@@stevensapyak7971 That rather oversimplifies things. By 1970 Jim Crow may have received a mortal wound, but it was very much over the objection (sometimes violent) of the Southern Man. It was the federal government that ended Jim Crow. After this song came out Alabama voted in George Wallace of segregation now, segregation forever fame. He would later renounce those views. (And there is some reason to believe he only adopted them in the first place because it was the only way to win elections in the South at the time). But this was a period when the South was very much embracing the Confederacy, the good old days when black people were property and not equal. I don't know if Young was responding to some specific incident (as he did with Ohio). But it could well be the displays of confederate flags that flew when he played in the South. That is a flag that always became more popular in the South when the country as a whole forced civil rights on the South.

The civil Rights act was passed in 1964. This is from "after The Gold Rush" 1970. Neil was calling out the southern man, because so little had changed. If you look at Neil's Catalog, you might find that Neil produces what might be considered "A State Of The Union" review, for lack of a better description of the previous decade. Try "Rockin' In The Free World" 1990. Neil can be very passionate, but at the same time he's also written some beautiful ballads.

Hey Hartlor, you know how much I love Neil, but I am not a fan at all of this live performance. The audio isn't great, not his best guitar playing, and very far from his best vocal performance. I know Britt likes to do live performances, and there are much better ones out there. But surprisingly not as many good live ones as you find with some of his other songs. For this one I would have gone with the studio. Britt probably needs a reset with the 1971 BBC Live Old Man so she can see that he actually has a good voice. Of course some just don't like his high tenor tone.

I’m sorry girl, but you gotta let it play sometimes. There are big reactors who do not pause every 30 seconds, let alone every 10. The videos aren’t blurry either. You’re overly cautious, and the problem with that is that some things are not meant to be experienced in sound bytes. If you’re gonna give a real reaction to the art, you need to experience it as closely as you can to how it is intended to be.

Neil's calling out the general view of the stereotypical Southern man of that era and speaking out against the injustices that went on. Verse 2 from the opposite perspective. This is a classic song from a legendary Canadian artist. As far as his voice goes, he adopted that vocal style during a show early in his career out of bordeom and it stuck because it was so unique. Nice reaction! Gotta try Heart Of Gold, Needle and the Damage Done, Keep On Rockin' In the Free World, to start. He's got a deep rabbit hole of fantastic music.

This is a protest song by all means. Neil Young is from the generation that wrote all kinds of protest songs about the Vietnam war. The “Lilly belle” part I believe is from Neil’s perspective saying Noel say the black man while Noel was coming ‘round and that he was going to cut him down meaning stopping a lynching. Not in the more modern way meaning he was going to cut him down for coming around.

This song was a protest anthem against slavery in the Confederate states. Neil young offended a lot of southerners with this song, yet with it he produced in me and many like me a lifelong rock-star friend. Yes, the Lilly Belle verse is sung in the slave-master's persona, not as an endorsement, but rather as an accurate depiction. Young also produced some musical enmity, the most pointed being Lynyrd Skynyrd's reply song, "Sweet Home Alabama", with its lines, "I hope Neil Young will remember // Southern man don't need him 'round anyhow." (For the record, since hearing that line, my feeling toward Skynyrd has been that I wouldn't piss in their mouths if their guts were on fire.) And one more thing, Britt : Young doesn't sing about ". . . what THE Good Book says;" rather, he sings about ". . . what YOUR Good Book says" -- that is, he's singing TO the Southern Man, not ABOUT his own personal beliefs. I've no idea whether he ever professed or now professes Christianity himself, but it's irrelevant to this song, which is about the obvious, blatant, glaring, screaming hypocrisy of White Christian slavery in the first place, no matter how many KKK crosses are burnt in how many lawns. A little critical listening would go a long way in helping you to understand and interpret this sort of song. "THE" and "YOUR" simply aren't the same word. Cheers.

He is notoriously against the injustice of the South. This song stirred up a small back and forth with Lynyrd Skynyrd, with them referencing this song in Sweet Home Alabama. Although many people think they were "fighting", both artists were pointing out the disjunction of the South and how it definitely divides.. When Hurricane Katrina happened, I know for myself it was a harsh lesson as a northerner how terrible the South is still doing for all the people. Neil Young went on the benefit program for the disaster, and sang a very, very angry version of Walking To New Orleans. Lots of artists on the show were the best of the best, and some were very uplifting and trying to spread hope. I found the Young performance very cathartic. The anger should burn in hearts to correct the sins of the past and for sure, the present. But we do still need to listen to peace and hope. Fix what's wrong, reward what's right. If you want to hear another surprising song in the same vein, try Golden Country by REO Speedwagon. Not sure if you've done that one.

