Puzzle, Glory, Choose Me, I Can’t Live Without You, and on and on. But don’t miss out on their powerful, beautifully written, mid-tempo songs like Daydreaming, Anemone, Endless Story, PAGE and Smile... or more punky like Don’t Let Me Down and Screaming… or funky like Bubble… or bluesy like The Dragon Cries… or poppy like Start Over… or cultural like the Band-Maiko series! And many are represented with over 25 well produced music videos. kzbin.info Most performances should be experienced from their LIVE concerts such as Tokyo's LINE CUBE SHIBUYA on February 14th (sample “Domination” kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5PcgnaAo5ulj8k), ZEPP 2018, Shinkiba Studio Coast 2017 and some of the better 2019 tour Fan vids. Here’s three of what it’s like to see Band-Maid LIVE at super intimate venues. The first taken by Vladimir Chupin in Hamburg: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lZCUpZttmNmag9E, the second taken by JT Dayo in LA: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aqasinWhdt6Veas, and third, JOSER8845 in LA: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q6S6i6mifKx3idU. If you like Band-Maid, make sure to support them by purchasing some concert tickets, CD, DVD/BD & Merch, etc. bandmaid.tokyo Like most Band-Maid songs, I like them from the get-go but really start to appreciate them after more hearings and seeing their LIVE videos. I'll go back and see an older song like YOLO, Order, Shake That, Freezer, Before Yesterday, Real Existence, Non Fiction Days and Alone, etc. and realize there's no band that can consistently construct and play like Band-Maid. For fun, check out an awesome, little known "Mega Band-Maid Mix" by DJ Ray of some of their earlier stuff: facebook.com/djrayboston/videos/1004709499579009 Band-Maid members are: (Ages are best est.). Saiki Atsumi “Ice Queen" - Lead vocals, arrangements, melodies and High Priestess mediator between the Gods (Band Members) and the masters and princesses (Fans). At 26 and the youngest, “Sensei” (Leader) as Miku calls her, has the last word on many musical decisions. High-heels or sneakers, Sai-chan’s smile melts away the persona. Her charisma, performance and voice focus the experience. Miku Kobato "Small Pigeon" - Rhythm guitar, vocals, lyricist, 28 years old. “Koba”, as Saiki calls her, is the Band founder and a firecracker MC & PR SpokesPigeon, po! Her “Magic Spell Time” charm and energy ignite the room. Kurrupo! No, no, no… KURRUPO!! Kanami Tono “Princess” - Lead guitar, keyboards, 28 years old, is a prolific writer of most Band-Maid material. Kanami (translates “Song Wave”) is a possessed riff-slayer who’s so damn adorable it hurts. The only thing you want from Mincho is more! Akane Hirose "Gorilla" - Drums, 29 years old, band energizer & co-clown with MISA. Achi’s talents include massive consumption of noodles and bananas, of course, (even during performance!) while revolutionizing rock drumming with relentless drive, dynamics and the kick. This “DrumRilla” is the Party! MISA "Assassin" - Bass, 27 years old. A sullen, barefoot, dark spirit driving her 5-string bottom-end to hell and back, off-stage MISA is the band’s goofball ballerina. The Mysterious One literally kills it… every note.. uniting Band-Maid’s world-class rhythm section. A slug of JB, a slight grin, and let the slappin’ begin… MISA! MISA! MISA!

5:46 Funny you would say that. There is a suspense action thriller in production on Netflix called "Kate" in which the band makes an appearance as themselves. We don't have details as to what is in store, but I'm guessing they will be the band playing in a nightclub scene and the music they are playing on stage will continue through a following action sequence, possibly a bar fight. 8:49 It seems there is a boat load of musical acts in Japan struggling to get noticed. Many of them are resorting to gimmicks to stand out from the crowd.

