It's actually a lot more complicated than that. It's neither a genre nor an industry. But, obviously, lots of people use it to mean either the one or the other. In the widest sense of the word it means Korean popular music and that encompasses music by singer-songwriters, which is extremely popular in Korea, and also hip-hop music, for example. What a lot of people in the west mean when they say K-pop is actually considered 'Idol music' in Korea, which many consider to be an industry. loved the reaction, thanks for no cuts between the songs either we like a raw reaction :) BTS consists of 3 rappers 4 vocalists they all can dance however some specialize more in contemporary or street dance. I recommend you check out BTS ON Manifesto film, there are 2 versions of ON the music video and the one i just suggested (more of a one take focuses on their choreography) might also not have as much views as their other MV's bc there are two versions that came out so it kind of splits in half. As for the music genre, they were first covered as K-pop (korean pop) but proven to display multiple genres in their songs/albums so theres a popular term we use as BTS-pop. :) really liked the reaction i hope you react to more of them because theyre simply 7 humble dudes that came from nothing and display nothing but hard work and talent! "IDOL" is a crazy music video for a reason. This song has SO many meanings and it is Korean culture heavy! (Which is awesome!) The basic meaning is that they’re confronting their haters and that in the process it doesn’t matter what they say because they love themselves and are authentic to who they are. As for the Korean references, there are many things but one of them is that you can see in the video a graphic of a rabbit on the moon which is a folk-tale in Korean culture that having rabbits on the moon signifies a long and bountiful happy life. Another example is when they go “Mwol eojjeogo jeojjeogo tteodeureodaesyeo” , which sounds like just a bunch of sounds their making but actually its not it means like “BLAH BLAH BLAH! What are you saying even?”, which is taking a jab at their haters. Another one would be when they would “ELSOUUU” or “URSOOO” this is taken from Pansori, a story telling performance made through singing and drums and when ELSOOU is said in Pansori it is for celebration, meaning that BTS is celebrating who they are and where they’re from and that they love themselves.

Also, BTS is a lot more than generic kpop. Just to clarify, BTS don't really fit the boyband stigma. Unlike the stereotypical boyband, BTS: write their own music; are not manufactured; do not have a targeted demographic; lyrics are based on Jungian psychology, Herman Hesse, renaissance art & classicals. Songs are mostly about mental health, self-love, empowerment etc. They even gave an speech at the United Nations for their UNICEF "Love Yourself" campaign. As an old Army I feel so bad with other Armys who say BTS is more than kpop or is not kpop. First of all, BTS IS KPOP, there are 7 years of music career where they haven't that privilege of popularity until the last years. They are such a huge importance in Korea and kpop to say that they are more than that, just bcs you say they write and produce their songs and express important messages? Well there are a lot of groups that produce their songs themselves and share such good messages for the society not only BTS. The fact that BTS attend to American awards or American stuff it's because they gained a lot of fans in the past years. Also when they did that speech doesn't mean they are something special and different from other groups, and please do not misunderstand me, I mean that they did it because apart from being members of UNICE they are a huge influence for Korea and kpop (bcs for example Red velvet performed in North Korea and that's a huge part in kpop and Korea history, you know?). The fact they get all their popularity and change the history of kpop does not mean their are more than kpop. 7es they have money now to spend on their MV’s but when they started the company they are with was so broke that they used staff members as extras in their videos. They are unique in the industry as they are not straight Kpop. They write and produce most of their own music and they cover multiple genres. Their music has a message, many of their MV’s join together to tell and ongoing story. I loved your reaction to the boys. I hope you look further into them. If you are into the more hip hop/rap, there are songs they have that are just from the “rap line”. Check out the Cypher series. They are basically diss tracks like Mic Drop and to an extent Idol.
