It's always fun to watch YT reactors getting confused with I GOT A BOY. 🤣 If you decide to know them better, the best guide is "a girls' generation guide" by ohwoowoo (someone already posted the link on the comment). @13:53 - You're pointing at Hyoyeon/DJ Hyo, but on the same frame is the SNSD leader - Taeyeon. Yes, they are both part of Girls On Top. ____ btw, if your YT channel is not strictly for MV reaction... you'll enjoy SNSD/GG because they are natural comedian. They have a lot of funny and savage moments. 😂 Anyway, I hope you have more SNSD content.👍

I didn't see anyone mention this, so I'll put it here. Oh!GG is a sub-group of SNSD consisting of Taeyeon, Sunny, Hyoyeon, Yuri, and Yoona. Those five were the only ones of the original group still remaining with SM at the time that song came out.

SNSD is one of the most versatile groups in Kpop. They never do the same thing twice so you will find a ton of different sounds just in their title tracks alone. The fact that you knew parts of some songs even though you had never listened to anything by them gives an idea of just how iconic and legendary they are. I Got A Boy was the first song of its kind, and inspired the "multiple songs within a song" trend that is still common today. It was groundbreaking when it came out, and even more so because the same girls who sang Gee were pulling off such a wacky song and concept. They weren't super involved with the production of their music, but that was common for Kpop groups back then, especially SM groups. Self-producing groups didn't become more of a thing until 3rd-4th gen. Tiffany, Yuri, Sooyoung, and Seohyun have all written lyrics for some of their songs though and Tiffany was the first member to have a self-composed/produced song make it to one of their albums with Villain on their new album, Forever 1 (she and Sooyoung wrote the lyrics too, if you like aespa you'll probably like this one, it's a banger). Many of the members have submitted lyrics/songs for their albums over the years, but they've joked that SM has high standards. They've been able to be more involved with their solo music though, which has been nice to see. Most of them have some kind of credits throughout their own solo discography. They were very involved with creating their newest album as well, so hopefully if they do more group activities in the future, SM will give them more opportunities. Lil' Touch only has 5 members because those were the members still with SM after three members (Tiffany, Sooyoung, and Seohyun) left the company (but not SNSD) after their 10th anniversary. They wanted to release something for the fans, and also emphasize that SNSD as a whole was still 8 members, so they released Lil' Touch as subunit Oh!GG (it's a play on words since oh means 5 in Korean and they also have a song called Oh!). They have another subunit called TTS (TaeTiSeo) made up of members Taeyeon, Tiffany, and Seohyun. They had a few mini albums and focused more on vocals with their songs. They're really good as well. SNSD is a very special group, aside from their roles as members of SNSD, they all have extremely successful solo careers in all aspects of the Korean entertainment industry -- music, variety, dramas and movies, etc. They're very beloved in Korea and are known as a legendary group for good reason. The amount of "firsts" they have, the amount of records they set, you could write an entire book on their legacy and all they've done for the industry and it probably still wouldn't cover everything. I hope you'll look more into them because there is a lot to discover. Their Japanese discography is unmatched.

Yes - I remember it was the second attempt by kpop to enter the American market (Wonder Girls Nobody was the first). Aside from the occasional anime theme song, the US just wasn't ready to fully embrace any Asian music. But that was the reality for so long as far as foreign music. Even the so-called "Latin Wave" of the late 90s - Ricky Martin, Mark Anthony, Enrique Iglesias, Shakira - only broke through because they were able to record music in English.

The saying, “When Taeyeon hates a song, it gets viral” started from Gee. She hated the cutesy concept so much she cried about it😭 Also, you being familiar to ‘The Boys’ is prob bc most SNSD songs are used as a rite of passage for new ggs today. It was played literally everywhere as well when it was released (it’s the song that introduced me to kpop). Still gets played today along side ‘Into The New World’ (their debut song). A lot of ggs today practice to it when they were trainees and covers them in special stages.
@ushijimawakatoshi14292 жыл бұрын
I Got a Boy is the most... Experimental(?) Song that they did. Literally a mashup of like 5 different songs but it's only one song. The Boys is then one of the most vocally heavy songs of SNSD. Literally amazing. And Gee is like the most iconic song of Kpop considering most of the girl groups now knows this song. Actually the Into The New World is the song that's like a requirement for almost all the girl groups to know, I even heard that almost all of them at least practiced it's choreo before even debuting. Cause literally, aside from the fact that it is vocally challenging, performing it with high difficulty choreography makes it harder to perform.

