A midfielder is like a point guard. He controls the flow and direction of the game. His job is to open up opportunities and create holes in the defense, then feed the strikers to score. The most important position in my opinion.

Gullit and Mattheus are both all time greats, and probably rank well above Gerrard. But I've never seen that dribbling ability from Mattheus, Gullit maybe.

@@epicurhyss4014 Matthaus could dribble his ass off, Mathaus I have over Gerrard for sure, but Guillit I think him and Gerrard are pretty equal overall, although I would say Guillit had smoother close control and was a better dribbler, I would say Gerrard was better at long shooting in open play. If you were saying Guillit was a little better, I would accept that, but Well above Gerrard? nah that I dont agree with, As for Gerrard I think you are doing him a bit of disservice, and possibly letting his lack of Prem titles colour your judgment. I take back the qualifier "well" in saying Gullit and Matthaus were above him. However both those players did win Ballon d'Ors and or FIFA Player of the year awards. I hadn't however realized that Gerrard did come in 3rd place for the Ballon d'Or once. I saw a comment that Lampard was better than him. I know almost nothing of Lampard except noting just minutes ago, that he was voted 2nd place for the Ballon d'Or the same year that Gerrard came in 3rd, not that these awards are the ultimate measure. I fully admit of being highly impressed by his highlights, he being so well rounded that I assumed him to be a box to box midfielder, though someone has said he was a CDM. For that position, in addition to Mattheus, names like Davits and Veira alson come to mind. And though I've not yet seen any footage, I used to always hear that di'Stefano was one the all-time great all-rounders.

The goal when he "just walked off" was the opening goal in an FA Cup match against Luton Town. Gerrard later explained that he knew the team wasn't playing well enough for that to be the winner so he didn't get excited by it. He was right - that game ended up 5 - 3 Liverpool with the final goal being scored by Xabi Alonso from inside his own half (their keeper went up field for a corner and couldn't get back in time to stop it; there's a great shot of Gerrard screaming at Xabi for taking the shot and immediately turning that into applause when it went in...)

Pirlo ? maybe, you have a case there, Carlos? um no not a chance, Scholes nope not at 70-80 yards, he did play better through balls though but usually form 30-40 yards, Beckham, same level, but Beckham was a better crosser (the best crosser I have ever seen) Better than Alonso? just no, none of them. NOTE: I am specifically referring to 70-80 yard passes, not 30-60 yard passes to me that is a mid range pass and Pirlo is the best mid range passer I have ever seen and possibly has the greatest passing range I have ever seen, but Alonso is the best long passer ever, no doubt in my mind. (if you class 40 yards and over as long range, then yeh I guess Pirlo is better, I dont class that as long range though) I respect all your opinions though even If I dont fully agree

Alonso would do 4-8 70/80 yard passes a game, and whilst Pirlo is a better player and more gifted and versatile with his passing range, his Long passes were far less frequent on that long range> So under these criteria: Best passer Long: Alonso Mid: Pirlo Short: Xavi Best range of passing at the highest level: Pirlo IF you said Pirlo is the best all round passer ever? THAT I would agree with

Gerrard was amazing not gonna lie a great leader and probably the best at the box to box position in the Premier league, Scholes was best at the attacking/playmaker position and has titles to prove it with probably the best first touch and variety of pass types Lampard as more the all out attacking midfielder and was epic at his prime but never really controlled/conducted the game like the other two.
