I am so glad that Led Zeppelin took this Willie Dixon song, which was already great as sung by Willie, and let it loose in 1969 , having been given the Led Zep treatment.

When folks say that bands like Zeppelin copied these old blues greats, they didn't so much as copy but they reinvented them, it was not like all the sampling that goes on now!
@breakingbells
@breakingbells 6 ай бұрын
I'm not sure people have a problem with copying/reinventing or reimagining original blues songs or any type of music. But at least give credit where credit is due to the original writers and performers, which Led Zeppelin failed to do.
@kenhewitt7357

Everyone was doing it back then and no one went out of their way to give credit except for saying who their influences were in interviews.
@breakingbells

@@kenhewitt7357 Everyone WAS doing it, the difference being that most bands (Beatles & The Stones especially) credited the original writers on their label and even brought Howlin Wolf on tour with them. Led Zeppelin were cheeky and never did, hence the numerous court cases brought against them in later years.

I laugh at the haters who say Led just ‘stole’ old black blues and didn’t pay their dues. This may be a song Muddy Waters played too, but this is its own animal with its own vibe and damn, what a performance by all members of the band. At a certain point, it’s not a theft of a song, it’s a tribute to the one before while elevating it to a different level, exposing it to a different audience. I don’t know business wise if they would have owed The original player any royalties and failed to pay them, that’s a different issue. But on the music alone this is just a different song when they play it.
@Cosmo-Kramer
@Cosmo-Kramer 2 жыл бұрын
You're missing the whole point. The greatness of a cover is irrelevant. If it's a cover, like this was, you have to give credit to the original artist, and pay them. Zep didn't do that on several songs early in their career, and that's called theft, plain and simple. In fairness to Zeppelin, a lot of rock bands also failed to give credit to old blues artists during that era. But that doesn't make it right.

March 29, 1970, Hoffheinz Pavillion, Houston, TX, 3rd row center. I spent every penny I had and all I could borrow for those tickets. It was worth every cent. A major deposit in the memory bank. Joints being passed up and down the rows, beautiful chicks sitting on guys shoulders, the feeling of harmony and joy was palpable. The drummer, John Bonham, threw his sticks to the crowd and performed a 5 minute drum solo with his knuckles. You've seen Stevie Ray Vaughn play guitar behind his back? Same feeling. Led Zeppelin was absolutely amazing throughout. Seriously talented and surprisingly dedicated musicians. Despite their brief run (only 10 years), they are the 5th largest selling musical act in history - for a reason!

All the songs on that album (Led Zeppelin I) are incredible and have a live feel to them. You could do worse than reacting to all of them... :-) Speaking of which, I'm so glad that you didn't react to an actual live version of the song -- almost everything by LZ sounds better in the studio/album version. But, I agree that seeing them live (to supplement the album/studio versions) is fun just for the heck of it :-)

This is one of those obscure but great songs from this band. Their affinity for the blues is one of the main qualities the band that draws me. They to me, are the best band. It’s really hard to determine your “best band”. Especially growing up in the 70’s. But there are other bands that came out much later on my short list of great bands. I don’t stop listening to music no matter how old I get.
