As the other comments have made you aware by now, this is a cover of the original. David Draimen, the frontman of the metal band Disturbed, is the one singing here. I had heard the original Simon & Garfunkel version a lot growing up and was never a huge fan, but after hearing Draimen's version here it made me realize that I always felt the tone didn't match the lyrics and meaning of the original in a way that made sense to me (Plenty of other people prefer it, this is just how it hit me) Disturbed's cover has become one of my favorite songs. I think with the type of metal music he usually sings, people who don't know Disturbed well can easily forget how classically good David Draimen's vocals are, his control is just crazy to me. Paul Simon, the original writer of the song, actually reached out to Disturbed directly after he saw this performance by email to share his appreciation and let them know that he enjoyed their version of it. Disturbed shared the email on their social with a "IT'S NOT EVERY DAY THAT ONE OF THE MOST PROLIFIC SONGWRITERS OF ALL TIME SENDS YOU AN EMAIL MESSAGE. ALLOW ME TO SHARE WITH YOU THE BRIEF EXCHANGE I JUST HAD WITH MR. Paul Simon HIMSELF!!!! SOMEBODY PINCH ME..." To say they were excited was an understatement haha. Paul Simon later shared the link to the video you reacted to on his own social media saying "In case you missed it, Disturbed did a wonderful rendition of "The Sound of Silence" on Conan this week" and Distrubed wrote Simon back a more personal note: "Mr. Simon, I am honored beyond words. We only hoped to pay homage and honor to the brilliance of one of the greatest songwriters of all time. Your compliment means the world to me/ us and we are eternally grateful." I always love and appreciate seeing the admiration and respect two artists can have for one another. Even more so when, like this, the music they create is vastly different styles from very different eras, and yet connections can still be built between them despite the differences. If you're unfamiliar with Disturbed, you should definitely react to them! Down with the Sickness is probably their most well-known (although if you haven't heard it, I'd recommend the radio edit/non-explicit version) but I'd recommend the song Stricken as a first listen to get a feel for how the band typically sounds compared to this.

Ah me. Maybe I can help clear up some of the misunderstandings/misinformation. "Sound of Silence" was written by Paul Simon during the Vietnam War and released in 1964 by the folk/rock duo Simon and Garfunkel. It was/is an extremely popular and recognized piece for people over 40. The heavy metal band "Disturbed" chose to do a cover of the song and the official music video was released on 12/07/2015. Disturbed totally rewrote the tone and temper of the melody and lyrics. This arrangement was centered around frontman David Draiman and his remarkable voice with a full orchestral accompaniment...the band's drummer plays the tympani. It is David's trademark to start the song in his lower range and jump the octave in verse three. Disturbed totally owns this cover...what you hear nowadays, like with Dan Vasc who you reacted to 3 days ago, is a cover of this arrangement. On the Conan Show live version, 03/16/2016, everything was live, the singer and the orchestra...no soundtrack! That's just how good Draiman and Disturbed are. No one goes away from a Disturbed concert saying the recording was better than the live concert version...No One. The band, esp. David Draiman, make sure that they can do everything live that they record. They use an orchestra, not a recording, for "Sound of Silence" when they are on tour. In my opinion, no one will outdo Draiman in voice texture, range, color, and emotion. Dan Vasc, Tom Ball, and others may want to battle virtuosity, eg. who sings it the hardest or highest, but they have yet to capture the overall beauty, grace, and emotional interpretation of "Sound of Silence" as performed by David Draiman. And yes, when I saw this video for the first time in 2020, Draiman had me at hello. This 71-year-old hippie is now a Disturbed, head-banging, and all, fan. It's more productive and fun to bang my head to the music than to bang my head against the wall in silence.

Well, I guess I’ll talk about how this song, written in the Vietnam era by Paul Simon is still relevant today. We cannot stand silent while others are treated indignantly. We cannot watch as those who want to keep us down or revert to the “good old days” that weren’t always to good. I appreciate your commentary on the production and engineering. I’d like to hear more.

As many have already slammed you for... this song was originally put out by Simon & Garfunkel in the 60's. Also, Paul Simon indicated that Draiman's version was the best he had ever heard and that this was now their song.

Paul Simon likes this version so much, he GAVE Disturbed the song. Said it is theirs now. They make you FEEL the lyrics, not just the musicality of it. Insane. Btw. David did that sick with the flu. Why he is sitting. And he fought against Conan’s insistence they use auto tune.

Yes, this is a cover of the S&G classic. Paul Simon wrote the lyrics. Of course Disturbed is not a "he," it's a "they" - that's the name of the band that David Draiman is the frontman for. And he, with his bandmates and this album's producer, Kevin Churko, created a new version of the song that is worthy of covering. And any number of artists have, in fact, covered this version.

A bit rough. Paul Simon actually liked the Disturbed so much, he told them it was theirs now. If you aren’t familiar with 60s folk music, you may not know, but the reaction is real.
