It's our Indo-European roots calling my brother. Heilung's rituals are meant to heal and unite by amplifying history. They start every performance with this: Remember, that we all are brothers All people, beasts, trees and stone and wind We all descend from the one great being That was always there Before people lived and named it Before the first seed sprouted

Been luck enough to see them twice so far. Each time has been a stunning experience. They refer to their shows as rituals that the audience is a part of and they often invite local indigenous people to perform thier cultural songs/ceremony to be respectful of the native land they are performing on to help open and close the show.

Heilung is modern music blending multiple genres and techniques not native to Nordic countries to interpret Iron Age materials for a modern revisionist audience. Please do not confuse this modern expression with actual music that would have been experienced and enjoyed by actual Vikingr. Heilung's music can be an amazing, talented, and even spiritual experience, but please do not confuse it with actual historical music.

@@voodjin Hey, guess what? It's the internet, baby! Anybody can say anything they want. Even a band can say anything they want about themselves. Except, oops, notice I DIDN'T say anything about what the band says. What I did say was not to imply that Heilung's music, awesome though it is, was a historically accurate representation of music from the historical period and traditions that would have been listened to and enjoyed by the Vikingr. Which is kinda the imposition your original comment made it out to be. Yes there are historical references and all, but not even the instruments and vocal techniques they primarily use are period accurate for the Norse peoples. If their music makes you feel empowered or invokes a spiritual experience for you, that's great, that's what it's supposed to do! Inspired by, yes honey, but drawn from, no, it's really, really not. One thing I think we'll agree on though, it IS a gorgeous experience for the ears.

Kai ( throat singing tattooed Shaman.) joined their Pagan community group. Maria grew up in Norway near a Long Boat museum, & took part in re enactments. Chris is Danish. Kai German. They made their own clothes & instruments, & honour the animals with them. We did all live in harmony once, with each other, the animals & the Earth. Our Ancestors want peace. I haven't read through all the comments but I can tell you they make their own instruments. Made of real skins, bones, hair ect.. I believe they originally all met at Viking age re-enactment camps and became friends. Kai (the throat singing guy and Tattoo artist and real life Shaman) wanted to record some of his poetry and Christopher Juul wanted Tatoo's and had a studio so Heilung was born. They 1st performed Live at Castlefest and it is the most epic and magical thing I have witnessed (not in person I WISH) You need to check it out(Lifa Full Show). You have to be there! On 7th September they play again in Czechia (formely Czech Republic, center of Europe) during a festival in city called Trutnov. So I'm going! ☺ On top of that, there will be another band playing, called Zeal & Ardor. I didn't know them, so I played 5 songs on the KZbin, felt totally in love since the first song, now I've heard their 2 latest ablums and I don't know which of these 2 band excites me more. 😂 Anyway, if you want to check Zeal & Ardor, check their song Death To The Holy (official clip has awesome video too). Heilung is awesome. They base their music on Germanic/Nordic history, but it seems to hit all of us in our souls, no matter where we come from. "One with nature," YES! The male main singer, Kai Uwe, writes most of their stuff and apparently he often finds his inspiration out in nature, doing 'spirit walks' and such.

Heilung came together out of a mutual interest in Dark Age re-enactment; they did initially make their own instruments as well as their own costumes. They sing in a variety of old Northern European languages including Proto-Norse. I think the disclaimer about political movements is there because white supremacists have unfortunately tried to co-opt Germanic paganism and traditions. The non-terrible people are put in a position where they have to actively distance themselves.

Amazing vibe, and the drums shake you to the core. Amazingly they are coming to NZ this year, so I jumped on those tickets. I bought Hellblade II primarily because they involved Heilung for the soundtrack. Heilung (pronounced 'Hi-lung') don't do gigs or concerts. They are rituals. I was at this ritual in London and it was an amazing, spiritual experience. Most bands have recorded music playing before they come on stage, Heilung have nature sounds playing - wind rustling through trees, bird song and distant howling of wolves. Before they start, someone sages the stage, gear and audience. The band walk out and chant to open the ritual: Remember, that we all are brothers All people, beasts, trees and stone and wind We all descend from the one great being That was always there Before people lived and named it Before the first seed sprouted

They did all this only using hand made ancient acoustic instruments. They are trying to reach their roots so it's a portal to another time more than another universe. Even the language they use is not a modern language it's a language reconstructed from ancient sources of their culture. the female singer (who here impersonates a seer) is from Norway the guy with the horns is from Germany and he not only impersonates a shaman he is a shaman and the guy who's playing that strange string instrument is from Denmark they are the members of the band and responsible for the music and the lyrics of all their albums. By the way I'm glad you understand music and you are open minded. You can watch In Majan live from Lifa some years ago It's something and the video of Hertan from Wardruna.
