Swaying with you from 🇨🇦 Neil Young is one of our treasures.

Harvest moon is an older term for a bright full moon during the harvest season. It allowed farmers to work into the evening harvesting crops before we had monster tractors with light bars. I don't know where you're located, but the season is coming when the days get shorter. Take notice of a full moon in fall when the sun goes down and that big bright full moon lights the night sky, then you'll understand the tempo and sound of this song.

Yeah, it is the full moon that is nearest to the autumn equinox, It is usually in September I believe

Harvest moon is the last full moon of the summer. When the moon is bright too work late by moon light. We call it Halloween now. And I can play the 🎸 and harmonica at the same time. I was playing this song at 12 to my grandma on the front porch while she shucked 🌽 she loved it... 😢 Miss you granny

He used the harvest moon as a symbol of getting older, I think. The harvest is when you reap all the hard work and fruits of your labor, but it also takes place right before winter begins. He has loved this woman for many years; they're older now but still in love, and he wants to see her dancing one more time again, under a big bright moon.

Britt, where I grew up on the Saskatchewan prairies a Harvest Moon was a full moon that was very yellowish, on the verge of orange which came during harvest time in the fall. Neil Young lived in Winnipeg for a number of years and has become very much attached to the Canadian prairies. So he composes and sings these sorts of country type songs and albums from time to time. People love his country albums like 1972's "Harvest," 1978's "Comes A Time" and 1992's "Harvest Moon." 💖😏😎🎸

And the timing of the meaning of this is quite interesting because we just had a rare Moon last week which represents the Moon being closest to us than it has been in a long time or will be, which just means that it appears slightly bigger than it normally would be, even disregarding all of the visual effects that go with interpreting the size of the Moon. And so that means it's also brighter and it was the second full moon in a single month so it had extra importance. When Neil Young sings this kind of song, it's easy to imagine him thinking about all of that. Check out down by the river if you haven't Down By The River, it's really intense also and it's kind of early but it's a fan favorite and it was on the radio a lot.

Not only does he play guitar and harmonica, he also plays harmonica while playing piano. Be forewarned though, not all of his music is soft and dreamy. Because, as he states, "When I get big I'm gonna get an electric guitar, when I get really big". Well he does and plays some of the filthiest, swampiest beautiful music I've ever heard. Even then his songwriting is excellent. Powderfinger and Like a Hurricane are a couple of favorites.

As usual great reaction. A couple weeks ago you reacted to The Ducks "Gypsy Wedding", Neil was in that group. Neil is a great artist. With a catalog of roughly 45 studio albums 13 live albums. Plus, you could throw in somewhere between 6-18 albums with other groups such as The Mynah Birds (Rick James group), The Buffalo Springfield, the super group Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, the Stills-Young Band. If you're in a mood and want to stay there, he's got a song to keep you there. If you want to get out of a mood, he's got one to get you there. His music covers the styles of Motown, Rock, Folk, Country Rock, Country, Experimental Rock, Heavier Rock and Blues. If you ask me what my favorite song is, I'd have to tell you it depends on the day. I've been listening to these two songs a lot lately, Speakin' Out... best sound quality is off the Neil Young channel on KZbin. The other is " Cinnamon Girl" live 1991. Thanks again for another great reaction.

Also, I think Neil is using the harvest moon (which others have explained below) as a beautiful poetic metaphor for the stage of mature love after many years together - the harvest/ autumn years that follow the anticipatory excitement of spring and the full bloom of summer of a relationship. Time to reap what's been sown.

As a former farmer from Western Canada, I used to be very nervous around the time of the harvest moon. It would likely be the first killing frost of the fall season. If it came too early in the season, the crops could be quite damaged.

Your story about a childhood crushes hilarious and yeah, you nail it. I didn't really have a girlfriend until around ninth-grade but around about 6th grade I really started having a crush on this girl and we moved away before I could really actually let her know for sure but we did have a lot of fun times together. I have always seen this song as celebrating the good feeling that humans can have together on all levels. He is just so authentic in the way that he communicates his stuff.
