I saw Elvis Presley in concert on July 20, 1975 in Norfolk Scope Colosseum. I was 18 years old. It was the most amazing concert I have ever been to and I’ve been to several. From the moment he walked out the audience went out of their minds crazy and pretty much stayed that way. My favorite song that day was The Wonder of You. He hit that last note and I thought the Colosseum was going to crumble. What a performer he was!! He sold out that concert so quick he added a night concert which sold out also.

I'm in my early 60s and have loved Elvis and his voice (and his looks) since I first heard and saw him when I was 6 years old. The moment I heard those very first notes, I instantly fell in love with him... not just his voice, but him. It's hard to put into words. He is the ONLY singer (you can include groups and bands as well as solo performers) whom I have ever been able to listen to every day with no limits And he's the only singer that I could listen to any song he sang and like it... even the very very very few songs I don't care for as much. But if he's singing, it's all good. He could have sung the phone book and it would have sounded great. I like and appreciate a variety of genres and singers, and when I'm in the mood I'll get into one or another for a little while and really enjoy it. But eventually I've had enough and lose interest, moving on to something else. Elvis is the ONLY singer I NEVER got tired of listening to! His music and his extraordinary voice reaches inside and touches your heart and soul. If you're an Elvis fan, you get it. If you're not, you'll never understand. There will never be another like him. Btw, Elvis sang and had hits in all five major genres at the time... country, gospel, rock & roll, rhythm & blues and rockabilly... and was inducted into all five halls of fame, along with many others. He's probably the reason why I enjoy all of those genres and more. I didn't listen to anyone else but Elvis until I was probably 14 years old (other than the TV variety and entertainment shows which my mother watched). It's only because of my best friend (who had listened to nothing but Elvis music with me for two years because that's the only singer I listened to) who got me to agree to listen to other music for just one hour a day (and we'd continue to listen to Elvis the rest of the day) that I didn't miss out on all the fantastic 70's music. I'm glad he talked me into that compromise because I believe the 70's was the absolute best decade for music ever. But no matter how many great, incredibly talented artists and groups that era produced, no one compares to Elvis. There's a reason 45+ years after his death he's still beloved worldwide by people of all ages.
@shellygill5029 Жыл бұрын
Elvis sang with a lot of emotion. His influences of Rockabilly, Gospel, R&B etc. can be heard in his vocals; they are evident when he sings. His early music was mostly in the R&R genre but as time passed he evolved to embrace other sounds. He didn't write his own music but chose songs by other artists that meant something to him and he put his spin on them. Many of the songs expressed his inner feelings. There is a large body of work that you need to explore: An American Trilogy (pays homage to his southern roots. 1973 A!oha concert) Tryin' to Get To You (2968 Comeback Special). Just a. Couple of suggestions.

Good reaction and good insights. I would also point out that Elvis arranged that material, that was one of his strengths which does not get mentioned a lot because he just had so many strengths. What he's doing there at the end is borderline operatic. The famous opera singer Luciano Pavarotti once said that if Elvis had any formal training growing up, he may well have been the greatest opera singer of the 20th century. But he was left to figure it out all on his own but it just kept increasing right up until that last painful show or two that you can find on KZbin weeks before he died. His vocal Master at that point was just through the roof. Check out that version of How Great Thou Art if you really want to see him go off and also, by then he's asking that backing choir to do so much, but they had with a few lineup changes mostly been the same group for quite a number of years at that point and they were so tight and they delivered. And I've only been following you for about a week and a half so I can't remember if you have done the 1970 live at Las Vegas performance of Bridge Over Troubled Water. To me this is one of the most stunning vocal displays ever, he is so Dynamic and so soft and going so loud and then back to soft and loud and back to soft and so much soul and so much touch and so much everything about it and then at the end, much like this one, it is quite triumphant. I highly encourage you to check it out.

