A tough album to pick singles from to listen too. It really is better to experience it all in one sitting. Roger Water's semi-autobiographical depiction of a rock star who is the product of over-bearing mother and authority figures (teachers) and builds an emotional "wall" to protect him from emotions and the associated pain. In the end he is forced to tear down the wall and expose himself. The poem was actually lyrics from their song "Money" from the Dark Side of the Moon album.

@@johnnyjohnny-cg7np 100% agree. The way we heard it on the radio and when we bought the album was what made it so important at the time and buy only going for the live version, oftentimes perform two years and years after the fact and not even the same band members sometimes, you just totally missed the whole vibe in the culture of the time and why they became so big to start with. Or why a particular song is so beloved to start with. And plus the Fidelity is almost always way better and you can hear exactly what the band intended you to hear and why it became a hit. And then if you love it that much, then go back and watch a live version to get that visual input.

That was Bob Geldof at the end. This is from a movie "The Wall" and also a double album of the same name. Bob Geldof played the title role in the movie. Bob was also the lead singer for a band called The Boomtown Rats and co-founded Band-Aid which you probably have heard of and if you haven't, I wouldn't mind seeing you react to Queen's performance at Live-Aid. Pretty much considered to be the best live rock performance of all time.

Hey Britt, this track came out whilst I was at school and the teachers at the time hated it. I remember going on a geography field trip and the whole bus singing it throughout most of the journey. Great work as usual, give Pink Floyds 'money' a listen to. This was the poem the teacher in this clip was referring to.

Pink Floyd is one of the greatest bands to ever grace us with their genius. Their music still holds up as social commentary (since socially and politically nothing has changed in 50 years, not for the better anyway) and they are very talented poets and musicians. This is a deep catalog to dig into. Others have suggested some good ones but Comfortably Numb - Pulse Live, High Hopes - Pulse Live, and Time are all great places to start. But keep in mind, Pink Floyd wrote albums, not songs (once Syd was gone anyway - which is the version of the band most people are familiar with). Their albums were meant to be listened to as a complete story. Hard to do on here as a reaction, I know, but worth it on your own for sure.

It's important to know that these are original scenes from the movie which was made by Alan Parker in 1982 and it contains much autobiographical material of Roger Water's life, the bassist of Pink Floyd: The loss of his father in the second world war, his overbearing mother, the suffering in the authoritarian school system in England after World War II etc. The photo at the end of the clip shows Bob Geldof who's also a rock musician and played the main role in the movie. I think you have to watch this movie for understanding the full implications of this amazing Pink Floyd album. As far as I know the complete movie can be watched for free on KZbin.

The poem the teacher is bashing are the lyrics to Pink Floyd's "Money", another one of their songs that is a must. They wanted to show how strict and stern the education system could be and how it also tended to teach conformity while sniffling out individuality. Like several of their songs, there is an element of social awareness.

They are one of the GOATs in Rock Music genre, and the absolute greatest Progressive Rock band ever. They have sold out 90,000+ seat concert venues, all over the world, for over 4 decades, they have sold over 300 million albums worldwide. Their elaborate live shows were, and are, unmatched. If you're considering Pink Floyd requests, "Comfortably Numb" from their 1979 The "Wall" album.

This song is from an album that very literally saved my life. I was alone, abused, ridiculed by my school-mates. My grandmother, who was the only member of my family that made me feel like I mattered had passed away when I was 13, and then "The Wall" came out when I was 14 years old... It tells a story of how pressures and pain dive the character "Pink" into insanity, it told me how the wall I was building around me to feel safe would ultimately destroy me... It changed my life. You need to listen to the album from start to finish: you have a keen mind, you will understand the messaging. The movie is incredible as well, it will give you a different perspective to improve your understanding. It would be absolutely AWESOME to see a song by song reaction to the album, maybe over a years time....?

Thanks for the reaction--this song was a critic against the british education system in the 1940's. The poem that the teacher reads to humiliate the kid at the start, is in fact the lyrics of the song Money, also by Pink Floyd, which became their best selling hit--and the teacher laughs about it--irony. And you're right--the teacher at home is being bossed by his wife, so he takes revenge on the kids at school. About the masks, it means that the school system in these days encourages conformity--a manufacture to suppress kid's individuality and make them all the same. They made the movie the wall back in 1982--worth watching as a whole. The pic that you see at the end is the main actor in the movie. For the band himself, try to search for live performances. They disbanded in the mid 1980's, but the survivors still collaborate with other artists, once in a while--Roger Waters is still active at almost 80 y.old.Have a nice day.

