To add a few more details: Claude François was so huge dozens of women were going nuts when he appeared. They were literally sleeping on his door step. Too bad we are only discovering today that sometimes he was liking a little bit too young. His shirts were buttoned between his legs so they didn’t slip out of his pants. He was a very hard worker and it was not always funny to work with him. Always taking care of all the details. Kind of a Disco Steve Jobs. He built a huge entertainment company based on himself. As it has been said: he was the first one to have black dancers with him. And that was huge. His song are basically known by any French today. He is timeless. For better or worse.

It's funny because of the 70's style. This is Disco as seen from France! Actually Claude François was importing the American musical style of the time to France. So yes, the hips movement is weird/funny by today's standards, but it's supposed to be the fashion of the time imported from the USA (recall we are in the mid 70's). You should react to "Cette année là" (1976) and of course "Magnolias Forever" (late 1977). The latter was a big hit in France. Completely true disco.

So funny to see someone reacts for the first time about this song. Claude François is Iconic in France because he was a big big big star. Of course how they're dressed and how they dance seems strange in 2021 but in 1978 it was absolutely modern. He had a talent to find the new things and bring it, he made a lot of songs picking some songs coming from everywhere in the world and made it famous in France by using french words. This song, with Magnolias for ever are very big for 2 reasons: it was french Disco and the fact he just died before the single was out (it was on the album but the single went out the day he was buried). I'm old enough to remember that afternoon on tv, when they announce his death (stupid death: he was so perfectionnist that he took a bath before going to record a tv show, and saw a lamp was not on the perfect place...he tried to move it...and died) He was a big star, everyone was crying (especially girls), thousands of people in front of his house. He was Iconic, perfectionnist, avant garde, modern, ...but after years we learn he had aloso bad relations with girls, angry, odious with everyone work with him bucause of complexes. But he had a big talent and some of his songs still standards. No party in France without this song for example, everybody knows the lyrics and the dance :)
@nco19703 жыл бұрын
Yes, 'Comme d'habitude' is his song that was afterwards adapted in English and became 'My way'. Funnily enough, he wrote it after he broke up with France Gall. He was a real idol with die-hard fans. During years, he had to hide the fact that he had 2 sons. When he died in 1978, rescuers had to save a few women who jumped into the river to follow him into death (this is my first memory of people wanting to die for a singer). Still nowadays they go every year into a pilgrimage to the mill he owned in the countryside. By the way, he was born in Egypt hence Alexandra, Alexandrie which is a tribute to his birthplace.

All the french singers were dressed like that in the 70ies in France . Before his death, Claude had a look lighter, the 80ies coming.... Alexandrie Alexandra is always danced everywhere in France, we like to dance like him, his movments were done for that. The girls behind him were here to attract the public of men and was an heritage of the american groups in the 60ies. Before his death, Claude wanted to go in US with another style. In the 80ies, passed 40 years old, he would have been more like a crooner. See his version of My Way . You will note his "french accent" because English loved that at that time. No singers made so many hits in a 16 years career in France... His death was a shock for the country. I was only 9 years old, it was a Saturday , the weather was beautiful. Finally, the electric standards changed after his disappearance and when we have wet hands and we want to touch an electric device, we think to him....

9:56 "Comme d'habitude" was first sang by Claude Francois in 1967. It was written by J.Revaux which also later wrote the music of "Les lacs du Connemara" (M.Sardou) that you already reacted to. The song is in pure french. Paul Anka had listen to it and ported it to English with the title "My way" in 1968 (the meaning of the song was changed too). Later (1969) F.Sinatra sang it and made a huge success out of it. Such a success that people think this song was his whereas everything originated from France a couple of years before.

I am happy and touched that you finally discover Claude François. Claude François has been my idol for over twenty years, I am one of his most important collectors. Claude François is one of the greatest singers that the French variety has known with Johnny Hallyday. Over 67 million records sold, 1,800 concerts during his sixteen-year career. A career ended abruptly on March 11, 1978 after a domestic accident. An electrocution in his bathtub. As another commentary specifies, "Magnolias for ever" is more accomplished and the arrangements even more worked out than those of "Alexandrie Alexandra". Claude François died with "Magnolias for ever" number one on the charts. With time it is "Alexandrie Alexandra" which has become cult, but "Magnolias for ever" is sincerely better. Claude François was a perfectionist and supervised all the recording sessions. He surrounded himself with the best French and world musicians, because it was even recorded in the studios of Tamla-Motown in 1971 when no white people had set foot there. He was looking for the best, he wanted the best. He was a huge hard worker and a businessman.

Good song but in the same genre I do prefer by far "Magnolias for ever". In the late sixties he was deeply influenced by the Tamla Motown and soul music tracks. So he did a lot of covers in French such as : "It's the same old song", " Stop in the name of love", "December 63 (Oh what a night) ", "I can see clearly now", " I'll be around", "I fought the law", "You can hurry love", "Bend me shape me", " Beggin'", and of course " (Reach out) I'll be there". There's a French TV live rendition of it where he's singing with Diana ROSS and the Supremes.

I'm born in 1980, all my childhood I have seen video clips on TV with Claude Francois and his dancers. Not that I'm a big fan now, but vivid memory of his songs. the character was not that friendly in private, very though and misogynist it seems. but without a doubt a great producer.

It was about time you react to this guy. He's one of the most beloved artist of all French culture. He died electrocuted in his bathroom at a so young age. The girls are his dancers called the "claudettes" named after him. React to more of his' you won't regret it. He's a classic in line with Dalida, Serge Gansbourg, Michel Berge, Polnareff and others... it's before Daniel Balavoine, Jean jaques goldman's time...

Haha Dereck yes he is cheesy ! He is a bit of our Elvis equivalent in France. We have tons of Claude Francois impersonator that plays at parties and wedding. He was huge in France , they even made a biopic about him a couple of years back. He passed away because he touched a light bulb with his hands wet. I am personally am not a fan and most French people laugh at how cheesy he is but he is very well known.

Exactly, a specialist biograph (Fabien Lecoeuvre) of Claude François told in a interview that Claude François was for France what Elvis Presley was for America.

@@lucemay9085 Well, he wasn't as fat as the king of Rock&Roll in the end. But we was famous, for sure. :)

My grandma listened to him a lot. He's cheesy but he indeniably has a great voice and at the time he was a super showman. Lots of his songs including this one have cult-status and are referenced in many movies (for example Asterix Mission Cleopatra)

"My Way" is adapted from a song of this guy. "Comme d'habitude"
@67Daidalos3 жыл бұрын
You know derek, you taught me smthg today ! I always thought that it was "My Way" the original song that was adaptated as "Comme d'Habitude", because it was very common, epecially in the 60's 70's (numerous songs of Johnny Hallyday and Claude François are french adaptations of US/English songs). But as you mentioned it, I went check, and indeed, Comme D'Habitude is the original, and My Way the adaptation.

The long version of this song have a very nice percusion break, but sadly no real clip around. You definitly have to react to "Mangnolia for ever", the best one from his disco area, and "Comme d'habitude" the original version of my way and something totally different.
