She was the first female country artist to produce her own music. She was a very intelligent & insightful song writer. She also wrote Fancy , Reba Mcentire covered her song beautifully. Btw this song accurately portrays the rural south back in the 60s 70s , even now

I'd call this song 'country gothic'. She tells a sad story through the conversation around the dinner table. Bobbie Gentry has written the song is about how we don't really listen to each other. The family sits there eating but no one really notices how the narrator is reacting to the sad news about Billie Joe.

Oddly enough, this song isn't really about Billy Joe's death. It's about the unintentional cruelty of every day life. The whole family is just kind of casually speaking about Billy Joe's death around the supper table while the protagonist of the song is obviously effected, but no one seemed to notice. They did make a movie out of the lyrics to this song back in the 1970's called "Ode to Billy Joe" (1976) starring Robby Benson and Glynnis O'Connor. Good reaction.

I was a teenager when this song came out. Nobody then, and nobody now, really knows what she and Billy Joe were throwing off the bridge. It was even speculated that it was a newborn child. Please review George Jones, "He Stopped Loving Her Today". It is 1980"s country song and is sad, sad, sad. Listen carefully to the very first words of the song.

I don't believe this is a real story. Not only was Bobbie Gentry the first woman to write and produce her own country music, she was also a philosopher. This song is about ' unintentional cruelty. The story let's you know the girl is upset about the loss of Billy Joe. But her family doesn't realize it and continues their meal as if nothing happened. Unintentional cruelty.
