Honestly, I would say the American Idiot album was the quintessential album for the millennial generation and living during the 00s as it was really a perfect commentary of the times.
@hanskneesun123

They got a bit of backlash from generation x who had been given Basket Case and Dookie, many claiming that they had sold out, that the album was too commercial and too 'on the nose' considering what was going on in America, but honestly it's just another example of the previous generation not wanting the next generation having good things.

Younger millennials, maybe. Us older ones considered much of it way too commercial and in-line with the other blasé crap that was out at the time.

This song came out shortly after my husband of 17 years told me he was in love with his girlfriend and they were having a baby. I was suddenly a single mother of 3 kids with no idea how to navigate the dating world. I was in a bad head space and this song was my jam.

I grew up in the 60's/70's. I raised my 3 kids during the 80's-2000's. It was during the years that I was driving my teenagers to all their activities that I was introduced to GreenDay. I have been exposed to A LOT of REALLY GREAT music over my lifetime and I can honestly say that GreenDay's "American Idiot" album is my all time favorite! The entire album is a Rock Opera telling the story of one young man's journey to adulthood. You really need to react to every song on the album-- in order. But be sure to react to the official videos on the songs that do have a video because they provide a lot of context. You will be amazed!

Green Day is my #1 top favorite band solely for being the reason i got into playing instruments and music as a whole. Discovered their American Idiot album at 12 years old back in 2008. I knew music was what I wanted to do from then on. I didn't see them in concert until August 2021 with Weezer and Fall Out Boy. I got pit tickets and it was worth every penny. It was a childhood dream come true seeing these guys up close. Their rhythm section and the harmonies are top tier in their field and don't get enough credit. Even though a lot of their recent stuff doesn't hit the spot for me, they have so many gems from the 90s and 2000s that still hold up well today.

Not only did the American Idiot album - a concept album at that - win the Grammy for Best Rock Album (and was nominated for Album of the Year), but it even ended up becoming a successful Broadway show that won a couple Tony Awards as well. Granted, they were only minor technical awards but still. Billie Joe himself later played the musical's lead character towards the end of its run on Broadway.

Loved this when it came out and as I’ve got older I really appreciate the lyrics and the meaning behind them. It shows what great musical craftsmen these guys really were. I still give this one a play when I’m cruising in my car. Another great band from back in the day is INXS …..you might want to have a listen to ‘Never Tear Us Apart’ one of their classics. Right up your alley I’m guessing. Anyway, thanks for this one Britt, really enjoyed your reaction. Cheers, Rod and Kaz. 👍🏼🎸

It's funny you think that he looks so young there but when I was growing up or actually really more in my thirties and stuff, I remember when they're first stuff started coming on MTV and it was several albums before this. The American Idiot album is incredible, and you should listen to the title track from it, it's pretty incendiary for sure. The production values on this album is better than anything that came before and it's quite impressive. The essence of this song itself is so haunting that in my Honky Tonk band, we used to just start playing it and we would take it from our normally loud rocking out into a really quiet kind of Backwoods almost Bluegrass valid, and make it really atmospheric with really beautiful soft harmonies and just wait to see when the audience would finally recognize that it was actually this Green Day song, laugh. It always got really good audience response but for me, I came to love our version of it and it just showed me how beautiful the song was at its core, that it could be translated into other genres and still work quite well.

From Wikipedia regarding American Idiot: "A concept album, dubbed a "punk rock opera" by the band members, American Idiot follows the story of Jesus of Suburbia, a lower-middle-class American adolescent anti-hero. The album expresses the disillusionment and dissent of a generation that came of age in a period shaped by tumultuous events such as 9/11 and the Iraq War." Try the studio album for a truly sonic experience.

If you want so really deep lyrics, you should listen to Blue October if you haven't already. I would recommend the song Fear but the video not the live version, then do the live version so you can see just how powerful the singers voice is. There are a ton of other good Blue October songs as well, their most popular is probably Hate Me, which is very good.

If you can put up with 9 minutes of a single song ( To be fair it does not feel like one song. Because it switches up tempo and style 3 or 4 times in the middle of the song)....... Pardon the side track here but I just realized there's 2 Green Day songs that fit that description that I just gave. The song I started to mention is called Jesus of Suburbia. It is now and will probably forever remain my favorite Green Day song. And the music video for it is one of the best videos ever made. The other 9 minute song that I like almost as much it's on the same album and it's called Homecoming And it is absolutely worth a watch and a listen as well.
