Mariska Veres was born the middle of three daughters of an Hungarian violinist and orchestra leader Lajos Veres and her German-born mother of French-Russian parents, Maria Ender. Maybe you hear that in het singing style... She growd up in Holland The Haque which is situated on the other side of the North Sea (England is not far away). The Haqua hat a lot of Youth and was influenced too by immigrants from Indonesie (formal colony) who where playing lot of American new style rockmusic coming to Holland right after WW II. The Haqua was also THE pop centre of Holland, cause their was a lot of youth and the municipality stimulated them to play in bands (instead of making mischief)... Golden Earrings (Radar Love) came also from The Haque...

Just thought I’d inform you, in case nobody else has, that Mariska Veres was the singer and she didn’t even speak English. Hard to imagine isn’t it? She just memorized the words then sang them. Shocking Blue was a Dutch band and was led by Robbie Van Leeuen who played the lead guitar and wrote all the songs, including Venus. Check out some of their other tunes like Send me a Postcard, Long and Lonesome Road, Time Slips Away, Inkpot, Navajo Tears, Mighty Joe. They really had some good music.

Shocking Blue is one of the bands from my home town The Hague in the Netherlands that became world famous. another band that managed that feat is the Golden Earring, best known for songs like Radar Love, Twilight Zone and When the Lady Smiles. the video for that last song was banned from mtv so that never became a hit in the states. it might be fun to react to the video of one or all of these songs, they're iconic.

She's singing about the Goddess Venus. Venus in Roman or Aphrodite in Greek Mythology was one of the 12 Gods of Olympus. She was the goddess of love, beauty, and procreation. As such, she was the most beautiful amongst the gods and was almost always followed by Cupid (Eros)

The "two" mics were used for a couple of different reasons, especially back before the digital age. If recording live you can pan on left and one right to get a stereo effect. You could also add effects such as reverb on one feed and clear on the other.

The 2 mic's can be for two reasons. 1. One mic for the PA and one for recording 2. Used as a background noise cancelling feature For the #2 above the mics need to be spaced apart and be the same mic (because the spacing will result in the background noise being cancelled but not the singers voice) So this looks to be for reason number 1. Recording from one mic and the PA for the second mic. With better equipment now it's not necessary. I'm not a sound engineer and have gained this info through various articles over the years, and long ago engineering courses.. So if I'm wrong please any sound engineers please speak up

Shocking Blues was a one-hit wonder in the U.S., but they were a Dutch band and did well in Europe in the 60's/70's. "Venus" was an early pagan pop rock song, long before this particular sub-genre of rock took off and found it's own groove in the 1990's, with bands like Blackmore's Night and Omnia.
