I feel that Zach Galifianakis was going for some of that "awkward interviewer" flavor with his "between two ferns" sketches. But Chris did it much better. I like Zach as a comedian and actor, but I'm not a fan of the "ferns" bits; they're too weird and awkward, and usually with a kind of 'edge' to them that doesn't appeal to me. (Others may disagree, and that's fine, I'm just saying what works for me personally.) "The Chris Farley Show" sketches were awkward, but always with a shy, charming kind of ineptitude that Chris pulled off so well.

I went to Marquette when Chris was there in the mid 80's. Lived a few houses down from him. He was on the rugby team and wore a Marquette rugby jacket in the opening scenes of the movie Tommy Boy. There was a local drinking establishment that had an activity known as a naked beer slide. Imagine, or not, it's near closing time, a quite underdressed Farley racing(?) from the bathroom and sliding face first on his belly across the beer soaked floor of the bar. Then put his clothes back on and continued drinking.

This sketch is often considered the funniest in SNL history. This cast contained one of the biggest comedy movie stars in history, maybe the biggest stand-up of all-time, the most versatile comedy TV/Movie star of his time, and multiple other TV and movie stars. And all of them agree that Chris Farley was the funniest guy they had ever met.
@BillGraper11 ай бұрын
When he fell on the table, it wasn't known by the cast that he would do that. That was a natural reaction by the other four. The skit was written by Chris Farley, and not telling them about the fall was genius. You could see them jump, and the look of concern, before they realized it was planned. It was a breakaway table. It looks like cardboard. I don't know if you've seen it yet, but my favorite SNL skit all-time is "Debbie Downer" in Disney World, when Lindsay Lohan hosted. That one has me laughing so hard, I'm crying... even after the 100th view!!! 😂
@drewcliff8211 ай бұрын
Yea Chris played defensive tackle in football in highschool and was actually very good. He just wasn't big enough to play at the next level. His physicality is definitely one of the best things about his comedy. He is about as animated of a human being you will ever see. This one is definitely one of his best. Christina used to be my big crush back in the day lol. She wasn't a cast member but hosted the show on this episode. Each episode has a guest celebrity host so when you see a non cast member in a few skits it's bc they hosted. Hosting SNL has always been a big deal and means you've kind of made it as a star. Next I would reccomend doing Chris Farley "Japanese game show" skit.

The voice is based on Chris' father, who had a tendency to scream into a weird high-pitched pocket when he was super-pissed. The stance is based on a rugby player friend of his named Larry Hill, who played rugby on the outside of his feet, so that his top and bottom halves were staggered rather than aligned. Chris was an athlete for most of his life so even though he was big, he had a LOT of experience being physical. Chris basically did this sketch several times a week for about a year at The Second City Theatre with a lot of people who went on to be on _SNL_ or _Mr. Show_ while studying with the legendary Del Close.