I had never believed it when my professor in college, both a musicologist and professional symphony musician, himself, told me that he viewed Elvis Presley to be the greatest overall singer of all time. "Why?," "What the hell?," so many of us said? With him first going on to ask what's Frank Sinatra's greatest and/or signature song? "My Way," someone eventually said and then the professor proceeded to show us various polls from over the years which listed Sinatra as the greatest singer ever. Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin were also on top of some, and Elvis, too, on a few. But the point of the exercise was to simply show us Sinatra was considered by many, though it's subjective, to be the greatest. The class then listened to Sinatra's "My Way," and then Elvis' version, back to back. With the room being roughly split as to whose version was better, "which proved what I thought?" But then the professor showed us Elvis rocking out to 'Trying to Get to You' from the Elvis 1968 Comeback Special. With the point ultimately being that regardless of whose version of 'My Way" you preferred, Elvis was right there, totally at home playing in Sinatra's backyard for lack of better parlance. But as to Sinatra playing in Elvis' backyard, he said, it couldn't be done, as he said "[i]magine Sinatra, (who he totally loved) trying to do that rock number?" Then going on to say that he had found no singer who had ever sang more genres, more majestically, than Elvis, & he challenged us to find out for ourselves by looking at his full catalogue of Rock, Pop, Soul, Country, Ballads, Gospel and more. And, when done, I admit I became a convert who was so, so doubtful, at first, I can't even begin to tell you. But from rocking out to 'Trying to Get to You' from that Elvis 1968 Comeback Special, to singing about the dream of humanity coming together with "If I Can Dream," from the same show, I believe you will see what I mean. Elvis even had a voice that could be operatic if you go and listen to 'Hurt' and his version of "You'll Never Walk Alone" will tell you why he has also sold more gospel records than anyone, as well as just tons more, overall. But, with pop and 'Such A Night' to a ballad such as 'They Remind Me Too Much of You,' he did it all, and so, so damn well. While for soul, check out 'Long Black Limousine' or 'You're Wearin' That Loved on Look' which is a bit of another number. Because as Elvis' one album cover says, there's 'Something for Everybody.' Also, and if ultimately you don't think Elvis is the best, that's totally cool as there really is something for everyone!;-) Great channel and I wish you the best!!! ~ Christopher Tyler P.S. Those recommendations are only, quite literally, the beginning!

Yes Elvis was a song ARRANGER. Not a lyricist- he didn’t write songs. He almost never gets credit as a legendary song arranger and director. People either wrote for him or he selected songs from songwriters that he felt he represented him or his vision or that he could elevate. That songwriter was always credited and paid for the song rights and future royalties. Elvis was a master of merging music genres. There was “church” in everything he did. Country in everything he did. R&B in everything he did. And he sounded authentic because he was. He was born in East Tupelo next to cotton fields and his parents picked cotton literally. Poorest of the poor - a gospel and blues hub. As a teen he moves next to Beale Street- legendary Blues Gospel and Jazz neighborhood. He grew up in two “neighborhood museums” of music and he is a product of that world. Elvis didn’t STEAL MUSIC, ELVIS WAS MUSIC. Blood 🩸 , Bones 🦴 , and Music 🎶.

Thank you for this. Every song he did, whatever the genre, be it fast or slow, he sang w-emotion that came from his soul & his gut. Just a note here about 2 of his health issues: he had the genetic condition A-1 antitrypsin which causes COPD/emphysema which began many yrs. earlier & at some point he needed an inhaler to help him breath, so it is miraculous how he managed to belt out those songs w-such power, night after night for so many yrs. He also had painful glaucoma & the mega bright house light & stage lights were hard on his eyes. Yes, lots of perspiration, from a very warm & heavy jumpsuit & all those super hot lights. If you want to hear another powerful song & what his voice was capable of, listen to "Tomorrow Never Comes" at kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5m8pXVtpc-eiZI -- it start slow & subtle but continues to build until that last line which may blow you off your seat.

You should type in Bob Joyce Elvis. I don't know if this man is Elvis, but his voice is exact. Been seen going and coming from Graceland. He said himself that he use to dress in all those fancy clothes and would shake around on stage. He's a preacher in Arkansas. Something Elvis always wanted to do. You have to realize how easy it would have been in 1977 to fake his death with the kind of money he had. He was tired of the life. He wanted a normal life and the only way he could get it was if he was dead.

While I don’t particularly like comparisons, and Elvis certainly doesn’t need them to highlight his amazing skill, but sometimes you have to listen to another version of a song to truly appreciate Elvis’ masterful lyric interpretation and delivery. Here is the Chairman of the Board, Frank Sinatra with his version of What Now My Love. His performance is NOT in Elvis’ league. Frank sings it as a sweet ditty, almost a happy song … with those sad, powerful lyrics, hard to belief Frank got it so wrong. m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/iJrbe4ahpcaZlZY

Elvis was a dichotomy. He was a white guy sining soulfully, but he was also some one who brought forth the plight of the ghetto experience with his song “in the ghetto”. He was beyond all of the hate and vitriol and when asked a political question would say “I would rather not talk about that, I am a singer, we need to stay on that subject.”