You also have to understand that this song was written in the 1970's and about teachers during that time period and before. There were many teachers who used their authority to rule over children. There was always that one teacher that seamed to enjoy punishing students and back in the 60's and 70's, physical reprimanding/corporal punishment was common.

Pink Floyd was the name of the band not a person or people. This was one of the greatest albums of the era - at this time, many albums (and most of the best) were treated very much as a single work of art, where every song leads into the next and tells a story. Much of Pink Floyd’s music fits this pattern, but this one the most. The Wall is effectively a giant Rock and roll “musical,” and many of the songs - including this one- flow into the next without a pause between, and many of the songs are very hard to understand outside of that greater album’s context. It’s like picking up a great book and just reading one chapter att random.

Pink Floyd's album "The Wall" is not just an album. It's a story. If you really want to understand this song. Listen to the album from beginning to end. It will make much more sense. You may even consider expanding your exposure by looking at Dark Side of the Moon.

The Guy in The picture was Bob Geldof who organized LIVE AUD which raised £30 Million for Africa and from that The USA also organized an event the same day and raised millions. He has never been with Pink Floyd which was formed in 1964 so I do not know why he is pictured. lol

The "video" is from the movie they made of the album (in 1983) 4 years after its release in 1979. Something like 90% of this album was written by Pink Floyd bassist and lead singer, Roger Waters. It's a semi biographical semi fictional mashup of Roger's childhood and the former lead singer, Sid Barrett's decent into madness, all wrapped together into the fictional character of "Pink Floyd". The stuff from the movie depicting Pink as a child is from Roger's life. The stuff with Pink as an adult are meant to represent Sid. The man PLAYING Pink in the movie is singer/producer Bob Geldof from the band the Boomtown Rats. That's who you see in the photo at the end. It's a really trippy movie (and album), but it worth a look/listen if you REALLY want to understand the story that Roger was telling.

Great reaction Britt! Should definitely listen to the album version of all the music first to get all the nuances in their production. This version was re-recorded for the movie and the guitar solo was buried I the mix for some crazy reason. The Wall specifically is best listened to the album first, then the movie, then the live concert called "Is There Anybody Out There?". Looking forward to more!

The Wall is also a movie from Pink Floyd that Follows the Album which stars Bob Geldof. Sort of a dive into post ww2 Britain and also a dive into psychedelia. Much of Pink Floyd's music revolves around band make Sid Barrett who was diagnosed with schizophrenia and was eventually institutionalized. The remaining band members were no doubt devastated but also curious as to what was going on in the mind of Sid as far as what was or wasn't reality. Pink Floyd is known for concept albums that really should be listened to all the way thru as they have a beginning, middle, and end as well as a theme. Some great music!

Pink Floyd has THE best audio of any concert I have ever been too. They use Quadraphonic sound. The PA system is in the front, the upper sides and the back. I saw them in ASU stadium. We were on the floor waiting for the show to start and at one point they played the sound of a helicopter and it sound like it flew all around us then buzzed our heads, it was crazy.

As stated before this is from a concept album with a complete story As part two this is when he builds the final parts of the wall in his mind from memories of his childhood as he slowly goes insane on a rock and roll tour this causes his metal breakdown and collapse at this point of the story

You actually had two Pink Floyd songs here (three if you count the poem that cruel teacher read out loud) - Best days of our lives - Another brick in the wall part 2.

The poem the teacher reads out loud are lyrics from Money, a Pink Floyd song. The picture at the end is of Bob Geldof of the Boomtown Rats and the force behind the Live Aid benefit concerts. Geldof plays the lead in the movie The Wall.

The song is a protest against the institutionalizing of the modern education system and indoctrination of the youth. The kids walking into the meat grinder is symbolizing kids being molded into mindless, faceless, working machines, and being that way til they die. Powerful message and imagery. Also fun fact: the "poem" he was writing in class was actual lyrics from their song "Money".

This song is from the album and movie, Pink Floyd the Wall. This is a segment from the movie. To understand it fully, you must watch from the beginning. Pink Floyd does not appear once in the whole movie, opting to hire Bob Geldof to play a fictional character called Pink.

It's interesting you say that about this song because this song came out when I was in the 3rd grade, and the teaching establishment of the time tried to have this song band.