Think of this song as the epicenter of an ever expanding sphere with songs that are heavier, faster, lighter, softer, etc. These ladies are the real deal. Well... yes. Here you have the beginning of Band Maid, they evolve along the years to a more personal and special sound of hard rock near metal but without falling into it (there´s some excepcions of course). Also this video is one of the unique opportunities to see the bass player: MISA dressed as a maid and also the singer Saiki There´s a funny anecdote about this. The band was created by Miku Kobato, the one with pigtails who are the only in the group with a solid music foundation, in fact the lead guitar Kanami was the one who teach her to play guitar, but because Miku is a former maid in a Maid Café (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maid_caf%C3%A9 ) in Akihabara, she cheated the bass player and the singer about the "maid dresses". Just say that she "forgot to mention the issue" to the new members. Saiki simply change the color of the dress, but MISA who aside the fact that she is an impressive bass player, is also surprisingly shy about this and change to a dark dress (and drink beer and whisky on the stage). This song is nice, but not by far representative of the "band maid style". First record was very influenced by the record label, after the success they have a lot more freedom to play the music they want. The drummer Akane is so good that Jimmy Page say after seeing them live "This girl is the reincarnation of John Botham" no less. Anyway, welcome to Band Maid, possibly one of the best hard rock bands in the planet in this decade. Maybe this can be sound like a fan opinion, until you hear them live some more songs.

Came to your channel via Jinjer reactions, but I'm a big fan of these ladies. Great album sound and even better live. Refreshing origins for a Japanese group too. It wasn't label-assembled. Rhythm guitarist (Miku) had worked in a maid cafe and thought it would be cool to have the contrast of a maid rock band. Knew she needed a better guitar player and recruited the lead (Kanami), lead knew a drummer (Akane), drummer knew a bassist (MISA). After starting as a 4, Miku realized they needed a better singer than herself, so they auditioned and found Saiki. Play and Moratorium live versions are great next tracks.

I agree with you, the "rivalry" between Babymetal and Band-maid is really just in the heads of some of their less mature fans. I love both, there's no reason to choose one or the other. Thrill was Band-Maid's breakout video, it went viral in the West without them even knowing it at first. When they signed on with a label, their management held them back for awhile, not giving them free reign. The first time they had total artistic control, from writing and composing to performing and producing, was this one: "Alone" kzbin.info/www/bejne/l6mpZmmfadijn9E. The guitar solo has become legendary, it's not very long but one of the best things you'll ever hear.

"I agree with you, the "rivalry" between Babymetal and Band-maid is really just in the heads of some of their less mature fans." Exactly, and it's usually from Band Maid fan boys who whine that BABYMETAL doesn't play their own instruments, or are not "organic" or some shit like that. Luckily it is a small minority, and if they realized that Band Maid members would not appreciate their fans dissing BABYMETAL, they'd probably stop. Not only is the music different, the concept and product is totally different, it's a case of the proverbial apples and oranges. I love both, for different reasons. That being said, because I'm not savvy musically speaking, if both were playing shows simultaneously in my hometown, I'd probably go to BABYMETAL because I think the show is better. Maybe if I had more musical knowledge, I'd go to Band Maid... not sure... I'm just like the Pope in the Monthy Python sketch.... I don't know anything about art, but I know what I like!

This song is Band Maid in their infancy. Their 1st official video. Kaname, the lead guitarist, had not played hard rock before this band. Miku, the rythym guitarist, was literally wearing the guitar as a prop. 6 years of work, and she is now an accomplished rythym player providing a solid background that allows Kaname to soar with more intricate solos. Saiki, the lead singer, was finding herself, and had not had her polyps removed. Misa had yet to transition to a 5 string bass, and had not put in the hours to perfect slapping, persevering through bloody fingers. Akane, the drummer, was not yet unleashed. The label had not permitted them to write their own songs. To see them in all their glory, check out Rinne or Blooming music videos. Domination, play, moratorium, onset, or anything live. They are at the top of the craft at this moment in time.

People seem to downplay this song a lot because the girls didn't write it and it's "simple" but it really is one of my favorites. All of their music is excellent, of course, but this song truly grabs you. The simplicity makes it instantly catchy and it is one of the better songs to show off individual abilities, with both Miku and Saiki taking turns at lead, MISA showing off her mad bass skillz, Kanami ripping it to shreds as usual. The only one who didn't get a long solo was our favorite drummer Akane, but you get a good sense of the talent of these girls. I personally recommend anyone dipping their toes into Band-Maid to see this first as it gives a good visceral overview of their talent before diving into their more complex and nuanced stuff.

If you're not familiar with Japanese music, they have their own music culture over there. For example, the way they play bass is very, very often slap or some variation of it and they love their funky rhythms and more drive on the bass, the better etc. almost regardless of genre. :)

Oh, and the drummer sings lead on this song *while drumming* ! kzbin.info/www/bejne/r4ebmKN_p66Fb9U