The Maknae line (Yuri, Sooyoung, Yoona, and Seohyun) are all actresses and quite a few young fans know them for being actresses and not idols. Oh! GG is the 2nd subunit of SNSD, they are the 5 girls that remained at SM. The first unit is commonly known as TTS (TaeTiSeo) which was Taeyeon, Tiffany, and Seohyun. As far as recognizing The Boys, Kep1er did a cover of it on Queendom and The Boyz have done a cover of it with full choreo a couple of times?

The reason you recognized part of "The Boys" is probably because you have seen at least one or more 3rd or 4th Gen groups perform that part on a music show or special stage or in a 'competition' show. There are several reasons for this: 1) it was a big hit (which tends to be the case for practically every SNSD song) and 'new' groups usually perform a cover of a 'classic' as a rite of passage early in their careers. 2) it was released globally, not just for the Asian markets (I THINK it was the first time a K-pop song was released worldwide) with complete English lyrics (as well as Korean), which helped K-Pop become the phenomenon it is today, 3) A significant part of SNSD's discography/choreography was integrated into the training curriculum of every 3rd and 4th Generation girl group (regardless of the agency) because they were acknowledged as the 'gold standard' of girl groups. Practically ALL 3rd and 4th Gen groups have learned to perform SNSD's debut song "Into The New World' because its combined vocal and choreographic arrangement is so demanding. (ITNW also has the singular distinctions of having become an international anthem in protests against corruption and demonstrations for social equality, and for being popularly described as Korea's "2nd National Anthem"). In the 10 years before SNSD debuted in 2007, 21 girl groups debuted. 1/3 of those lasted just two years or less, 1/3rd made it to 4 or 5 years before disbanding and the remaining 1/3rd were still in their 3rd or 4th year of existence. In the 10 years after, about 100 *I think...it's hard to keep track*...girl groups debuted, because of SNSD's example. Look for any current girl-group interview where they are asked who inspired them, and the answer is always SNSD. Even three of BTS' members said that the first album they bought with their own money was "Girls' Generation". Your selection is but a taste of their versatility and variety. They weren't the first to do "cute" or "bubblegum pop' or to incorporate hip-hop, or rap, or rock in their songs and performances, nor the first to present 'sexy' or 'girl-crush' images, but they did it all )and more) better than anyone else. One of their popular nicknames is "The Queens of Concept" because once they broke 'big' with Gee ( and then Oh!"), every comeback was something new and different. Before SNSD there had neve3r been such a large (9-member) girl group before, and many K-Netizens, upon learning of their formation before they debuted, dismissed the whole idea as crazy and doomed to disbandment in a couple of years, assuming they would succumb to infighting and jealousies, and/or that, outside of whoever would be the main vocalist and main dancer, the rest of the group must be "talentless" trainees being used to justify the 'gimmick' of a large group. Such critics soon learned that SNSD actually had TWO 'Main Vocalists" (Taeyeon and Jessica), and three "Lead Vocalists" (Tiffany, Seohyun and Sunny) who were as good as or better than ANY 'Main Vocalist' of any other group. Similarly, SNSD had THREE "Lead Dancers" (Yuri, Sooyoung and Yoona) as good as any other group's "Main Dancer" , while SNSD's "Main Dancer" (Hyoyeon...who you recognized from Girls On Top/ "Step Back") would soon prove she was (and still is) simply the BEST female dancer in K-Pop. And importantly, in addition to all this talent, from the very start, despite all their personal solo ambitions (which they would begin to realize even as they performed as a group) SNSD were thoroughly committed to each other working as a team above all. Now its a fact that that commitment to the group was shockingly disrupted when Jessica's ambition to be a fashion designer came into conflict with the group's schedule right as they were about to embark on their 4th Japanese Tour ( their biggest to date). The details have never been discussed by SNSD or SM, but basically Jessica was expected to put her plans on hold (or maybe drop them altogether) which apparently she couldn't do ( it's possible at that stage she had legal commitments to her business partner that put her in an impossible position)...so she was 'kicked out' of the group. In the week that the news broke of Jessica's dismissal, SM shares lost 16% of their value. It was an event that would have broken any other group...but not SNSD. After the saddest performances ever seen in K-pop without Jessica, (and the most EPIC performance of their debut song ITNW, sung as a ballad, at the Tokyo Dome that made 50,000 fans cry their eyes out) SNSD returned with a new album and 'triple -title release ( Holiday/YouThink/Lionheart) to reclaim their status as Korea's #1 girl group. In 2017 Tiffany, Seohyun, and Sooyoung did not renew their SM contracts, and joined other agencies to pursue their own ambitions..Tiffany as a solo singer/songwriter in the US, Seohyun, and Sooyoung as TV and movie actors in Korea. Again this kind of departure would typically result in a group's disbandment...but again, not in SNSD's case. "The Nation's Girl Group", the "Queen's of K-Pop" had established their own identity...effectively they were no longer an "SM group", they were simply "The Legendary SNSD". Note that the mebers who stayed with SM (Taeyeon, Yuri, Yoona, Hyoyeon and Sunny) released 'Lil-Touch as a SUB-UNIT of Girl's Generation called Oh!GG ( named by Hyoyeon, actually); "Oh" is Korean for '5' and GG stands for Girls' Generation, of-course. Even as the members all pursued their various solo endeavors over these last 5 years, they each still formally identified themselves as "SNSD' s Taeyeon", "SNSD's Yoona", "SNSD's Seohyun", et cetera, and always spoke about getting together again...and as their individual schedules allowed they frequently did 'get together in way or another. Sooyoung and Hyoyeon appeared in Tiffany's solo MV "Teach You", Seohyun performed with Taeyeon on-stage when she had a solo fan meeting, Sooyoung and Seohyun 'crashed' one of Tiffany's concerts on her solo tour...they each made sure to show up to support each other's performances and events whenever they could...and they all gathered together every year to celebrate Tiffany's birthday (August 1) and the date of their debut (August 5). Their 15th Anniversary comeback single Forever1, with full promotion and a complete album demonstrates that their commitment to their group, and to their fans, is as strong as ever, and an affirmation of their motto "Girls Generation forever!" Oh yes...their MVs are great, but you really can't grasp how good they are until you see their live concerts...it's a whole other level of excellence. AND...in closing, they are also widely regarded as the FUNNIEST girl-group as well ( they known as the Queens of Variety, in addition to all their other titles). There's a common expression that summarizes SNSD pretty well, which is..."If you don;t know SNSD, then you don't know K-Pop". Sorry this is so long, but they've been around a long time and done so much ( I could have written a whole lot more). Enjoy.

