"You Shook Me" was first recorded by Muddy Waters in 1962. Willie Dixon wrote the lyrics and Earl Hooker the music. Led Zeppelin slowed it down and souped it up with the heavy psychedelic over-driven guitar, the church organ passages, and Robert Plant's killer blues harmonica. Fire!

What a great reaction - again - Led Zeppelin's first album - John Bonham the drummer is only 20 yrs old - Robert Plant the singer and harmonica player is also 20 yrs old. Led Zeppelin is simply incredible. The right to left and back again "panning" of the sound is part of record production back then. I'm not sure how much it's done nowadays, but it was done that way since the late 1960s, bc that's when stereo records began being produced. Led Zeppelin's first album was one of the first stereo albums to be released (as opposed to mono).

"You Shook Me" is a 1962 blues song recorded by Chicago blues artist Muddy Waters. Willie Dixon wrote the lyrics and Earl Hooker provided the instrumental backing; the song features Waters' vocal in unison with Hooker's slide-guitar melody. "You Shook Me" became one of Muddy Waters' most successful early-1960s singles and has been interpreted by several blues and rock artists. (Wikipedia)

My fav Zepp lp is the first, and YouShookMe is just one great example of why, Blessing! Furthermore, for an album put together in mere wks, the production quality is excellent, with many songs such as this leading beautifully into the one that follows, so I hope someday you'll have the time to listen to the whole thing...

Heh, just finished the reaction I love your characterization of him as a bird at the end and also yeah it was kind of close to yodeling wasn't it? And this is not the only song where he vocally plays off with calling answer with Jimmy Page on the guitar. Also though, if you really want to dig into this band, one thing that is not characteristic so much is that Jimmy Page and John Bonham on the drums would coordinate so intensely. And it's not like John Paul Jones doesn't do that you know if his keyboard and bass playing with the drummer like a traditional Rock Rhythm Section of course, everybody in that band was insanely genius-level talented but without a lot of formal training or anything, although they had been exposed to Jazz and some other things more than you might guess. But anyway it wasn't all that, for the guitar player in the drummer to be that closely in sync. But if you start to listen to it and other Led Zeppelin that you're here, you will notice it in certain songs. If you want to hear him use a lower register to some degree quite successfully. And a song that's heavily piano-driven with John Paul Jones doing that, it will make you want to dance and you will not be able to sit in your chair, it's from their last album before John Bonham died and effectively ended everything. The album name is in through the out door, and there are so many great songs on that, but the one I'm thinking of is called Southbound Suarez. The whole arrangement in performance of this sweet little not very long song is incredible. But I almost feel like Robert Plant is channeling and early Elvis here a little bit, and it's just so fun: m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/fqLKdpKVfZh9d68

m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/eGXSg6yuhKp3gMk Just had to throw this in your direction before I forgot; I was listening to you appreciating organ in this, and it's funny that your first reaction was country when mine was, wow it's taking me to church. But either way, Deep Purple, a British band from the late 1960s through the 1970s, was incredible. A very significant band in the scene and Smoke on the Water is probably their biggest hit, but that is off this landmark album from the early 70s called Machine Head. That whole album is fire by the way. But anyway, they have an organist Jon Lord who plays a B3 Hammond with the Leslie speakers through a Marshall stack and everybody in that bad is phenomenal. The lead singer Ian Guillen (sp?) had this crazy vocal range and he actually did the lead vocal for Jesus in the Broadway recording for Jesus Christ Superstar. Lazy is a fun song from Machine Head that really does feature of the Oregon quite a bit but also he often played along with Ritchie Blackmore on guitar and even the bass guitar got into the innocent riffs sometimes. But anyway it's killer. It's totally killer. And it's also from back in the day and it's pretty hard and pretty soulful rock, and I have a feeling you would love it. Most of the time I really feel like people should hear the studio cut first because that is what made it a huge hit on the radio and what we heard on the record album as well as on the radio all the time, and it's always going to be the best representation of it. But just like Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple was one of those bands that was just so good lie they were almost better than in the studio. And while the Recording Technology of the time meant that it's not quite of the quality of the studio album, I know how you are and even during this reaction you are saying that you really need to see Led Zeppelin do the song live, so that link I sent you is to a live performance from 1972. And there is another bit of Life footage that's like 11 minutes long, but this one absolutely kills and it shorter so I thought that would be better for you to react to, should you decide to go in that direction. Once again, I just know you would love it.

Yet another not totally appropriate recommendation! If you want a singer with a very distinctive voice, you really should listen to Kent Dykes, "Omar" of Omar and the Howlers. This Texas blues-rock band from the 1980s and '90s was incredible! Unfortunately Kent came down with a virulent skin disease which forced him to give up performing, in 2018, I think. Anyway, here ae a number of their songs, all of them VERY worth reacting to: Hard Times in the Land of Plenty kzbin.info/www/bejne/kHPGmqSAgtiWfbM Rattlesnake Shake kzbin.info/www/bejne/maPPlqqljJ2Zqac Born on the Bayou kzbin.info/www/bejne/sGGmi4Z3fdiqgJI (yes, the CCR song. But this blows CCR away!) Honest I Do kzbin.info/www/bejne/aZytanumnL9qeJI (with Gary Clark, Jr.) Low Down Dirty Blues kzbin.info/www/bejne/jXy7dIyjq6doick Mississippi Hoodoo Man & Dont You Know kzbin.info/www/bejne/sJO4iJ1jeKucY7M Since I Met You Baby kzbin.info/www/bejne/omPCZKuKart4h7c Life Without You kzbin.info/www/bejne/kKCpd2eLeJtgfck King Bee kzbin.info/www/bejne/r3fdqHuCgZ2np7s Big Boss Man kzbin.info/www/bejne/d2TWnZ6Em56UlcU (with Jimmy Vaughn, Stevie Ray Vaughn's older brother) Yes, I couldn't get enough of Omar and the Howlers.