One of the greatest protest songs of all time, calling out racism and slavery from back in the day, but a poignant reminder applicable today with dangers of forgetting the great strides made to stamp it out. Of course it can and has been taken out of context as such a "Southern Man" generalisation will do. As some have mentioned on here, the whole 2nd verse of Lynyrd Skynyrd's Sweet Home Alabama calls out Neil Young in person. I understand the band long since buried the hatchet, at least I hope they did!

The song is critical of the South. Lynyrd Skynyrd's song Sweet Home Alabama calls out Neil Young and says "a southern man don't need him around anyhow".

Britt, you will be well rewarded if you go down the Neil Young rabbithole. He is a very talented singer/songwriter capable of great vision and intensity. The most fascinating thing about Neil is that he can perform both gentle, exquisitely played acoustic tunes, and ear-splitting hard rock...and he excels at both!

Neil Young was a young man during the start of the Civil Rights Movement. He's Canadian, but still angry about slavery and Jim Crow culture. Interestingly, Lynyrd Skynyrd's song Sweet Home Alabama contains a reaction to this song in the line, "Well, I hope Neil Young will remember; a Southern man don't need him around, anyhow." That's why I'm a Neil Young fan and not so much a Lynyrd Skynyrd fan.

Here was Lynyrd Skynyrd's response Big wheels keep on turnin' Carry me home to see my kin Singin' songs about the Southland I miss Alabamy once again, and I think it's a sin, I said Well, I heard Mr. Young sing about her Well, I heard ol' Neil put her down Well, I hope Neil Young will remember A Southern man don't need him around, anyhow Sweet home, Alabama Where the skies are so blue Sweet home, Alabama Lord, I'm comin' home to you

Neil Young's Ohio is probably the greatest protest song in rock (recorded as Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, but it is Young's song) made all the more impressive because it was put out within a month of the Kent State killings, which it responds to. I don't know if Southern Man was a response to a specific incident, this was only six years after the murder of three civil rights workers in Mississippi for trying to register black people to vote, and only three years after interracial marriage was forced on the South by the Supreme Court. But it could simply have been a reaction to the embrace of the Confederate flag as a response to having Civil Rights forced on it by the North. The Civil War is an oddity in that because the North lost interest in the welfare of black people after the war, the South was given a chance to rewrite the history. Usually history is written by the winners, but in the US we actually had a cultural development in which Hollywood chose to focus on the poor mistreated slaveowner who had their way of life snatched away from them and could no longer own other people (As with Gone With The Wind). Even last month we had a former Southern Governor claim that the South was fighting for freedom in the Civil War (leaving out that it was the freedom to own black people, which is the opposite of freedom for black people). So it wouldn't surprise me if the sight of confederate flags to a Canadian coming from outside of the US was enough to inspire this song.

Warfield show 1993 but the song is written by Neil Young in 1970 and the crosses are burning fast refer to the Ku Klux klan. Lily Belle is a white girl who is with a black man, unfortunately at the time this represented an offense to the so-called "white race" in the South. It was no coincidence that he chose this image, it refers to the tragic story of the poor boy Emmett Till. His was a provocation towards racists, in fact the thing that most made racists' blood boil was not so much the white man who went with a black girl but the opposite.Another song written about the subject by Neil Young is Alabama from the album Harvest. Song written the following year in 1971 which aroused the reaction of Lynyrd Skynyrd who in turn responded with Sweet Home Alabama

Here is a great live performance by Merry Clayton, she recorded her version the year after Neil released his original in 1970. She had worked on some of Neil's earlier songs as backup singer and of course she is the best part of the Stone's Gimme Shelter...she didn't sing backup on Neil's original but she did her own great spin on it kzbin.info/www/bejne/mGq8dJZnfNaojZY

The studio version is much cleaner. Neil really doesn't have a bad voice. Neil Young has always been conscious of mankinds inhumanity to each other, political outcry, etc. He has a very good tune with Crosby, Stills and Nash about the murder of college students by the National Guard while peacefully protesting the war, called 'Ohio'. Worth checking out.