So, SNSD is short for Sonyeo Sidae, which basically translates to Girl's Generation. You'll see that "SN" in other girl group names - WJSN (Cosmic Girls), GWSN (Girls in the Park), the Korean name for LOONA translates to This Month's Girl and has the same "sonyeo" in there, and I'm sure there are others I can't think of right now.

Also, as to the reduced number of members in the last video - originally, there were nine members. At some point, under... shall we say... less than ideal circumstances (I don't really know the details, a proper SONE could tell you more), one member left both the group and SM. Some time later, I believe around the 10-year anniversary, there was a time for contract renewals. Some more members left the company to go their own way, but with the idea that the group would remain and potentially promote together again (their recent comeback is a fulfillment of this). The last song you watched, I believe, was a sub-unit consisting of the members who remained with SM, calling themselves Oh!GG.

SNSD = So Nyuh Shi Dae which is the romanized phonetic translation of the Hangul/Korean for Girls Generation" (A 'sonyuh' is a girl and 'shidae' is the 'Generation' part ). SoNyuhShiDae is also shortened to "SoShi". The fandom are called "SONE" as-in, 'So' and 'One' (sowon) which is Korean for "wish" (a key word in their Genie/Tell me Your Wish hit song) but also represents "One with Soshi" which then connects with their current comeback title "Forever1" which is another English/Hangul play on words because SNSD's group motto is ( and always has been, and always will be): "Right Now It's Girls' Generation! In the future; Girls' Generation!, Girls Generation forever!"...and thus "Forever (1) One" Note: When informed that their group name would be So Nyuh Shi Dae the members were crestfallen, because they wanted a 'cool, English' name' ( the name was chosen by an SM employee, who got the idea from a popular 1980's song titled 'Girls Generation' , which SNSD then recorded with the original composer/singer guitarist's approval. In fact he was so enthusiastic about SNSD's version that they performed it together on stage (and IMHO SNSD's version is MUCH better than then original). .

Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga and, yes, Psy were also up for the award and a lot of the Western audience didn't quite understand (SNSD still wasn't that well known outside of Asia, compared to the other nominees.) Winning the award, however, was a big boost to the mvs views on KZbin, as viewership jumped by 327% in just five days following the win.

What can you say about Gee except that it is THE Kpop national anthem. Pretty much every girl group covers it or works on it in practice. It was so iconic that it set a fashion standard in Korea for young girls with all those pastel colored pants. In 2016 it was voted by a lot of people in the Kpop industry as the top Kpop song of the past 20 years - and it was a huge hit in Japan. Btw- I Got A Boy won the You Tube Music Video Award for 2013 - and the video was choreographed by Nappytabs - Napoleon and Tabitha of So You Think You Can Dance.
