Prince Super Bowl half time show is an absolute master piece. That is the best halftime show ever and it’s some of his best work. Towards the end it’s almost emotional. The backstory is amazing as well. Watch the whole thing. Don’t do part of it. It’s all or nothing. It builds. There’s never been another halftime show like it. When he was young his live shows were ridiculous. The dude could dance and he was all over the stage. His library of works could keep you busy for years. He’s changed a lot over the years. He’s always been cutting edge.

Coming from a straight male , it’s not hard to figure out . He is singing from a man’s perspective to a woman . He wants to be this woman’s everything. He wants to be first in her life above all others . His lyrics shows this by asking would you let me take care of you and do all the things that only a best friend can . It’s not uncommon because in a healthy relationship, you should be best friends actually . He talks about picking out clothes , before they go out , because that’s what being in loves about . He says several things that to some may seem odd but it’s not because when you truly love , you want to be in every part of that persons life that you can . Fun reaction! Cat Glover was dancer and background vocalist on Prince's Sign of the Times and LoveSexy tours. This was a video clip from the concert movie for Sign of the Times, which I highly recommend. He wears the white fur coat on and off through both tours. Amazing song and performance. As others have said, it is from a male perspective. He wants that closeness to his woman that she has with her female friends. Also he did have some classical dance training. Whilst he was at school he practiced classical dance with the Minnesota Dance Theatre. He played at benefit concert in 1983 for them when they were in financial difficulties. That’s the concert he debuted many of the tracks from Purple Rain. Also during the lead up to Purple Rain the movie, himself and the cast took dancing lessons. Having said that though, I think he was a natural dancer. He’s got the perfect dancers body. His movements are so fluid. Despite his height, his body was always muscular and toned. He was athletic. He played basketball like a pro! I love his dancing. The moves were all his own, not highly choreographed. He just moved the way the music made him feel 💜 Finally that black cut out jumpsuit and waist chains are sexy as hell!! Great reaction. This song is in my Prince top 5 for sure. You trying to figure out the perspective is one of the reasons why. Technically, he’s singing it from the male perspective to his girlfriend because he wishes he could have the relationship she has with her best girlfriend (the girlfriend was Susannah Melvoin and her best friend is her twin sister Wendy who played guitar in Prince’s band The Revolution). It’s really a song about being jealous camouflaged as a love song. But, I’ve always thought Prince wanted this song to be interpreted by the listener. On the album, it’s sung in his “Camille” voice (a sped up version of his voice which sounds much more feminine). Also, he was really into Kate Bush and loved the song “Running Up that Hill” and the lyrics about making a deal with God to get him to swap Kate’s place with her man. He was inspired by that song when writing this one. So, all those questions you had about what it all meant were right on. The back up singer is the amazing Cat Glover. She is a dancer and was on the Sign O’ the Times and Lovesexy tours with Prince. Now, about his pirouette. Prince was a great dancer but was in so much pain as he got older that he couldn’t really go all out anymore. I read a quote from Susannah Melvoin about him asking her to teach him how to do a pirouette when they were walking around one night. Clearly, she taught him very well. 💜💜💜

If I am not mistaken, Prince seemed to present his story(song) to his lady as if he was to do all of the things she does for him. This is from a concert movie named after his double album called "Sign O The Times" in 1987. Prince is a Gemini so male and female is who he is! You need to watch the whole movie it was great. You know he was competing with Michael Jackson who had released the album "Bad" i liked both albums. I loved both Michael and Prince. Prince is more musician than Michael. But they were Both Great. I was in High School when this came. You know they were both born in the midwest to domineering Musician Fathers! Michael was a child star that developed into a mega superstar! I just amired Prince a little more because of his musicianship and how he was with the women. But i cant understand what Michael went through being the bread winner in your family at such a young Age. It affect him a lot. They were both great artist that admired each other a lot! The concert movie was brilliant. I highly suggest you watch it. He is singing from his own perspective. In the song he is trying to get his girlfriend (or a girl) to be as open with him,, as she would be (or as he imagined she would be) with one of her girlfriends. Such a well written song. And as always,, Prince takes the song and his performance to the next level live. But the recording of “if I was your girlfriend” on The sign of the Times album,, is brilliant. I will never understand how someone could explore and experience a song,, by constantly stopping and talking in the middle of the song. Is that the new modern way of listening to music? While talking through the song as it plays?

He's asking as a man to a woman if it i was your bestie and not your man would you let me share the things u only would share with your bestie and do the things only best friends do as a way of wanting to get even closer to his girl and share everything

This is how I interpret this song. Prince is singing from a man's perspective of how he feels about a particular women. He wants to be everything to this woman. He's asking the woman how can I make that happen. Alot of people thinks he's gay he is not. He just has a good understanding of women.

TLC did this song as well. This is the film version, but if u listen to the album version, his voice is sped up. It goes into the era called Camille" which was going to be prince s alter ego. He did a "camille" album but record company said they didn't know how they d market. The girl in the video, cat glover, which coordinated the dance moves for prince and the band.
