The unlikely duet is the cool shock factor of this performance. Illustrating the kind of person each of these men were. They loved and appreciated all performances and musical styles. Many think the extremes don't appreciate the other, but it shows the love for music and the love for pure talent. Extreme opposites singing together the same song. Love it! Music is universal.

Pavarotti and Brown were two of the greatest artists of the last century. Both men were in their late 60's or early 70's during this concert. I sang with Pavarotti at Carnegie Hall in the 80's when he was still in his prime. One of the greatest experiences of my life. I sat next to him and discussed vocal technique during breaks in the rehearsals. Learned more in the 2 weeks I worked with him than in 20 years of studying voice. I loved your reaction to both voices!

Luciano Pavarotti was an Italian operatic tenor and basically one of the greatest voices ever. I would definitely recommend you listen to his live version of "Nessum Dorma" and then be prepared to melt. After that if you want to see/hear another outstanding crossover you have to do the greatest one that's ever been conceived "Barcelona" by Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballé. As great as this is, it has nothing on Barcelona.

I grew up listening to JB since the mid-60's. Went to three of his concerts.... great show and talent. James was known as the hardest working man in showbiz. You should see his dance moves from when he was younger. Pavarotti was a long-standing part of the "The Three Tenors."

When Pavarotti was alive, since 1994 he had organized a musical event that was almost annual and was called "Pavarotti & Friends". The purpose of this event was charity for the various needs that gradually arose in the world. Many famous Italian artists were invited to this event, but also many international stars. None of them has ever said no to Pavarotti (how could one say no to Pavarotti?). This with James Brown is a performance that was part of one of those "Pavarotti & Friends" and the esteem and respect that everyone had for Pavarotti was infinite, as demonstrated by the attitude of a sacred monster like James Brown.

“This is the duet I didn’t know I needed in my life.” Exactly. It shouldn’t work, but it works beautifully. It only works because the two are open-minded enough to try it and strong enough to check their egos. Look at James Brown’s million-dollar smile when Pavarotti takes over HIS song! They don’t even speak the same language, but you feel like that kind of openness and trust could make them great friends. It’s enough to give you hope for mankind.

This collaboration between Pavarotti, one of the most beloved and greatest opera singers ever, and James Brown, the God Father of soul, who I was raised on, brings tears to my eyes. One, because the song is so gorgeous and I've loved it my whole life, and two, because I am deeply touched by the love in this cultural meeting and the respect Pavarotti has for James Brown and the honor paid to James Brown culturally by Pavarotti and the Italian people. This is living art. I feel this collaboration, it's music and it's mind opening act of social "barrier breaking", in my heart.

My personal favorite song of James Brown has always been "Sex Machine". It always seemed, to me anyway, as if James was just having fun when he'd perform that song. Like a lot of his songs, this song seems to practically jump right out of the speakers coming right at you. And, it was like that from the very beginning of the song all the way to the end of it!

I believe Pavarotti wrote the Italian part himself. Either way, it's amazing how two so completely different voices can complement each other so well. Pavarotti did some other ones with other singers. One of them was Sting and I don't think it worked as well. L'uomo rincorre il potere ma lui non sa che il grande limite ha da essere come si fará. Nel palmo stringe un ‘idea che non vive, che nella sua fantasia… volle se non si accorge che poi nulla ha piú senso se si vive solo per sé. Man runs the power but doesn't know great limits has to be how it will be done In his palm he holds an idea that doesn't live in his imagination… he wanted If you don't notice that then nothing makes sense if you live only for yourself

I was going to recommend this to you! Long time pro-musician here. What an unlikely pairing of two great singers with such a remarkable difference of styles! My first thought was, it's a mismatch who ever thought of this. Pavarotti's voice is not suited to James Brown's music, it takes time for his voice to resonate. Was I wrong!! This become one of my favorite videos ever!! Greatness is greatness and you can see the respect they have for each other's talent.

Ha, love your energy and delight for sure. It's so great to have these two seemingly opposite genres come together by two masters of their own genres. Yes of course James Brown was the Godfather of Soul. I know you tend to stick to the live stuff, and so there is some really great footage of a very young James Brown. Papa's Got a Brand New Bag is the one that is probably most popular and would just take a little searching on KZbin, I believe it's in black and white. So you can hear his voice actually is stronger than this when he's younger but he does all this while he's doing the most mind-blowing dance moves and legwork, especially for the time. It just seemed inhuman at the time and yet he did it all with so much soul. He is an incredible force of nature for sure.

Yes, you are correct, Pavarotti's instrument was his voice, and yes, James was the Fathrr of soul, so what a duet! The night Martin Luther King was assassinated, James went ahead with his performance, but the Mayor had to pay a large fee! The result was that the town did not get burnt down, and there were no riots, as across the rest of America. Lives were saved, the people behaved peacefully, which was what MLK always advocated, and hundreds of millions of dollars was saved.

There are also some amazing duets with Tom Jones taken from his variety show which I think was early 70's (was a baby then so I don't recall them) and probably the same with Cher as she and sonny had a tv show!! And of course in the 80's there were duets with Barbra Streisand, Bee Gees. Yes, Godfather of Soul! Love James but hadn't seen this with Pavarotti, a world renowned opera singer. If you get a chance, check out Janis Joplin, Ball & Chain, Try, she was called by some as a female James Brown...I think you'll like her

One comment before I even start and I have seen this video before, Luciano Pavarotti, considered one of the greatest opera singers of the 20th century, was also really cool because he did stuff like this with people like James Brown, and he expressed admiration saying that he wished he could do what James Brown could do but he never could, but he thought that James Brown could possibly do what he did if he'd had the right training. Similarly, and I love this, and I know that you have been smitten by Elvis Presley, at what point he said that if Elvis had had real vocal training growing up, he may well have been the greatest opera singer of the 20th century. Wow. But yes, as others have said, his short excerpt from an opera called Nessun Dorma (the name of the excerpt) has been extremely popular for people to react to for the last year or two. It's short enough and most people don't even know what the story is because of course it's in Italian, but it's just so dramatic at the end and it shows you what somebody like Luciano Pavarotti is capable of in terms of performance and emoting and just being a master and all that. It really is goosebump-inducing.

It's Italian....the concert is called Pavarotti and friends. So, James Brown is one of the guests, and performed only this one song, while of course Pavarotti performed the whole show.

James Brown was one of Elvis' best friends,. It was known that he and Elvis would get together for hours on end and just sit and enjoy each others' company and sing gospel songs until the early morning hours.
