Beasties played a major role in creating the beat no matter if using SP1200, MPC or using instruments. They had coproducers but they were driving the ship. Even when it came to the label they were left alone.

Rick Rubin's involvement never went beyond their first record. Their second record was co-produced by the Dust Brothers. This third record, Check Your Head was produced by Beastie Boys along with Mario C. Aside from Mario C., the boys mostly produced the other records as a group. This was the first single from Check Your Head that I heard, and I was floored at how gnarly and loud and fantastic it is. So What'cha Want and Pass The Mic are my favorite tracks from that record.

@DeanCubed11 ай бұрын
yeah they didn't have to rely on it like some modern rappers, but of course they cursed all the time, and one of their songs is literally "Hey Fuck You". But their major radio hits came at a time when people were literally afraid of rap, you had to be clean on radio.

Thanks for the background on the video … WOLFEN is a movie a lot of us knew. I love how they reference common-culture elements from their childhood: the cop series in Sabotage, the Godzilla movies in Intergalactic, and the positive name drops of people who have influenced them (or whom they respect). Glad you enjoyed it. Looking forward to more of the BBs.

It's a radio edit, so they do curse on albums. However, after the early years they took a very strong stance against lyrics about misogyny and violence. I seen them live in Ireland in the 90's, they asked The Prodigy not to play Smack my B**ch Up. The Prodigy came on and played it first song and dissed The Beasties and then put on a high energy show. Then the Beastie Boys came on, said it's not cool to promote violence against women and blew them out of the water with an amazing set.

Check out "Jimmy James" from this album or "Professor Booty" fire tracks. Mario Caldato Jr, aka Mario C was the engineer on Paul's Boutique and the producer for Check Your Head, Ill Communication, and Hello Nasty, he was essential. Beastie Boys had a bad falling out with Rick Rubin and Def Jam, so they took their talents to Capitol Records and the rest is history.

Rick Rubin was only on board for the Beasties FIRST album. They left Def Jam and New York City after the first album. (Def Jam screwed them out of tons of money). Their second album and this album was produced by the dust brothers. This album is their 3rd album (1992) and in my opinion, this is their best. There are tons of curse words on Paul's boutique, but considering it's sales were lower, maybe they (the Beasties themselves) made a decision to make this album more commercial and MTV ready.

I missed the Girls reaction. I've been listening to Beastie Boys since the 80's and I get it, Girls was a pretty generic track. I never owned it on CD. Just cassette and vinyl. So I never skipped it but I would had it been convenient. You definitely hit the right reaction to wash that taste out your mouth with this one. This track is fire, from the production down to the delivery. You should check out the live version on the Arsenio Hall show. Cypress Hill joins them with a couple extra verses. It's pretty epic.
