I'm going to preface this and say that I'm not at all taking anything away from Neil when I say this, as I'm a huge NP/Rush fan....but as a drummer, crossovers really aren't hard to do. They look great...they're flashy...it's a real easy way to impress everyone, but they're not at all hard to play. I was 14 years old and saw Neil do them in concert on the Hold Your Fire tour...I was doing them the proficiently the next day after practicing them for about an hour. Getting them up to speed took a few days.

Mr. Neil Peart is a national treasure of his country of origin, Canada, just like so many of our other performers. His drum solos stand out just like his band's music, Rush, on the world stage. Neil Ellwood Peart OC. You may ask what the OC means and that is understandable. OC means Neil received the Order of Canada medal. An OC is the highest honour of merit a Canadian can receive. Neil unfortunately left us early in life in 2020 I believe but his skills, his music, and his life lives on for us in so many ways.

Imagine being a teenager, going to your very first Rush concert. Now imagine sitting just behind and to the right of the stage. My friends and I had almost this exact view of Neil and his spectacular drum set. Never saw anything like it. He was absolutely mesmerizing throughout. Now imagine watching a drum solo not very different than this video but with two roadies spinning him and the drum set around merry-go-round style. Unbelievably genius. Neil flipping sticks in the air, catching them, keeping the beat, blasting toms and symbols, bass drums pounding, all in a blur of strobe lights while spinning. Neil Peart is absolutely The GOAT. Rush was the best sounding, best all-around 3-man orchestra I’ve ever seen. And they sounded exactly the same each of the 3 other tours I got to see. RIP Professor 🙏🏻

Neil Peart was probably the best progressive rock drummer of all time I’ve been drumming for 47 years and he was my idol and I was so fortunate enough to study under Joe Morello so if you think meals bad check out Joe Morello, the impossible drum solo or Buddy Rich Westside Story drum solo Neil idolize these guys if you notice in the end of the video he was playing along. Buddy Rich was in the background. If you really want to get your mind blown check out Joe Morello, Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa. And Louie Belsen, the first double bass drummer. Without those guys you wouldn’t have any other drummers today and Neil realize that that’s why you’ll see him playing traditional grip something he worked very hard at later in his life in his career. best of luck. Hope you choose one of these guys for your next video.

Even into his later years, he was still taking lessons from other drummers. He was a sponge of knowledge and always wanted to get “better.” Although he was mostly noted for progressive rock, he was also a huge fan of jazz and swing music (hence the ending of that solo.) Those feet you saw were in ballet shoes. He wore them to get a better “feel” for all the pedals and triggers in his kit. I was only fortunate enough to see Rush live 6 times but every time was unbelievable- and usually after his solos, I felt a little dizzy and had to sit down…

FYI. Neil started this drum solo from ending of the Mystic Rythms, which that song required his back drum kit, that his his electrict drum kit, his percussion board is on his right, then he hits a certain percussion tab to turn the drum kit back to the acaustic side of the kit which is considered his front kit, that he plays a majority of his drums for about 95% of his songs.!!! Any time you see Neil play the drums with the percussion on the left side he is at his front drum kit.!!

I bet his mother was a Swiss clockwork and his father was an Octopus. To me RUSH are THE band. Three normal guys taking Rock to higher levels. Neil Peart turned the drums into a speaking instrument, not just a rhythmic tool. Considering that Neil Peart had a flu back then he still did a great performance. His death in 2020 was a real loss.
